I know content is key.

But what are some strategies you use to jump start your blog traffic?

What do you do to keep the traffic steady on your blog ?

I'd like to hear some ideas of what others are doing.

There are a varity of plug ins you should use to make sure the search engines can find you.
all-in-one-seo is a good one. get the sitemap plug in and submit your sitemap to google.
You also need to make sure your blog is set to automatically ping when you post. There is a plug in for that to. Make sure you have the url to ping google.

Offer appetizers and drinks. Just kidding. I graduated from LAC Pastry Arts 2005. Are you savory or sweet?

Okay, I send my friends e-mails about every two weeks. Just in case they got busy or didn't bookmark the pages. I give them a tidbit of information to get them interested. Hey, sometimes I can't get the sisters to go visit. They have their own agenda and time for doing whatever. I try not to be overbearing so when friends or family members hear from me it isn't too often.

I also make friends and join neighborhoods. I visit and review other bloggers and welcome them to visit mine.

I am thinking about taking out an ad in the Sunday newspaper; in the Book Review section. Also thinking about printing up business cards.

So, please do come by for a cozy read. Nice to have met you.

Business cards are great! Though you can reach more people online than you can by giving business cards and hoping they will visit (my opinion). I try to write new posts every single day, and have the "subscribe to comments" plugin installed, so it helps making people want to come back. Commenting on other blogs is also something i find really important, and if you can add value to the post and start a discussion, the blog owner will notice and most likely visit your blog. (hint hint: I do). Reviewing other blogs or holding a contest is also cool. Linking to other blogs in your posts (the power of trackbacks and pingbacks), when i notice someone linked to my blog, i always check it out. Guest blogging on other blogs is also a good way to increase traffic.

Posting often...and chatting in forums/leaving comments on other people's blogs...

Totally agree about forum membership. Let people get to know you and what you do. Then people understand that you're credible. Plus you get the added benefit of really getting a chance to see what others with like interests are doing. It's a great education.

I agree about the forum and leaving comments on other people's sites. I take an hour a day to network here...I look at others blogs, leave comments, add their blog to my community... (I have had almost 800 visitors since my blog opened a week and a half ago...) Being out there and active makes a big difference...you want people to see you and know your name.

Ha, its interesting you talk about business cards. My company designs them. I personally think online is a lot better forum for blogs, but if you do decide to go the b-card route, make sure they are well-designed. There really is nothing more embarrassing then cheap looking business cards.

Just thought I would add my thought there.

I've got to agree with taylorblue, the best way to get blog traffic is to actively visit blogs related to yours, leave comments where applicable, and get to know the owners of those blogs. Eventually you get link love, or better yet, get mentioned in their blogs, which sends people your way.

Don't do anything to keep traffic steady. It jumps around, all over the place. My comments volume, for some reason, remains remarkably steady, however. I have a really good, interactive network.

Since you write in a specific niche I would recommend various groups on social networks like MySpace and Facebook. Like other people have said message boards are good.

I've recently started analyzing my incoming traffic through Google Analytics. I think all the other advice here is spot on.
