One of the best foreign films I've ever seen.
Amazing soundtrack from Roque Banos.

Depends on what is your mother tongue to what is foreign to you, I speak a few languages.
Best movie ever I have seen was french and it is Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain. Also known just as "Amelie"
Also zwartboek, a Dutch film then remade in English "Black Book", Dutch version is a lot better!
    1. Jeunelle
@Shy...I saw Amelie and loved it. Great film
Glad you listed a few others I haven't seen but I'll look to rent them. Thanks
    2. Shy

      I vote for Amelie, too!

well my absolute favorite movie is Akira Kurosawa's Ran (1985). It is a adaptation of Shakespeare King Lear set in feudal Japan. The most beautiful movie I have ever seen. I like quite a few other foreign and subtitled flicks though.

Some of my other favorites are: M (1931), La Stradaa (1954), The 400 Blows (1959), Fitzcarraldo (1982)
    1. Jeunelle
@rickbman...Oh my God. I love RAN also Seven Samurai

"The Banquet" was another set on Shakespeare's Hamlet

      awesome, another Kurosawa lover.

Seven Samurai is also one of my favorites. I got to see Ran in the theater about a year ago and it was so beautiful.

oh and while we are on Shakespeare adaptations, Kurosawa also did Throne of Blood (1957) which is based on MacBeth.
    3. Jeunelle
@rickbman...Agreed. Films here in the states just don't do it for me.
It just doesn't seem to appeal to my senses or speak to my soul.
The shoot em up & kill em all technique here in the states has failed me.
    4. rickbman
Well while I do like movies from everywhere, here in the states included, I will say that most of my favorites fall outside of the Hollywood mainstream. Hollywood does manage to get it right occasionally though.
    5. Jeunelle
@rickbman...agreed there are some great films in the states here such as "Citizen Kane" and a bunch of other great ones, though they always seem to have to meet some planned agenda.
Then again what today doesn't have some planned agenda?

"Throne of Blood" ...saw it and loved it.

"Apocalypto" or "Kung Fu Hustle" but I am really not a big fan of reading during a movie; it should be one or the other, not both.
    1. DeadRooster
Kung Fu Hustle is a great movie!

I'm hopeless at choosing favorites, but two I liked best this year were "Egg" and "Tricks". Here's a dreadfully dull blog post that explains: markstoneman.wordpress.com/2008/05/04/filmfest-dc/.

In addition, I love Luis Buñuel movies, That Obscure Object of Desire and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Exterminating Angel are three movies I love. Delicatessen is also great by the same director as Amelie.

@cumba...very nice...Exterminating angel I haven't seen so I'll add this one to the watchlist . Thanks
    2. drjay1966
There was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode inspired by the Exterminating Angel...though I'm guessing that very few viewers picked up on that....

Lots of movies were actually copied from the east and made into american films.

  22. sisterofmercy
I love The Passion of The Christ.
I'm not a religious person but I love the brutality of the film, it makes the whole Jesus thing seem much more believable. It's originally in the form of Arabic used by the people who would have been around during Jesus' time apparently, but it has English subtitles.
    1. Jeunelle
@sisterofmercy....this movie had me in tears through the whole film.
The brutality was right on and it sure had me balling.
Imagine going through all that for people that don't even appreciate what you're trying to do for them. The burden of Christ. I prefer it to any other Christ film too.
  23. bradhart
Ran - it is Shakespeare with samurai.

Can't beat the Italian films of the 1960s. Gina Lollobridgada and early Sophia Loren. Great stuff. The sub-titles were sufferable.

Even the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns were artfully done--with near-perfect lip-syncing.

My all-time favorites are real classics:

    The Seven Samurai
    Black Orpheus
Casablanca - oh wait, that's in English isn't it?:)

Seriously, I watched Black Orpheus again not long ago, on the new disc put out by the Criterion Collection, and I was just blown away. The movie seemed so timeless, it was hard to believe it came out in 1950. And the skies over Rio de Janeiro were so blue - that's what life was like before pollution.
    1. Jeunelle
jan4insight....YES I saw all of those...great films, nice choices.
