I am getting a bulldog for my mom for Christmas....does anyone have any name suggestions.

I was thinking Sadie-mae.
Someone at my job said Lilly.

Now that would just be plain spiteful to make fun of her by calling her bigmouth! LOL
  1. Arcticulates
    Sam... boy
    Samantha... girl
    1. faithsju243
It's a girl and I like Samantha but I also like that for a child and I think some kids might not take to being named after man's best friend. Of course I could be thinking too hard about this.

I am going to keep it on my short list though, thanks Arcticulates.
  2. aningeniousname
Sir Bernard Dribblesworth the fourth earl of woof or Fido
    1. faithsju243
      LMAO dribblesworth too funny!
  3. MidwestMom
I think something undeniably feminine would be fantastic.

    Maybe Penelope...

Or you could go for the 'down home' feel of a name like

    Sasparilla

Or, maybe you could do what my friends do with their pets... Name it after a world leader it resembles...

    Gordon Brown?

Or if you want to be more menacing (and don't have a spelling problem...) "This is my bulldog, Ahmadinejad."

    Have fun with it.
    1. faithsju243
Great so now I am going to have a pooch running around named Condoleezza Rice (Condi for short) or Hillary Clinton (HC for short).

      I kind of like that....
    2. MidwestMom
      Kinda makes you feel powerful...

      Hillary! On the paper! Now!
  4. Stylishchic
How about Meatball, like Adam Sandlers Bull Dog.

    S and H x
  5. DOUGGOFFdotCOM
Oh man I'm soooo jealous. I've been wanting one but I just cannot constitute dropping 3k on a dog. Now if I did have one her name would be Marge.
    1. faithsju243
Yeah they are pretty pricey dogs based on how much it costs the breeders for the brithing process etc. But my mom has been going on and on about it for more than a yr and I know she would never do it for herself so my siblings and I are being good kids for once.

Anyway, Marge....like Marge Simpson...that's pretty good.
    1. faithsju243
Oh oh oh I really like this one. Daisy Mae, she sounds all southern and for some reason I just imagine all bulldogs being southern. I know it makes no sense but I'm a goofball like that.
    2. Ryleigh
Thanks! I really liked your idea for the name Mae.. i really like Sadie too, but Daisy is just... cute.. (ack! i said the cute word)
    1. faithsju243
That was a little too creepy besides bulldogs despite their rough appearance are very gentle dogs. She needs something delicate like Precious.
  6. SweetViolet
    It's a French bulldog, right?

Why not a French name? Marielle, Chantal, Lulu, Simone, Anouk, Colette, Dominique, Francoise, Josette, Monique, Sabine, Sophie, Sylvie, Veronique.

    Personally, I favour Josette.
    1. faithsju243
I like the French thing but no it's an English Bulldog. She is just a little over 1wk now. I anticipate her looking like this when I give her to my mom on Christmas day.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
So as an English Bulldog, maybe something amusingly proper and British.

Right now I'm only getting Hyacinth, like the character Hyacinth Bucket. But you get the drift.
    3. faithsju243
@TSR...ok I like where this is going maybe something like Adelaide Anholt?
    4. ThriftShopRomantic
Adelaide is good. Or something really old-fashioned and stuffy, like Prudence or Hortensia.
    5. SweetViolet
Oh, if she's English, then she needs a proper English name...like Victoria...very dignified. Or Queenie. Or Regina (means queen). Beatrix (Beatrix Potter). Or Hermione. Eliza (after Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady). Honoria.

The family across the road from me has an English bulldog named Alexander. They call him "Zander" for short. He is so darned cute! Alexandra, Alexandria: Alex, Lexie, Sandy, Andria, Dria.

Maybe find some historical British names from Jane Austen's books? Emma is nice.
  7. PetLvr
    Donna Rickles?
    1. faithsju243
That kind of has a ring to it.
    1. faithsju243
Funny you should mention that I was thinking of going there and calling the pooch Sarah P. for short.
  8. timethief
I like very short names for dogs and I avoid the "y" sound at the end of them. For example I prefer Kate to Katie. I would suggest - Gem
    1. faithsju243
I like, reminds me of my favorite cartoon as a kid. Yes this is going on the short list.
      So far it'down to:
      Sadie-Mae
      Daisy-Mae
      Sarah Palin and
      Gem!
  9. chacham100
    "The Awesome one"
    1. faithsju243
Now how does one shorten that...call the pup, One or Awesome?
    2. legbamel
Shouldn't that be "Paw-some One"? Wait, where'd I put my rim shot? [rolls eyes at self]
  10. lotusb
    I like Putz...

    dont know why.
    1. faithsju243
I can work with Putz....it will be added to the short list!
      Sadie-Mae
      Daisy-Mae
      Putz
      Sarah Palin and
      Gem!
    2. lulubelleb
Ummm...you do know that "putz" is Yiddish for a particular part of the male anatomy, right? And it's considered vulgar and inappropriate in polite conversation?
    3. lotusb
Not every word has a pleasant history. And I'm going to take a wild guess that Faith and her fam aren't Yiddish.
    1. faithsju243
It would be odd to call a female dog Ralph besides that's my pateranal grandfather who I'm not all that close with's name and my dad might get his boxers in a bunch if we went there. Men can be so fussy some times.
    1. faithsju243
      Ha-ha now that's just funny!
  11. faithsju243
Ok I might add Wheezie like from the Jeffersons to the short list b/c Bulldogs have a tendency to wheez while breathing.
  12. Rozie818
I suggest "Dripper" or "Drip" for short
or let your mom name her.
  13. Vinty
    how about Justice or Broc

edit: female name could be Elsa or Casidy
  14. dosyrosie
As its a bull dog, I think something starting with B
    like
    Bella
    Bernice
    Barbie!

    Or just go silly
    Deifer Dog!!
(*cough* Deifer Dog - 'D For' Dog ..) never mind
  15. exinco
    The animal "Batista"
  16. cranelegs
i think dogs are intelligent in ways humans are not. i always wanted to name a dog "Know", which is a good example of a human being stupid.
  17. dreamylilac
I just got a border collie in august (male) which is named Winston. Last weekend a got a mini rat terrier (female) named Bailey...you can check out my blog and see the little rat....

  20. timethief
    @faith
How about one of these two choices in honor of the season?
    Holly
    Berry
    1. faithsju243
My brother vetoed Holly and Berry he wants to name the dog after his favorite character on Tru Blood, Sookie! I don't really care for this name, maybe I should not name the dog at all and leave it up to my mom, I mean it is her pooch after all.
  21. legbamel
I like Daisy Mae or Daisy-dog. I like the name Holly for a girl dog, too.
  22. BlueSunshine
My ex's English Bulldog's name is Pudgie.

He also goes by Mr. Brown, Pig, Pudgie Buckets, and Wubby.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Pudgie is good-- it sort of calls it likes it sees it.
  23. loverofjazz
    Bitey McChewmeister
  24. aningeniousname
    Huge knackers Bob.
  25. distressingdelilah
Spike..definitely Spike. Though I do know a bulldog named Lilly.
    1. faithsju243
Nothing like stating the obvious...ha ha!
  26. MadMadMargo

  29. wastedlola

    1. faithsju243
      Any suggestions for a girl?
    2. loverofjazz
      Miss Bitey McChewmeister!
  31. lulubelleb
How 'bout Bertha or Ethel or Madge?
  32. jackpayne
    Mary, Terry, Jerry, or Keri.
    1. faithsju243
      I see a theme here!
  33. inmyredhead
I would suggest something very simple, very basic, and or nickname- ish- because as you said, it will be your moms dog and what ever name you choose just might end up as her middle name.

It's so sweet of you all to get her the dog, but that's just one of the best parts of getting one... naming it yourself.
  34. Sonnenblumen
How about PUSSY or Churchill for short?
  35. klaraau01
I've known one British Bulldog years ago and his name was Baldrick, as in "Blackadder", but since you are getting a girl - how about another suggestion for Bella?
  36. scottsaidso
Kluggman, Belvedere, Butkiss, Maude, Winston, and Bubba are all good choices.
  37. thingys
I came up with a few new ones -- Please don't sue me

Desmond, Thatcher, Buzz, Snotley, Hugo, Fetch, NastyFacedSOB, & Tulip
  38. faithsju243
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions we pick up the puppy this Saturday...we decided to name her Sasha.
  39. AndiBob
The next one could be... Bozo
