Most Internet users put one of these two websites as their homepage on their web browsers.
Name one you prefer as your homepage from those two and explain why?

I personally use Google as my homepage, mainly because of the simplicity of this web page, but please give me your opinions about which Homepage you prefer!
  2. JacobDiv
WHAT? Most internet users put Yahoo or Google as their home page?
Where did you get that info?

As for simplicity, for what it's worth, I default my browser to BLANK page.

Google search box is built into my browser (firefox and IE 7 both offer google search box as part of the toolbar). using that box, I never have to surf to google.com, but instead, the browser takes me directly to the search results page on google.
    1. Techfox
Well that will work with you if you only want to use web search, but for using directly Image search or any other search, it is more preferred to put one of these sites as your homepage, although a blank page is more simpler and faster to load, but unfortunately both search bars in IE7 and Firefox 2.0 only have Web Search, hope Firefox 3.0 will have a more specialized and enhanced Search bar.
    2. janeycatte
      I agree with misterdog.

I have weather.com.au/ as mine, so I can always check it first thing in the morning.
    3. Techfox
Well of course toolbars are made to be very helpful in browsers!
  3. RTBjr73
    I am an igoogle fan
    1. JacobDiv
my blog is a form of igoogle, at least in my twisted mind.

igoogle is a good benchmark for the kinds of things people need to be able to do for themselves on their own websites.
    2. Techfox
well I used to use iGoogle since I always used to look on the feed reader I had put on my iGoogle page, which give me all the news posted in Google news but now I prefer to only use Google! since its more simpler and faster to load!
    3. rearvumirr
igoogle for me too! love setting it up so all my stuff is ready to see when I log on
  4. timethief
    (1) I use Google for my home search page on my Firefox browser because it's more comprehensive.
    (2) I use Yahoo on my home page for my IE7 browser because it picks up many sites that have yet to be indexed by Google.
    (3) I use every search engine available to me.
    (4) I would prefer not to see one company with a monopoly. I have no such thing as "corporate loyalty".
N.B. There are multiple threads in the searchbox on this same topic that you may wish to consult www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/search.php?q=Yahoo or Google
    1. Techfox
Well you are right, but you could also set in your IE to have multiple Homepages, therefore you could add all search engine sites as your Homepage and just pick one each time!
  5. djibs
    Google...it's just a long habit...
    1. Techfox
well I agree with you on that!
  6. jaffermaniar
Most IE users still have MSN as their homepage and most Firefox users still have Google as their homepage.

I mostly use Google to search out of familiarity and simplicity.

But if I am doing a research-paper I use LexisNexis which is a paid for service and it digs out all information there is about a particular subject out there.
    1. Techfox
well yes, some sites if put homepage might help you a lot in doing what you want to do on Internet, but some prefer search engines. since most of what they do is searching for stuff!
  7. Shireen
    neither, just a blank page
    1. Techfox
Well as I said above a blank page may have some advantages, but also it has some drawbacks for you can't search directly as your browser is launched.
  8. jones7757
Both are good but i still prefer Google as my homepage.
    1. BennyGreenberg
Well Ekim and myself say yahoo - especially with the price of food and fuel - Who can afford Google anyway.
  9. ekim941
I use yahoo because it's cheaper
    1. Techfox
I didn't understand your reply, since both web pages could be freely put as homepage, please read the statement above containing the topic, and then reply!
    2. BennyGreenberg
I agree with Ekim - Yahoo is cheaper and that is why I use it
    3. ekim941
Yeah, google is too rich for my blood
    4. BennyGreenberg
A few years ago I would have interest but now - I would have to stick to yahoo
    5. Techfox
well I don't see how Wealth affects a simple Homepage as Google!
    6. BennyGreenberg
Well Ekim and myself say yahoo - especially with the price of food and fuel - Who can afford Google anyway.
    1. Techfox
Well then you must not answer, for I asked google or yahoo and not could you spam me or not! and second time anyone has another homepage other than goole or yahoo please write only the name and not the link!
  10. Viento
Google!! I love google, because it has more information than Yahoo, and it is organized in a better way than Yahoo. That's in connection with search engines, but in connection to messengers I'd rather used Yahoo! than Google. Not to mention that the best messenger for me is HOTMAIL.
    Cheers!
  11. jeremylong
Yahoo - mainly because I'm so used to seeing Yahoo!(for many years) when I log in. Just an old habit haha
    1. Techfox
Well with me it is with Google, since it was really the first search engine I used! but what we can do, can't change old habits!
  12. Darkblaze37
Google. I like to have everything I need in one place, you know: Search, Blogger, Picasa, Reader, Docs and spreadsheets, Gmail, Calendar, etc
    1. Techfox
you are definitely right the above toolbar in google, is so helpful and makes the page look even more simple!
  13. vfanblog
Google for search engine, Yahoo for mail
    1. Techfox
do you have a certain reason for using Yahoo as mail and not Google or hotmail? or are you just used to use yahoo for mail?
  14. DrowseyMonkey
I use Yahoo for mail and Google for search. I find Yahoo mail the best of all the free web mail, it sorts your spam much better, and you can set it up to look like outlook if you want. As for searches, I find google givea me what I want faster than yahoo.
    1. Techfox
Well some prefer gmail more than Yahoo mail, but that is just opinion, for none of this two mail services is completely bad, but some are more preferred by some than others!
    2. DrowseyMonkey
ture, it's a personal choice. I prefer the way yahoo is set up. I have a gmail account and never use it, I find the page too 'busy' for my simple brain I also had a hotmail account, but again, didn't find it as user friendly as yahoo.
    3. Techfox
well yes I guess you are right simplicity is a great factor in choosing services, take the example of Facebook and other simple services with simple web sites!
  15. sanjidas
    Google all the way!
    1. Techfox
I like your enthusiasm, but others prefer to use a lot of things, so they can obtain all advantages of features in them!
  16. lordiwanttobewhole
I'm a google fan! Sometimes I even google myself!
    1. Techfox
well I do too, it is just fun and makes you proud of your self, to find yourself on google search lists, and find some of your popular blog posts there!
    2. asithi
I google myself to make sure there is nothing about me in the internet. Except my blogging. Then, I want it plaster every where.
    3. Techfox
well for a blog or site, google search lists bring you a lot of viewers searching for the topic of your blog or site!
  17. joyseth32
google is easy to find so i am using google instead of yahoo
    1. Techfox
well both search engines have some disadvantages and advantages!
  18. BennyGreenberg
Don't you all find that google has priced itself out of the market?
  19. wolfcreek
I'm a bigger fan of my own sites. But if I had to choose, I'd pick...uhm....weatherunderground.com.

I'm a weather nerd, so I get more news from what's going on in the skies than I do in the news.

I do check Yahoo Sports, but I'm not big on the delivery of news from there or Google. I get breaking news from CNN. I guess I'm not very wired.
    1. Techfox
great comment, but next time don't include link please!
    1. Techfox
you use Mac homepage, can you explain why do you use it, and not known search engines as homepage?
  20. Cmcandre
Min changes regularly, not the main one but most of the tabs. I default onto my gmail account, but I also run firefox with add-ins so google calender pops up on the same page. A lot of times I add an extra tabs (firefox allows you to set a homepage as either a single site or a set of tabs), such as my blog, weather.com, espn scoreboard during playoffs and a few other ones that come up from time to time, Digg if it's a slow week at work, or other sites that I have some reason to follow for a while. I prefer doing this to iGoogle's widgets cause I'd rather see the whole page and all info.

If you don't have Firefox iGoogle has tabs as well and there is a widget out there that lets you put any page in that tab. That way if you revert to going to Google all the time, and from different computers you are always looking at the same thing. I used this a lot in school when I would log in from computer centers around campus.
    1. Techfox
well I agree with you firefox add-ons are so helpful, and iGoogle is very fun to use!
  21. AainaA
I use my homepage as my homepage - I love both search engines though - but I never never in my entire life being online put someone else's homepage to open in my browser other than mine :-) which btw, is at www.AainaA.com
    1. Techfox
Hey please don't add link but write the name of your site, for I consider this spam to block question by saying none and add your link!
  22. katarokkar
    google + firefox = awesomeness
    1. Techfox
I could never disagree with this formula of yours! lol!
  23. HomeHaven
yahoo has been disappointing. definitely google.
    1. Techfox
Could explain more about how yahoo has been disappointing to you?!
    2. HomeHaven
Yahoo searches aren't as accururate as google searches.

      Yahoo doesn't index my site.

      Yahoo is a bully.

Why? Google was my chosen home page -but somehow? yahoo usurped it without my permission and i cannot change my homepage back to google which i love. now everytime i log on to the internet - there's the yahoo page - i'm stuck with it.

      Yahoo is a silly name.
    3. Techfox
I agree with you about the searching part, can you tell me which browser do yo use? since yahoo and as far as I know cannot make itself homepage without you agreeing !
    4. HomeHaven
I never agreed to anything. Yahoo commandeered my computer!

My browser is Microsoft Explorer. When i go into 'interet options' on the tools tab, a window pops up saying, 'this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. please contact your systems administrator' (which is me). I never put these restrictions in place. since Yahoo is my new homepage all of a sudden...well just do the math.

      Can you help?
    5. Techfox
Well I recommend ro unistall your browser, and install something more secure like firefox or opera, which will let you choose to put the homepage you want!
    6. HomeHaven
thank you i'll think about it
  24. fibs
    Google, for me any time!
    1. Techfox
well, as I said some of us just adore setting Google as our homepage!
  25. sanjidas
Yep, everybody has her own preference, of course. Some like Ask, some like Yahoo, some like Google.
    How about AskYahooGoole?

    www.askyahoogle.com/
    1. Techfox
Well, I think you gave the best solution for the conflict! take some letters from each one and join them together!
  26. jan4insight
Ohmigosh, Google google google I love google! I do everything in Google - gmail, blog, documents, photos, and maps. My Yahoo account is just for junk email, and the one discussion group I'm in that runs on Yahoo. I hate yahoo because of annoying ads and the hard-to-read font; it was even hard to sign in until I got my own computer and was able to stay logged in. But I'd croak if I had to do everything on Yahoo.
    1. Techfox
I agree with you no the last part, but remember that as you love google, some love Yahoo and how it looks, but we as Google fans, don't really care about graphics and fonts, but care about simplicity, and speed in loading, which Google provides!
    2. jan4insight
Techfox, about your reply to my comment ... I was just stating my preference and why. I didn't know there was a party line we google fans were supposed to adhere to. I'm a goggle fan, and I care about fonts and such. What's the problem with that?

Yes I know there are folks who love Yahoo, obviously, or it wouldn't be here. I don't really understand why, but they're entitled to their opinion. Take what you like and leave the rest.
  27. BennyGreenberg
I just don't understand where all you googlers are getting the money

Mike - you figured it out yet?
  28. gmoney
  29. sanjidas
If you want compare search results from Google and Yahho side-by-side in the same window, try this link!

    www.syncrisis.com/?compare=Access%C2%AE
    1. Techfox
please don't the link next time, for you can only say the name of the web site, but can't add your link since it is considered to be spamming, Though I like the idea of this site, I do not like putting a link here since this is not shameless blog promotion but a general discussion!
    2. sanjidas
Oh, sorry! I have seen links in other general discussion threads, I had no idea it's considered bad.
Will provide only site titles next time!
    3. Techfox
Don't worry about what you did, but remmeber not to repeat it next time, for I am completely sure that you have good intetntions and would hate report you as spamming!
    4. sanjidas
      Spamming??? Um...no, I don't think that's what sharing these url's amount to.
It is of course according to MY understanding and we can agree to disagree on this.
  30. kat822
    YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    1. BennyGreenberg
I agree - who can affor google
    2. Techfox
great to see some Yahoo fans here, but the thing about affording Google and all that silly unrelated stuff being replied here on this post!, please convince others in yahoo and not attack Google!
  31. jan4insight
I don't understand the comments about affording Google? The features we've been talking about are free!

Oh - maybe you think Google is paying us to say these nice things about it? Ha Ha Ha ...
  32. captainobvious22
I've got iGoogle set up as homepage for my Firefox browser and MyYahoo for my Safari Browser -- and blank page for my Opera browser. I like to have options apparently.
  33. timethief
The fact that I have two different search engines as my homepage using two different browsers does not indicate that they are the only search engines that I use. When I'm researching I use other search engines as well. That is, of course, what research is all about and those who rely on only one search engine are bound to miss locating important data, thus, they cannot state that their research was comprehensive.

To avoid making apples to oranges comparisons, sounding like a fangirl or fanboy and creating a thread lacking in substance, it's important to know how all search engines operate, as well as, the ways they differ. www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/SearchEngines.html

"Google alone not always sufficient, however. Less than half the searchable Web is fully searchable in Google. Overlap studies show that more than 80% of the pages in a major search engine's database exist only in that database. Getting a "second opinion" is therefore often worth your time. We no longer recommend using any meta-search engines." -- UC Berkeley - Teaching Library Internet Workshops
    1. Techfox
I appreciate you posting your opinon but please next time avoid adding links! but onlt saying the name of your site!
  34. timethief
Here's an example of a search string: "how to write a thesis". If you look carefully at the results and make comparisons you will see that using more than one search engine is the intelligent thing to do when researching any topic.

    Google results:
    www.google.com/custom?q=how+to+write+a+thesis&sa=Search&client=pub-47946145...
    Yahoo results
    ca.search.yahoo.com/search?p=how+to+write+a+thesis&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&co...
    MSN
    search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=how+to+write+a+thesis&FORM=MSNH
    Lycos
    search.lycos.com/?query=how+to+write+a+thesis&x=36&y=12
    Dogpile
    www.dogpile.com/dogpile/ws/results/Web/how to write a thesis/1/417/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true

    @techfox
BTW the best things in life are free. No one owns a thread when they post it on the BC forum it belongs to the community and none of us can dictate what others post into it.
    1. sanjidas
      Timethief,
I don't think we are supposed to put links in this thread, because it is a General Discussion thread, not a Shameless Blog Promotion one. I am sure Techfox would hate to report us as spamming, although our intentions are good!

I like the links. So thanks a lot!

      Techfox,
I don't think it is spamming if we put url's here - for we are not promoting our own blogs here. Just my two cents!
    2. Techfox
Ok ths links are allowed sice they show the comparison between search engines! and I want to thank you timethief fpr your conributons to these discussions!
    3. sanjidas
      Thanks for understanding finally! lol
  35. buyersweb
This question again lol...my blog is my home page. I used to use yahoo heaps but now i use google more because the results have gone a bit weird in yahoo lately. And Msn results a few years ago used to be great, now the websites that come up are really unrelated in my opinion. I don't know what happened to Msn.
  36. mdsanta
I AM GOOGLE & GOOGLE IS ME
    1. Techfox
Well then your are lucky to have all thesee fans here!. lol!
  37. genopianist54
Even if i'm dead and reborn again I'd choose Google
    1. Techfox
Well that is one great statment, but can you explain why will you always choose google??
  38. noemiruth
Google definitely. I find the search results to be more relevant.
    1. Techfox
I agree wioth you, for when I use Yahoo sometimes for searching I get unrelated results about what I am searching in addition to unhelpful results!
  39. tonichka
    google.. damn it
