So I was told not so long ago that lower page rank - like 2 isn't good. LOL all this time I thought 2 was close to #1 and the best!

I've been thinking my blog was the shizz for so long now, but really its not.

Exactly. Meaning all the time I thought I had a great blog, it isn't that great. I didn't know.
    2. timethief
Which of your blogs do you mean and how old is the blog please?

Reposting due to the comment deletion above.

The highest PageRank is 10/10 and the lowest PageRank is 0/10.
These are the positive factors that Google’s algorithm takes into consideration:
      1. Keyword Use In Title Tag
      2. Global Link Popularity Of The Site
      3. Anchor Text Of Incoming Links
      4. Link Popularity Within The Site
      5. Age Of The Site

These are the negative factors that Google’s algorithm takes into consideration:
      1. Server Is Often Inaccessible To Googlebot
      2. Content Which Is Very Similar Or Duplicate to Existing Content On The Web
      3. External Links To Low Quality Sites
      4. Participation In Link Schemes or Actively Selling Links
      5. Duplicate Meta Tags On More Pages

      Its Jamaica My Way.

And thanks for all that info!!
    2. timethief
You're welcome. How old is it?
    3. JamCan
      I only started it Jan.1/09

Once I was up to PR 3 for a week or so! I have noticed a dramatic decrease in traffic though, since my server thing happened, my blog was offline for almost 2 weeks.
    4. timethief
Then PR2 is not bad at all. All you have to do now is follow all the instructions and it will improve. It's really important that you use tagging, keywords and keyword phrases effectively. Every time you create a post you have to imagine an interested reader out there and what they could type into a search engine that will bring them to your blog.

I popped a wordpress specific link into your shoubox that you can work through step by step. I also recommend you download and install these plugins:
      All in One SEO Pack
      semperfiwebdesign.com/portfolio/wordpress/wordpress-plugins/all-in-one-seo-...
      Google XML Sitemaps
This plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO.

My blog (Discovering Mandarin) is about 2 months old gets about 500 Unique a week, and still is not moving up the Google Page Rank.

    How long will this take?

      How long will this take?

Please read and act on all of the information provided in the first comment above. The situation is not merely one of time passing. It's one of the blogger learning how to be skillful when it comes to structuring their blog, their posts, use of keywords, tagging and much much more.
  2. CSouthwell
Thanks, I do archive and use tags fairly well so far as I can tell.

I use keywords where possible without spamming the content with them, and find a good % of traffic finding me through google on the search terms optimised for.

Just don't understand that lack of page rank. You have a great blog btw.
    1. timethief
Do you have any paid links on your blog? If you are blogging for money then PR can be a major issue. Once your site has a higher PR then higher paying writing opportunities become available to you. However, if your write for services like ReviewMe, Text Link Ads, Smorty, and PayPerPost then it’s important to understand that Google doesn’t like paid links, if you have them and if your site doesn’t indicate them with “nofollow” or, if you’re active on the Internet selling links on your site then your PR will suffer. The nofollow tag allows a site to add a link that abstains from being an editorial vote. Using "nofollow" is a machine-readable way to specify that a link doesn’t have to be counted as a vote by a search engine.
  3. CSouthwell
I put an occasional amazon affiliate i, but certainly not more than about 10 over 100 posts so far.

The nofollow tag, how is that incorperated, or is that already done by Amazon in their code they supply?

To be honest, I really want to hit a good page rank so I can start getting some adverts that are worth the trouble. My idea was to keep it nice and clean until then.
    1. husdal
But you do have a page rank: 0. And zero is indeed a page rank, it's more than nothing or just blank. Not many new blogs have even that after just two months.

I wouldn't worry about the oocasional Amazon link.

However, you should look into your coding
      validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://discoveringmandarin.blogspot.com
Almost 500 errors...that is way too much.
While 0 errors is practically impossible to achieve you should try to bring it down to some 20 errors.

Your blog appears to be slow in loading and using Firebug I found a catm.pg item that will not load. I have no idea what that is, though. Besides being somehow related to your category menu.

The errors are unlikely to influence your page rank, but it does influence the reader experience, depending on the browser they use, and with a great blog like yours you don't want to turn readers away...
    2. CSouthwell
thanks that is actually really helpful. what a useful tool, hadn't known it existed. Will bookmark now.

I will have a look into those errors.

      Cheers

My Blog finally got up to 3 without any help from me.. but.. I may have lost that now and have to start over because the place I had my blog domain located (google pages) now has changed to (google sites) and are transferring all the (pages) sites over.. But... the new (sites) will not accept CSS or Javascript.. which my blog has both, so I have moved it to a new home... on FatCow..

Now.. the problem that may cause my rank to fall is when I had my blog on (pages) they had templates that didn't work with how I wanted my pages to look so I had to use a portal page, now it's new home I don't need a portal page which has changed the address and most of the links to the pages slightly.. but enough to maybe cause the rank to fall..

I am not an expert on google ranking. So I will keep checking my pages and see what happens.. As of now I am still working on links that need to be changed.. on some pages. Sigh!

But I think my blog likes it's new home much better now, and is there to stay! Yippee!
    1. husdal
I may have lost that now
Not yet. You still show as 3.
  5. JamCan
After reading all this I don't feel so bad now. My blog was actually PR2 within 3 months of creating it. It happened fast.

I will definitely have a look at optimizing it better from the info you provided TT!. Thanks.

hmm, I have been blogging for 4 months and have a rank of 2 so now I'm feeling kinda good lol ..
  7. Maladjusted
I have only just found about the existence of google rank (because of this thread) and to my chagrin, but not surprise remain at the dizzy heights of zero. Kinda spoils the bid for universal hegemony.

Would anyone like to advise me on how I might improve this situation either in generic terms (what you'd tell anyone), or specific (if you've ever visited my blog?)

    Best,

    -Mal
    1. timethief
My suggestion is that you follow the instructions found in the posts that I indicated above. The posts contain relevant information that you will need to comprehend and then act on. I have "seen" your blog but that's not really relevant. What is relevant is what the Google bots "see".

This is a link to a simple HTML validator validator.w3.org/
These are the results for your blog which fails validation.
Errors found while checking this document as XHTML 1.0 Strict! Result: 516 Errors, 200 warning(s)
In order to correct them you will have to download Firebug for Firefox and then locate and correct them.

This is a link to the CSS validator jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
These are the results for your blog which fails validation. Sorry! We found the following errors (42)
    2. Maladjusted
      Merci, T.T.

I shall look into this. I have used that validator once before, but wasn't sure how to correct the errors. Now, I shall get firebug..

      Best,

      -Mal.

I can't get a page rank. And my site has a bunch of errors, but I don't want to download Firefox. Is there any other way to fix them?

Thanks for all the helpful tips! As a new blogger with topics having a narro focus, it seems difficult to get a lot of traffic!
