Hmm ... the scariest movie I've seen is probably Shutter. Didn't have to rely on gore or blood-stained walls to be scary. It was just horror done right.

As for gore ... it should only be used when necessary. It's overdone these days. I'd like to be scared, not nauseated.

it depends on what you find scary... i find suspense the worst thing.. i love hills have eyes

I actually prefer films that let your imagination fill in some of the scary visuals, rather than rely on overt gore. The original "The Fog" was good for that.

I'd say the goriest film I'd seen was the original Evil Dead... that was fairly relentless. I do love Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, though.

      Like the original "the Haunting."

    You mean "An Inconvenient Truth"?

i love asia gore , these movie are so bloody that it's become humour
film such as machine girl, tokyo gore police are so funny
  6. Sam1982
Braindead ( aka Dead Alive ) holds the record for being the goriest.

But over all my favourite horror at the moment would have to be the Dawn of the dead remake. Its the one movie that I watch over and over. It has a bit of everything.
    1. Stillthinking
Really? You like it better than the Ring? Or Audition? Audition was so disgusting I could barely get through it.
  7. Sam1982
Havent seen Audition yet - its kind of like a fatal attraction type movie isnt it?

I saw Miike's ( director of audition ) film Ichi the Killer. Way over the top violence but there really must have been something lost in translation because the story line was really bizarre.
    1. Stillthinking
You have to see Audition. It's totally bizarro. Yes, kind of like Fatal Attraction, but far, far more intense with a vengeance twist.

Also, if you like Asian horror, you should watch Old Boy. Not gory, just really messed up psychological horror.

audition is a cult movie, ever feel the pain of a needle in your eye?

I've heard of that one too - i think the Asians are pretty good with their horror, it could be that their folklore and mythology is different to ours or that ( japan in particular ) they seem to do things by extremes. I must admit im getting sick of the long haired female ghosts that you see in asian ghost stories. Its all too much the same
    1. Stillthinking
The reason why you see Asian banshees in horror movies so much is that the enraged female ghost is a huge part of Japanese (and Korean and Chinese) horror mythology.

Kind of like how Americans have an obsession with zombies and Europeans have an obsession with vampires.

Yeah I've heard that It would be better if they could change the look a little bit from time to time though, they all seem to have the long black hair and a white dress.I'd take a good zombie horror any day though, I have a soft spot for those, they're the perfect villain.

There havent been many good werewolf movies lately though, not since dog soldiers. There was supposed to be a follow up to that but it's never seen the light of day
    1. Stillthinking
I have never been partial to the werewolf movie. Not glamorous enough. Nothing grosses me out quite like a zombie movie.

"28 days later" took me several tries to watch without hiding behind my hands. I still have a hard time getting through it.

"Dawn of the Dead" the remake was really good. I managed to get through it the first time though without any nightmares or hiding.
    2. Sam1982
I wasnt much of a fan of 28 days later, in my opinion they weren't zombies, they were just infected. I know that sounds silly but when I think zombie I think of arms missing, stomachs ripped open. Something that you look at and think the FX team had a field day coming up with the look.

When I was around 6 years old, my brother was baby sitting myself and sister and decided "Evil Dead" would be a great movie to put on!! That had me terrified for a while after that.

"The Thing" is a fantastic film that still holds up today... in my opinion.

I had a similar experience - mine was friday the 13th 3 though. I was about 5 or 6 and loved it. I guess thats what got me started on horror movies, I loved being scared and at that age seeing a horror movie was somewhat "forbidden"
    2. ariwat
My Mom had nightmares about "The Thing"... said it was one of the scariest movies she's ever watched. =) She scares so easily.
  11. codesucker
I've only seen one Gore movie - 'an inconvenient truth' it was pretty scary. I haven't seen his other movies
  12. Manz
Forbidden is right - my folks were not happy to hear what our brother did! Had I made the choice to watch it, my experience may have been different!!
  13. Sam1982
Yeah my mum wasnt happy either but because we always hired out movies as a weekend thing as kids and my brother brought home horrors all the time ( and mum wanted to see them too ) she let me watch them so long as I didnt tell the other kids at school about them.
So I didnt, I just wrote stories about them in my school books which lead my teacher to suggest I needed to see a shrink.

I love scary movies! The Shining is my favorite. More scary than gory.
  15. xmarks
Ok. I'm surprised nobody brought up Al Gore's movie.

One of the most messed up movies I saw was Videodrome with James Woods. It isn't really a gore/blood type movie but it is pretty wild.
  16. kat822
Oh I thought you were talking about Al Gore, oh wait he is a horror
  17. lolosianipar
I was a big fan of horror movies, but I don't know why I can't stand it anymore now... old heart I guess hahaha..

But I think the Ring is the scariest ever, Asian truly have these capabilities of making the ghost even scarier than it should be.

and the goriest? Arrkghh... can't stand blood everywhere....

i think exorcist are one on my list!!

I don't necessarily find gore and splatter films to be scary, though I do enjoy them quite a bit. Sam1982 would be right in saying that the goriest film of all time is Academy award winning Director, Peter Jackson's Dead Alive! Amazing practical gore FX work and it is a blast!

A more recent film that works as a scary movie and a gore film is the 2008 French splatter-piece, Inside (À l'intérieur). A creepy and well paced thriller in the vein of Carpenter's Halloween, mixed with a slew of gore scenes that are at times gut-wrenching and at other times, incredibly fun. Great movie.

I agree with the posters who pointed out that scary and gory films aren't necessarily the same. Gory films: maybe they're not the most gory but I enjoy David Lynch's stuff.

A scary film (admittedly I saw it when young): Disney's "The Watcher In The Woods" anyone else remember it?

I love horror movies and gore movies but I don't like movies that have a lot of special effects.. it just ruins it for me. I like movies about people just going nut; movies that really COULD happen if someone just snapped, not a bunch of fake crap that would never happen. I can't believe some of you said the Ring was the best one, are you serious?? I thought the ring was so stupid, my husband and I were bored throughout the entire movie! The Creepiest movie I have watched is Cannibal Holocaust. It takes a lot to really scare me or gross me out. I like movies that keep me on the edge of my seat and/or make me gasp, thinking, "holy crap that had to hurt!!". I do like the Saw movies just because of the gory aspect of it and the crazy scenarios they come up with in the movies. One movie I really like is Funny Games. It's not really gory but high suspense and just plain crazy. Go look it up on Youtube!
