What are your own ideas for a creative date? During economic times like these, your love life does not have to come to an end, does it? Being financially savvy can be an attractive attribute, no? I've got some ideas in LA and OC, but would love to hear and learn from others. Pay it forward...

It depends.
But if you're really creative (as in artistic) a good date is to go to a painting place where you paint ceramics while sipping some sort of juice or coffee... If they don't have one of those in your area - let me know - I'm starting a business soon - and I might come to your area!
The reason why this is a GREAT dating idea - is because it allows you to talk, create, and share thoughts while keeping busy and gets rid of the uncomfortable just getting to know each other phase.
But... My favorite dates are:
1) A picnic at a beach - or park or someplace fun...
2) Rollerskating Rinks... (for any age - any style - it's fun being uncoordinated and being together)
3) Amusement parks - I LOVE amusement parks - rollercoasters
4) I love going to poetry reading or open mike music places
5) Game Night - I love going on a date with someone who is willing to go to either their friend's house or my friend's house to play games like: Poker, Pictionary, Monopoly, etc.
6) Taking a date to do volunteer work - like helping homeless people in a spaghetti feed.
7) Going to a little league game - just to watch the kids play is a riot (I've gone and watched little hockey players at ice rinks as well)
8) Going to the ZOO - anywhere is fun.
All of those things cost minimal amounts of money (except the amusement park). Most of them are non-intimidating. Most of them are interactive and allow you to focus on something ELSE besides just each other - which can be nerve wracking.-
Hi, wagerwitch and all! I've shared some of the same ideas on my blog (great minds think alike). Here are some specific ideas on my blog:
0) Cheap Date Idea #5: Paint pottery in your pajamas at "Pottery Mine" Studios.
2) Cheap Date Idea #22: Ice skating at sunset by the beach in Redondo Beach.
3) Cheap Date Idea #26: Free Magic Mountain tickets.
CrazyTsu: I've got many beach ideas on my blog, which you can search for by key word "beach".
Theresa111: Check out my Cheap Date Idea #4 at Griffith Observatory.
Sway: There are no forests in Los Angeles as far as I know, but perhaps my Cheap Date Idea #13 at The Huntington Botanical Gardens is similar to your idea.
Scenexg: I haven't found any good deals at the zoo yet, but Cheap Date Idea #6 at the Roundhouse Aquarium on Manhattan Beach Pier is all about visiting sea animals for free.
Dbowles: Cheap Date #25 is all about going to free movie screenings, so save yourself the $20 for popcorn and soda.
You all have a great ideas! I especially like the ones that are specific in details. Keep 'em coming!

Buy a $20 little tent (if you don't already have one), a cheap bottle (or two) of wine, some tapas (cheese, bruchetta, strawberries, olives, almonds) and a few blankets. Pitch your tent at the nearest beach and spend the day. Bring music, books...read to each other. I did this on a 6th date once and had a BALL.

Cook for him at your place. Make a mixed green salad, and a tri-colored pasta with some sauce (if you don't know how to make sauce, go online for some great recipes) and serve just that. Put some cheese and crackers out and you will be spending less than $20 bucks, given that you can provide for a $10 bottle of red wine. Cheap wine does not mean "bad" wine. Make it interesting, put some really good jazz or music that the both of you will enjoy. Do not put on the TV or a movie - this limits talk time. I always found that my best dates had taken place in someone's home or mine, where the food was homemade and the ambience was incredible. Light lots of candles, but don't make it TOO romantic - have a fine line between romantic and fun.
Enjoy yourself! -
Planetarium. French bistro. Moonlight walk on a safe beach. Holding hands. Then say goodnight and go home. There is nothing more romantic than thinking about your evening together and when you will see the other person again. Anticipation and waiting allows people the time to get to appreciate and enjoy. Courting should come back in style.

The beach gets my vote. Follow up the evening with candle-light dinner after watching the sun go down. Or perhaps have some sandwiches in the back of your car
BTW I am in OC as well and I have been to Laguna Beach. It's good-
I agree with dbowles. You want to do something somewhat different for a first date. Waiting for kissing in the back of the car to make a date good is missing the point. Thats the same as saying the sex is what makes the date good. The point of a good date is to have fun getting to know each other on a personal level. The physical activities come later and are a separate thing.
