Topics: bad for the enviroment, enviromental abuse, government waste
I just watched something that makes me sick. The Big time Farmer that farms the fields up and down our road came into today to harvest the corn. They buy new equipment every year, they waste alot of corn every year, and they claim it all to the government. We have fed our live stock off the waste in those fields for years. We can fill up the feed room in our barn in just half a field and feed all winter and half the summer. The other fields lay to waste. They also use sprays that are bad for the enviroment and get paid to do that too. What are your thoughts on this waste and enviromental abuse?

I got a little confused over the part about your feeding your livestock on waste from his fields. Does that mean he is letting you turn your cows out to graze on the stalks and downed ears his combine left behind? If so, that sounds like a good neighbor, even it you don't approve of his methods. There is a big difference between little farmers with a diversified farm and the big operations that cultivate thousands of acres and know how to milk the system. The big operations are surviving. What is curious to me is how hard it is to find one of those big farms (in the Midwest) that is growing anything you actually buy much of at the grocery store. It's nothing like when my grandfather raised a family through the depression, farming with horses on 120 acres, saving his own seed, spreading manure for fertilizer, pinching the bugs and hoeing the weeds (not spraying). He knew how to milk a cow (and showed me how), but not the system.
