Just recieved a letter from the Minister of Revenue

Bunch of Jerks. Been on the phone for hours now trying to get this issue resolved.

Now I got a ton of writing to do.

I sold our Motel in 2005.

Seems that the buyers have handed it back to the bank.
Good for them.

Seems I signed this stupid piece of paper to allow an American to buy the business. Since they have never owned one in Ontario.
Signed on as "Director of Corporation" The bank stated at the time that I could NEVER be held accountable, responsible or no one could come back at me, in any way shape or form

Well they were wrong. Now they are chasing me for Retail Sales Tax.

Have over 12 letters to write and get them sent to different Gov't offices just to get myself removed as a Director

Take heed my friends (esp if you live Canada) Never sign for anyone to get into Canada

Nothing against anyone but you can be accountable

Everything in writing With day of modern ages you would think I could have sent them a fax. As it was had to pay for Priority Post

I mean who the heck did they think wrote it in the first place. Bunch of jerks

    Whoa.. that is rough.

    I HATE contractual crap.

I am pretty anal about signing anything without having a lawyer read it and then read it again and then read it once more. Then he has to explain it to me at least twelve times before I sign my name.

Good luck with getting it resolved!

My Lawyer at the time told us that it would last only a year

      Boy was he wrong.

Sounds like you need a lawyer...

As a corporation - how can the director be held accountable personally? I don't know Canadian law - but in this country - director/officer liability is limited through incorporation...

    Good luck.

If push comes to shove I most certainly will.

Not sure how the laws work but Revenue said I was being held accoutable.

Seeing as how the new owners gave up and handed it back to the bank

There is a sidestep to take into consideration.

A director, is ultimately responsible for illegal activities of the company.
      not paying taxes is illegal...

I've heard of cases using that bridge before. NOt sure about how Canadian law sees it though.

Hey, wenfri, let me know how it works out. This is the type of thing that I rant about on my blog: wayoutsidemybrain.wordpress.com I hate BIG GOVERNMENT and I would love to feature your story on my blog as it could definitely help people.

Just hit my shoutbox and it will email me, in case I'm not checking the boards.

Hey cool Will keep it in mind. Might take a bit awhile as I sent a pile of Purolator envelopes trying to get myself removed as Director

Calling my Lawyer to get this resolved.

They are a bunch of idiots. I sold the place and it is coming back to haunt me. Haven't ownned it since 2005. How can they do that??

YIKES Wendy! Hope to hear it sorted out. Sounds to me like the bank is passing the buck and using a legal loophole to try and get away with it.
  13. wenfri
Not the bank it is Revenue Canada Never thought I would ever have to try and buck the Gov't.
