It's an international news item: Lee Redmond, world record holder for the longest fingernails, broke her nails in a 4-vehicle accident!

(Read (far from) all about it! - World's Longest Nails Cracked in Crash apatheticlemming.blogspot.com/2009/02/worlds-longest-nails-cracked-in-crash... )

Seriously? She's hospitalized, with non-life-threatening injuries, as far as I can tell. Good news.

Even a Melbourne, Australia, newspaper covered Lee Redmond's accident. Impressive, considering the burning issues 'down under' just now.

To make this a discussion:

1) Has anyone heard who has the longest nails now?

2) Is this news

a) silly?

b) Tragic?

c) Distracting attention from the overwhelmingly vital matter of [fill in the blank]?

d) A plot by the lizard people ( anotherwaronterrorblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/lebanon-israel-pakistan-india-a... ) who run the world?

e) None of the above?

I think quite a few bloggers are posting about this story: for a variety of reasons.

I have no idea why Lee Redmond has maintained her nails that way - but there's going to be quite a bit of speculation.

I blogged about it because she doesn't wear a seat belt.

      Bingo. Good point.

A much-beloved coach in Minnesota died in a one-vehicle rollover some time back. The vehicle, judging from photos, was virtually undamaged. He'd been shaken, not stirred, like an ice cube in a martini.

And, he hadn't been wearing belts.

      Very much not wise.

      Again, good point.

I firmly believe that authorities will find that whoever caused the accident is related to or has been paid by the person with the second-longest fingernails.

I would hope that the media covered this story to provide a little light relief in the face of such a dreadful week, telling a tale of someone who wasn't badly hurt and didn't lose everything she owned.

      Now there's a conspiracy theory!

Maybe that second-longest person is one of the lizard people.

About your second paragraph: I think you've hit the nail on the head. I remember the 'serious sixties' and seventies: and learned that it's healthy to lighten up now and again.

I want to know how does she bathe with them long fingernails? GROSS
Forget I asked, I don't think I want to know.

I think wiping or even scratching are more serious issues.
