Now scientists are planning for trip to red planet and going to make it green. Meanwhile they are doing nothing to stop global warming. Is it not seems illogical? We are wrecking havoc on our own green planet and planning to make inhabitable planet green? Very sad!

    Just out of curiosity, where do you get your information?

    That's stunning.

      You're saying "that's stunning" in reply to your own post? Are you having problems with your short term memory?

      In any event, I'll rephrase the question for you - "Is it not a paradox that scientists are planning to go to Mars and terraform it, when we are not doing anything to repair the earth?"

      The answer is that science pushes in many directions at once. This is normal, and not to be discouraged.

      Have a nice day.

    How do you terraform a planet? Someone has been watching Star Trek a little too much...

      To be fair, they are *thinking* about how it could be done; I saw a scheme whereby they'd place solar mirrors in a geostationary position above Mars' ice caps; the resulting water would be used to start an oxygen cycle.

      But it is a very long way off.

      Interesting. But how would they deal with the much higher temperatures on Mars not evaporating all the water pretty much instantly before any kind of plant life can take hold to stabilize an atmosphere?

      I like the Star Trek version where Spock can be brought back to life through a giant explosion that instantaneously turns a barren planet into a lush tropical Eden.

      @Still

      Like I said, they're still working on it. However, it is an idea that they're thinking about. I like the Star Trek version as well...but if you recall, Genesis exploded due to being unstable.

      Sorry, is that my sci fi geek showing?

      But if you turn on the Genesis Machine, Spock will come back to life!
    5. greencurmudgeon
      @gtally

      That's only if you ensure he mind melded with Dr. McCoy before getting irradiated. Also, his body has to not burn up on entry into the atmosphere.

      Tall, tall order.

      And don't forget that Jim from "Taxi" has to be a Klingon.

      @gtally

      That would be Christopher Lloyd.
    8. gtally
      D'oh! I know. That's the joke. That and that you need a flux capacitor of 1.21 gigawats to power the Genesis Machine!
    9. Stillthinking
      Star Trek only burns things upon reentry into the atmosphere when it creates dramatic tension. Like when they returned the whales to San Francisco bay. But when alternate reality Kirk and alternate reality Sulu had to dive into the atmosphere from a platform in space, burning up in the atmosphere wasn't an issue.

      Duh! Everyone knows space lycra doesn't burn.

    I've no problem. And you have said there is no problem why? We are reading news about global warming and you can see it in your surroundings. This doesn't suggest we are going to face a big hazard. And the way you have told about terraforming planet it is still in science fiction.
