Guns and Mexico

Many of my still pot smoking friends are up in arms that we need more restrictions on guns because many of the guns used by Mexican gangs and drug lords come from the U.S. When I point out that the guns are paid for by the pot they are smoking they change topics quickly.

If you smoke pot, are you willing to quit to stop funding the voilence south of the border?

Dunno about Mexico but there is certainly a worlwide push to restrict weapon usage amongst law abiding citizens, after ("opportune") killing sprees.

In addition to a centralised federal weapons register, officials want "biometric security" barriers for gun vaults and technology that would limit the use of pistols and revolvers to their owners.

    Interesting question there Xmarks,

And no, I doubt that there are any pot heads that are willing to quit, they just want the burden placed on someone else as usual.

It's much easier if someone else takes action. Then we can complain about it.

    ok ok I've bumped it.

In a democracy, citizen don't need weapons. The risk is when Democracy switched to Dictature : the first thing that Mussolini and Hitler did when they took power was to pass a law to forbid Guns to Citizens.

So in the Constitution, there should be the rule that if People - supposedly Sovereign ( this concept is very important for Modern Democracy see theelitethinker.blogspot.com/2009/04/liberty-equality-fraternity-where-does... ) - think they are no more in a Democracy, they have the right to have Guns and revolt against a despotic government.

      Happens every day!

They need guns to make sure the democracy does not become a dictatorship

edited: once it becomes a dictatorship, do you suggest the dictator will allow guns to be sold to a public in rebellion?

I'm noticing that this turned to an anti gun thread again. Not one word from the potsmokers as to their blame in the problem.

    What a surprise.

That depends on where the pot smokers are getting their pot.

Up here the pot is local grown, for the most part. Also, a lot - and I mean a lot of pot comes out of certain southern states as one of their main export items.

I don't smoke pot anymore, but when I did it was all local 100%.
    1. xmarks
That is only partically effective. Pot grown here would be shipped elsewhere if locals didn't buy it. So buying even local pot affects total supply and demand, raising prices for Mexico crimelord supplied pot.

The locally grown only works is if someone grows their own, does not sell and would not smoke unless they grew it themselves.

When I said "locally" I meant both home grown (in your backyard kind of thing) and domestically grown - which are shipped to various states.

Buy local - it keeps cartels at bay
    3. xmarks
Unfortunately the cartels are growing in the U.S. True it is mainly in the southern states but their reach is spreading daily.

Gives a greater arguement for growing your own and/or legalizing it
    4. Anok
      Yes it does.

Besides, it grows naturally here - I mean...it would be like criminalizing dandelions for goodness sake.
    5. xmarks
I wouldn't kill the dandelions in my yard if they gave me a good buzz.
    6. Anok
I encourage the dandelions in my yard.

The leaves taste like spinach, only they're healthier, and the roots are great for all manner of things (from spices to medical remedies).

I would also encourage the cannabis in my yard if I had any

My kids just like the pretty flowers and blowing the seeds all over. We go on dandelion hunts throughout then neighborhood.
