Just finished watching the Sex & the City movie, which I vaguely remember thinking was a let down before because it wass so fluffy.

Have done an about turn - maybe it's the lack of booze!

Sometimes unhappy endings are essential. 24 is brilliant because there is no loyalty to any character. Anyone can be killed off or tortured anytime. That's part of why it is so compelling. But happy endings - whether essential or not - are still enjoyable. Aren't they?

I don't know. I tend to favor realistic endings in my writing which are usually a mix of happy and sad.

I think the ending must fit the story, if you know what I mean. The Princess Bride has a happy ending because it is that kind of feel good story, and an unhappy ending would have just marred the whole affair. On the other hand, you have something like... well, I can't think of a specific example right now, but there are stories that perhaps wouldn't be as powerful (in terms of the message that can be gleaned from them) if they had a light and fluffy ending. So, yeah, the story and intent need to dictate the ending, methinks.

All kinds of stories, all kinds of endings. Happy, sad, tragic, pessimistic, hopeful, triumphant. Hamlet wouldn't work with a happy ending; As You Like It wouldn't work with a sad one.

You put it much more succintly than I did.

"I'll never let go, Jack! I'll never let--"
"Rose! Dammit, Rose! Can't you see I'm trying to sleep here?"
"Oh, okay. Sorry ... oh, look! There's a boat!"

It would have been happier for me if the fat annoying chick died, and the cute girly-boy liv...oh, wait, nevermind.

Not All The Stories Begin With "Once Upon A Time...", Neither All Of Those End With "...And They Lived Happily, Ever After!"

Must Have Heard A Song By Byrds "Turn, Turn, Turn"!? NO? Hear It Then, In Case.
They Say It Right When... "To Everything Turn Turn Turn, There Is A Season Turn Turn Turn, And A Time To Every Purpose, Under Heaven..."

    Yep! A Time.

I prefer happy endings. Real life doesn't often work that way, so I'd rather watch movies or read books that do. Otherwise, I'd just watch the news and read all the fights on message boards. LOLOL

In books and movies, for whatever reason, I prefer sad/tragic endings..
In life I prefer the happy ending.

Well over here @ bc I'm not allowed to believe in happy endings, but over @ twitter there is a happy ending with every tweet.

lol! yes - everyone gets on so much better on Twitter. Why is that?

I don't have a preference, it really depends, and I am okay with ambiguity.

    You know...

When I first read this post - I kept thinking of Dave Chappelle's request to Oprah:

"Hey Babe, Can I get a Happy Ending?"

(as he was getting massaged by a beautiful woman)....

I don'r mind happy endings but sometimes it's unrealistic to expect every story to end with a happy ever after.

lol - the cinema i was in didn't have a garden...

Agreed. As has been pointed out, Titanic was never going to end well...
    1. Floormodel
I'll admit I never made it to the second half of Titanic. I decided that picking snails off my garden plants sounded much more fun and wandered off.
