Is it me or is authentic "PUMPKIN" very hard to find these days?

Yes there is a lot of butternut squash and other variety of squash around but Pumpkin,
"REAL PUMPKIN" is very hard to find in your local supermarket.

What other fruits, vegetables and spices are you having a problem finding at your local supermarkets?

What other cooking aids do you find hard to find and purchase at your local supermarkets period?

We can only get pumpkins around Halloween and that's it. Even the farm stands shut down. Some donate their unsold pumpkins to farms and zoos because some animals like them.

When I moved from CA to PA, I found I could no longer buy certain veggies individually. I had to buy big packs. Very frustrating when you only want one big carrot and not a whole bunch. Some stores only sell potatos in big bags. I have since found stores that sell veggies individually.

I do have trouble finding "Asian" type veggies here like snow peas. We have since gotten an Korean grocery store and it's HUGE!!! I am happy now.

Yes glad you brought this up, the Korean, Chinese and Japanese markets do seem to have stuff that you can't usually get at your local supermarkets.
Shitake mushrooms, Miso noodles, bonito flakes, mirin (japanese white wine)
are all hard to find in a regular supermarket unless you go into Chinatown or a korean, chinese, japanese market. You may find somethings online too.

Just about everything as I live in the middle of nowhere but specifically aubergines (eggplants) and biscotti.

For me to find biscotti, I have to go into the Italian bakery section of Boston
(the north end). There I can find some really good biscotti and other find baked breads, cookies and stuff in jars from Italy like stuffed olives or red bell peppers.

We make our own biscotti - when we want it that is
    3. Jeunelle
@Sam1982....You are awesome if you can make your own.

Now that you bring it up what I do like to make is fresh baked bread, especially wheat bread. The smell of wheat bread is absolutely delicious and I love to bake it just for the smell. Sometimes I don't even get to eat it but I love to bake it for the smell.

I also like the smell of coffee but I don't drink coffee. I prefer tea.
I purchased a coffee maker just to have the smell on Sunday morning when I'm home. Yes I know it sounds weird.

Its actually quite a slow process making it, which is why we dont bother too often.

Coffee on the other hand - cant go past a toffee/rum blend or a butterscotch blend
    5. Jeunelle
"toffee/rum blend or a butterscotch blend"
OMG I am coming over your house, save some biscotti for me.
    6. Sam1982
We'll make a coffee drinker out of you yet.
    7. Jeunelle
Nah Aah, that stuff taste like dirt water.
    8. Sam1982
You should try drinking a latte then, its mostly milk
    9. Jeunelle
Milk does a number on me, I don't drink milk, not even the lactose free milks.
If I drank milk, I'll end up on Jupiter.
    10. Sam1982
Ok well in that case we're not gonna make a coffee drinker out of you after all
    11. Jeunelle
      Nope many have tried

I have a couple biscotti recipes that areeasier to make. I only make it two or three times a year though. A local grocery chain, Wegmans, makes a decent biscotti for the rest of the time.

Most of the things I have trouble finding are vegetables and luckily my friend'shusband is head chef at a local restaurant so he helps me find them. Fresh pumpkin is easier to find but only during certain times of the year.
    13. Jeunelle
Yes same here luckily we have the north end of Boston and that is where all the Italian bakeries are and you can find some great biscotti's there.

Yes the pumpkin episode it seems may depend on your location because we only get it around halloween here in boston and it's still very scarce to find even on and around halloween.

You are lucky to have a chef around cause they are great at finding hard to find stuff.
    14. Floormodel
and he smokes a mean brisket too. We have a deal I get invited to all their bbqs and they get two Christmas cookie platters instead of one every year.
    15. Jeunelle
That's it my next boyfriend will have to be a chef.
      I'll accept no less
    16. Sam1982
You may want to consider an ex-chef instead. Unless he's super passionate about food he may not want to think about cooking when he gets home.
    17. Jeunelle
      teeheehee I sure hope not

I love snow peas and snap peas and it's sometimes hard to find them unless they're in season. Sometimes I can find them in the Chinese/Asian markets.
I love to steam them with white rice and mix in some pine nuts....hmmmm delicious.
    1. Sam1982
They're sooooo expensive though, well they are here at least. I tried growing my own but they didnt take off.
Snow pea shoots are sold here all year round, they come in little punnets like alfalfa sprouts
    2. Jeunelle
YES they are expensive even those pine nuts are expensive but when I feel for a treat boy do I and spare no expense. I wish they grew year round here in Boston too.
I can always get the frozen ones but I prefer my vegetables fresh and not frozen.

Been on a fruit-vegetable fast now for 20 years, so nothing to say on this topic. Just want to commend you for actually engaging in discussions. Rare thing-I'm finding out.
    1. Jeunelle
Wow a fruit and vegetable diet for 20 years????
Good God man don't tell me that is all that you've eaten for 20 years.
How are you holding up? Is the diet coming along?
I would hope it would for 20 years now, Good God

Lotus root. Very healing for the lungs, and delicious in stir-frys, etc. The only place to find it here is in Chinatown or certain Asian markets.
    1. Jeunelle
I have seen it only once here in the Asian markets and when I went back the next day to pick some up, they were all gone. DAMN
Well I'll look for them again on my next trip out to the Asian market.
Must be good if they were all gone.

Ever heard of magic fruit and flavor tripping parties?

    www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/dining/28flavor.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Apparently it reverses the polarity of your taste buds and makes sour things taste sweet and sweet things taste sour.
    1. Jeunelle
Wow now that sounds very interesting.
I doubt I would try it as it is messing with the mind but good to know it's available.

I know it sounds random but ive been looking for some durian lately. Its supposed to smell absolutely awful but ive been itching to try it. As i side note i tried my first cherimoya and it was pretty awesome.
    1. Jeunelle
Durian is a most stinky but many people do like it
Good luck on your search, I haven't seen Durian around here in Boston either.
  8. Jeunelle
Sorrel I use to be able to find to make that awesome sorrel drink out of
but its real hard to find lately. You might get lucky in the caribbean markets

Rosehips seems hard to find too and I love to make drinks out of them.
Heck they taste good in coolaid or country time lemonade in the summer.
    1. Jeunelle
Even hibiscus flowers is hard to find when you want to make some drinks
and salads, they even taste good if added to chocolate muffins, especially rose petals.

You are 100% right. I solved that problem planting my market around my house. In addition to my vegetable garden, in this period, I pick up edible weeds.

Your blog looks like a great read but please place one of those Google translators on the site, you will find you have more global visitors from other countries when you do this one small thing. Now I got to find a way to translate it when I have more time.
I have one on my site and you can see for yourself the global traffic coming in from my feedjit widgets. A vegetable garden is a great idea. www.JeunelleFoster.com

      Done !
    3. Jeunelle
Ah Ha now I can read it, thank you, you did a good thing today.
Love wild asparagus and wild garlic sure has a special taste of it's own from regular garlic. Looks like you got the solution there with your own garden, nice going.
