Harry Potter has always been dark... Sorry, but I don't know about witches, sorcery and wizardry. Thats all the stuff God told us to stay aways from... Yet CHRISTIANS are the main supports of the movies and books... WEIRD

Don't get me started on that subject.

Georgia, I've been thinking about this for a few minutes and considering different possible responses to what you've said here, but I'm going to go with: That's just silly.

Yes - Stay away from Chocolate Frogs, Quiditch and Pumpkin Beer.

      EEEEVVVIIIIILLLLLLLLLL!!! lol

      Sorry

      I will be struck down.

Ehh, staying away from the Quidditch I might have to agree with. Take a few too many bludgers to the face and you'll be warning everyone how evil it is too.

Good point Georgia. I know, one time I read a story about unicorns. And I watched disney's fantasia which I'm pretty sure had a sorcerer in it. So yeah I know I'm going to hell. Because Fantasy is a sin. ::head explodes::

      People are stupid.

Could that be because the Harry Potter stories are really just about the timeless battle between good and evil mixed with a healthy dash of youthful alienation?

I guess that would be too simple.
    1. Dukepro25
Personally - I'd rather it be dark than all sprinkled with sugar.

If yah know what I mean.

I've pretty much grown up with Harry Potter and it's been interesting to see it go from all sweet and innocent to all dark and evil. lol

      Love it!

I thought that the fifth book was very dark. It was something of a stretch to see Harry as the good guy in that one (though the reason for that later became clear). I didn't think that trend continued with 6 and 7, though.
  4. georgiagetaways
good witch, bad witch... good magic practicing wizard who believes in god. yeah, probably that simple.

MadameX.. as a staunch Catholic I am surprised you actually read the series.
    1. MadameX
Read every one with my daughter and she owns all of the movies, too. Like many other books and movies, they contained some things that bore talking through, but the pure fantasy nature of the magical creatures in the series (including witches and wizards) was not one of them. It always surprises me when Christians want to lump such tales (tales not so very different from those spun by Tolkein or Lewis) with the occult, and I think it badly blurs the real issue when that happens and undermines our ability to effectively point up real threats where they arise.

    I've read the whole series.

    Good series.

The last book was ok. It wasn't great, but it was awesome to see it come together finally. I think she was struggling to bring all the lose ends together.

I was tempted to read them all through again, but it seemed like such a huge undertaking.

    7 books?

    Yeesh!

Reading them one time was probably enough for me.

IDK if I'd be able to get through the first three any how.

They're to kidish for me now.

It's a series about DEATH. It opens with the boy's parents getting brutally murdered. How is it "getting" dark?
    1. Dukepro25
      lol

      Good point.

I'm going to stay far far away from the religious discussion of these books.

I loved the series and yes, it did get pretty dark but ultimately, it did not bother me enough to stop reading.

Is it bad that I like watching dark, action packed movies?

Does that make me a bad person? lol

My brother is throwing a fit over this new Twilight movie.

      He doesn't "approve" of vampires.

      Good or evil.

I'd say her problem isn't so much having upped the dark quotient as that a lot of it seems to be trying a bit too hard to be dark, and sacrificing the things that made her world interesting in order to do so.

I'll be honest--despite being a chronic rereader, I've only gone through the sixth and seventh once each. Rowling really lost me around book 5 or so, and her audience-baiting habit didn't exactly help....
    1. Dukepro25
      Audience-baiting?

      Please clarify...
  10. georgiagetaways
It's a personal choice... I don't care what you do, lol... I was just stating. See I just don't get it. There are too many discrepancies

I love all things Harry Potter, yes, they can get somewhat dark, but I think they need to be in order for it to fit the story. If they were all light and sunny, it would ruin much of the story.
    1. Dukepro25
      This is true.

      It followed a natural progression.

      Good point.
  12. Dukepro25
I kind of liked the earlier books when I was young.

She seemed to really catch that niche and give kids what they were really craving; that innocent fantasy world that they could really delve into.

However, if she had kept up the trend, I would of grown out of it, but because she has gotten increasingly darker, my interested in the movies seems to be peaked every time.

I have to wonder, if she had stayed with the, innocent children's fantasy world, if this series would of done as well.

    not dark enough.

The audience is growing up with the films. I think the level of "darkness" is just about right. It sets the tension for the films and the impending danger of "he who must not be named".

I'd say its just about right having read all the books.

Kids are far more sophisticated than what the rest of so-called adults think these days.

Remember kids do yoan with boring movies

Thanks for featuring me. I should say you are very fast. And I joined you too.

definately getting darker as the series progressed. Bit like Star Wars really.
    1. Dukepro25
      IDK

Star Wars is a whole 'nother topic.

      It uhhh...

      In my opinion...IDK

      No comment there. lol
  17. Anniepooh
I've read them all, my kids (who can read) have read them all and we've seen/own every movie so far. I do think there was a darkness there that dissipated a bit. I think that the story line called for it.

@georgia As for Christianity - well, we all know that Tolkien was a Christian and C.S. Lewis became a Christian, and their books are chock-full of wizardry and darkness that makes old Voldy look like small potatoes. If you would get out of your stuffed shirt and read the books instead of going on what everyone else is selling, you'll find that they end in a very surprising manner. Being informed always helps one to make a point.
  18. Radica1Faith
Its becoming dark, because the readers are growing up. Also the perils they face have to become more and more grave and serious. Or else there would be no point in making a new book, it'd be anti-climatic.
  19. Mithya
The book is not dark at all for me. I dont know, maybe I read more horrible dark-death story than HP. But the movie is definitely getting darker and darker (including the lighting, hehehe). But it's always fun to see a different version of a book in a movie. Especially if J.K Rowling doesnt seem to protest anything about it, than it might be just exactly what she had in mind when she wrote the book. Only because people are already sayin it a children book, she couldnt do anything but follow the market.

I think the series definitely starts to "mature" and as the subject matter gets more well, serious it gets darker because. It had to, though - you couldn't live in his wonderment a being a wizard for the entire series!

I think re reading them all is a worthy undertaking. I might just do that
    1. Dukepro25
      Mature

      Good word choice.

What kind of a book would it be any ways without violence and death?
