Now, I am shamelessly promoting the post I put on my own blog, but truth be told, this is all over the internet. I found it on Digg....you can follow the links to digg it, read the original and watch the video.
It is FUNNY.
Sad, but funny....

I disagree. I spent years working for my father (He's a tax preparer) listening to so many people complain that the feds take their money. But they all enjoy the benefits, social security, medicaid, etc.
There are a lot of loopholes. If you feel like you are taking a stiff one, you probably need a different tax preparer.
No offense Anok, I just don't agree with you on this one. -
OK, but come April 15th 09, don't file your income taxes.
See what happens.
"voluntary" has nothing to do with whether or not those taxes are used for something that may or may not benefit you. Voluntary is when a person has a choice to pay or not.
We do not have a choice. You MUST fill out tax paperwork for every employer you work for - or you and teh employer will go to jail. You employer MUST withhold an appropriate amount from every paycheck, as well as pay the businesses portion of income taxes - or the employer will go to jail. Edit: If the employer does not withhold your taxes you MUST file as an independent contractor, and pay the entirety of it yourself.
You MUST report your income to the IRS, or you get fines, or go to jail, and you MUST give up a percentage of your money, or you go to jail.
That is not voluntary. Not even close. -
I agree that was a poor choice of words. As an employer I am bombarded with paperwork that I often times do not fill out. I have had may run-ins with federal, state and local tax collectors and have never been to jail.
The penalties are stiff and I should be better at doing the paperwork for my corporation. But I chose to incorporate so I guess, in that respect, it was voluntary. -
You didn't go to jail because you cooperated. you paid the taxes, and did the paperwork.
The penalty for making a mistake, having an oversight, or being flighty is stiff - in fees and penalty charges. But if, the employee and employer told the IRS to stick their tax collection where the sun don't shine you will go to jail. Actually, you will pay all the taxes, have your property seized, or put on lien, have your assets frozen until the debt is paid AND you'll go to jail.
The entire point the interviewer was making was that we do not have a voluntary tax system. The tax collection and taxation of citizens and companies is done so by threat of force, and then legal force, if teh trheat is not heeded. -
Again, my first line was "I agree that was a poor choice of words". The system is not voluntary.
The interview is funny as Reid tries to backpedal. I just don't have a problem with paying taxes.
The system should be voluntary, if you don't want to pay taxes, give up all of your rights and be done. Don't call 911 in an emergency, if you become disabled - too bad, if you get old you're on your own, don't drive on any roads paid for by the Gov, etc, etc. -
Oh I don't have a problem with taxes either. I just have a problem with people telling me that I am volunteering my tax money
Although my proposal is that citizens get to check off boxes for programs they would like their tax dollars to go to, instead of sending it off to whatever programs the government dictates.
