Has anybody ever bought a cow (freezer beef?)

There is nothing I love more than beef. Ah – I know all about the red meat thing and I don’t want to hear it.
Anyways, I have a friend that buys the whole cow with two or three others and has it butchered.
Not long ago I got ripped off by those guys in the freezer trucks that try to sell you the good deals. Ripped off might be overstating it. But the portions were small and the quality was not great. But it got me thinking about buying bulk.
It looks like you don’t save a whole lot but if you buy from a responsible rancher you get a better quality product. Plus they say grazing cattle is much healthier for you. Does anybody have experience buying like that?

Not exactly but a woman I used to work with raised cattle. The firm would buy a cattle and let the employees share the meat to take home. It was pretty cool because we all got to stock up for awhile.
My SIL's uncle raised buffalo. He gave us some a few times. BTW, if you have never had buffalo, it is incredible! -
Yes... my family would do this often... both with pigs and cows... but we were country folk and that's what a lot of people do outside the big cities. We also raised a lot of our own meat... every kind imaginable... except platypus... and would name our steers Sir Loin to always remind ourselves that certain of them were doomed to become table meat, and not get too attached to them.... but we treated all of our animals with utmost respect and compassion... one of the reasons i became vegetarian after moving to the city... you don't really know much... and frankly most ppl don't want to know... how those packages of meat are treated before they are killed.
Yes... you can definitely save money by buying a quarter or half a steer... and if raised properly, AND butchered properly, you'll very likely have ridiculously good steaks which you pay top dollar for in a restaurant or grocery. However, even with all the controls in place to create a good tasting, well-marbled, tender steer... it's not a guarantee. Always taking a little bit of a risk. -
Always take a calculator when buying in bulk. Some of those deals offered by costco end up costing more per lb than what you could byuy it for at the grocery store full price. Ranchers do the same deal they give only a small amount of the prime meats and the rest in cheaper cuts.. Just like anything involving money you have to be smart about it

When I was a kid, my parents join this program, where you got the beef cut up as you liked it, and they supplied the freezer for you to store it, but you had to at least half a cow on every order. So when the beef started to back up and we had to start giving it away, the cow and the freezer went right out the window.
