Has anyone here been to a life coach?

I've researched the life coaching 'profession' and I realize some are accredited and respectable. I've never used one yet myself.
I don't personally know anyone who has used one....anyone want to share their experience?

It's a fancy way of saying "Jerk that will take advantage of you and steal all your money".
Counsellors actually have some form of education and professional training (taking an online course is not professional training), while life coaches are random Joes (or Janes) who used to be janitors; then one day decided that their opinion was so important that they wanted, no - they HAD to guide other peoples lives.
And there are actually people who can't make a single decision without asking their coach.
"Oh I don't know if I should have chicken or fish today!"
"Fish is rich on vitamin and protein, you should go for that"
"Oh thank you mister coach, what would I do without you!"
Get some freaking help.
That's my opinion anyway.

However what?
Google "become a life coach". Any random baboon who's able to read can become a life coach. If you need counselling - seek out someone who actually has a degree and knows how the human mind works.
Granted, if Bill Gates or Kjell Inge Røkke were to tell me how to create a successful business - I would listen. But I won't listen to Joe Janitor.
I think I will become a life coach. I'll be filthy rich.
I wonder if some (most?) of the people who use life coaches are actually suffering from dependent personality disorder. If Joe Janitor had a degree, he would know and he would treat them.

A life coach if i understand right, will give your life clarity and direction when you feel confused and bewildered...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coaching (if you're a fan of wikipedia)-
Life Coaching does not dwell on the past, it looks to the future with a belief that we all have the resources within ourselves to realize our wildest dreams.
We can talk in these areas -
Career Progression & Career Change
Work/Life Balance
Stress Management
Fulfilling Untapped Potential
Setting & Achieving Goals
Removing Fears Such As Public Speaking -

I have a hard time arguing with you about Dr. Phil... but he is an 'educated man'
On the other hand, my Uncle never went to college, and while still a very young man, was in a motorcycle accident that left him in a wheelchair to this day... yet he managed to start a very successful business in a small town.
I agree with your earlier point that we need to pay close attention to the skills/abilities (not to mention personality traits) of who we are taking our advice from... but I don't agree that because someone uses the term 'life coach', that they have nothing to offer.
I have seen the charlatans you are speaking about... and I have studied people who have brilliant processes that help quite a few people.
That will be $100.00
You're welcome!

I've been to a coach some time ago and strangely enough have almost just written a blog piece on it (I'm taking the liberty to put in the url - I'm not advertising: www.svelmoe.dk/post/2008/06/My-experience-with-coaching.aspx )
It was technical more a profession coach, but those things overlap and well - I doubt my experiences would change.
Needless to say I'm not impressed by such people. -
As a professional certified coach I'm fully aware that the public perception of coaching is mixed. There are many life coaching critics out there. Many of them have never experienced a life coaching session with a qualified and certified coach, so you should not pay too much attention to their opinions.
Many of them are often the same people who like to grumble and groan about everything else in life, and rather dwell in negativity than create new possibilities.
When people hear the words life coach or personal coach, they often think I'm supposed to be some kind of all-knowing, all-wise guru, having all the life skills and answers to people's problems. I'm not here as some kind of guru to tell you what to do or how to live your life. I believe that you are the expert on your life.
There is nothing magical or mysterious about the life coaching strategies, principles and tools I share with my coaching clients. However, the results are often life changing.
The best way to understand the true value and potential benefits of coaching is to experience it personally. Until you've had the experience of coaching, it will remain a concept in your mind.
I will offer anyone out there a free 45 minute coaching introduction session, you can find out for yourself what coaching is all about ...

My mom is a holistic health counselor (deals with health food and psychology), but it is basically turning into a life coaching business. It is amazing how much the food you eat impacts your life. Some of her clients don't even need help with eating right, it is mostly all mental. Getting in the right mindset is the key, and my mom has done a good job of helping people.
