Hi from Dubai folks where Robert De Niro, Kylie, Shirley Bassey and Yasmin Lebon are packing up and leaving The Palm Atlantis after the most OTT launch party ever held.

Global recession anyone? This place HAS lost the plot, I'm convinced and am still recovering from a $30 million launch party where I witnessed firework display SEVEN times larger than the Olympics.

Video, clips and some questions to make you think at:

I ask you - what else could the $30 million have been spent on?

Do tell here or at flowers as we try to put this thing into perspective!

Cheers....

why they do not spend their money on humanity help?
    1. gosmelltheflowers
Thats one way of looking at it but where to start?

Actually they are helping lots, not all of them are wasting money of course, but some of them are dumb!

When they charge 20 Grand a night, you see where they get the drive from, besides spending money creates jobs, oppourtunies, letting money stagnate is the worst thing you can do

Perhaps but could it be moved onto better things?

Well at least people got to enjoy fireworks and a party, governments spend this kind of money all the time on wars, weapons, disasterous policies.

And they have lots of money with low population... that means this could not effect them at a bad way!!

A irrigation system would have been a good investment.

I am not a big fan of the Gulf, having lived in decadent Kuwait (immediately after living in struggling Iraq). But $30m is probably small change to some Emiratis and at least they shared the love (man) by throwing a party. Didn't you get an invite?
    1. gosmelltheflowers
Sure did but declined it and watched from an apartment rather than on the Palm!

I'll look you up next time I am passing, I usually stay down the Marina.

I am Egyptian, but I lived in Kuwait for so many years with my parents when I was a kid... and I totally agree with you!

I'll check you out then! Maybe early new year as I transit on my way to less decadent climes.

They should enjoy it while they can; with the drop in oil prices they'll be cleaning their own swimming pools by Christmas.

I'm not sure the revenue in UAE is entirely based on oil. Am I being a pedant?

UAE earns more on tourism than oil. Its one of the Gulf countries to earn the least from oil. Dubai has developed itself as a hub for entertainment and tourism in Asia.

Check out the ATLANTIS HOTEL at Palm Dubai.

That city is really keen in spending big. Everything seems so luxurious there.

I heard that their economy is starting to struggle a bit though...
