I always read a lot and that helped. But since getting back into writing, i think I've become a lot sharper and more 'in flow' with the writing skills.

How about you?

since getting back into writing, i think I've become a lot sharper and more 'in flow' with the writing skills.

That's pretty good for you, bug

I think I can safely say that since I started blogging back in early 2005 that I have more of an eye for things, topics, and situations that might be worthy of being blogged about or commented about.

Unfortunately, over the years .. probably my best work and insights ended up in conversations and comments on other people's blogs and forums, rather than on my own blog with the absence of me being able or wanting or trying to promote my blog a little more.
    1. lordiwanttobewhole
PetLvr....I agree with your last paragraph, at times I've commented on something other than my blog and wish I would have saved it for my blog!
    2. PetLvr
It's good for our social community profile though .. and I never minded it.

I always used to get peeved at other bloggers who would visit e.g. sites like Problogger then requote what Darren said on their own blog and link back to Problogger to get a trackback link .. and, even come back and say "I wrote about this on my blog (link)" ... when, the best content and learning information on Problogger is the initial insights by Darren and the general mass of bloggers coming by and offering their 2 cents and opinions and suggestions. It's those people's links I would surf click and visit, not the trackbacks.

It's the same here with people who see a topic, then go to their blog and write about the topic (or if we're lucky about the topic and actually have good insights about it) but make sure they have suitable keyword percentage strength, come and do a blog broadcast, then go to a topic thread and then post the link to promote the thread - well, that is until spammers came and it was easier to just delete all spam links including these type of response links. I know I will click your profile and go to your blog that way, than click on links to posts on your blog ... if you say something that gets my attention!

    No but my spelling has

I have always written good quality lecture notes, conference papers and journal articles, so I can't say that my writing has improved.

However the early blog posts took me HOURS to get the presentation right And even then, the images slipped and the text veered around. It was painful, pathetic and miserable

Now I have that largely sorted.

PetLvr and Lordiwanttobewhole... what does it matter if material is reused? After all, noone will see it twice except you and the person on whose blog you originally commented. The other 48523458209858912839219518 bloggers in the world won't know a thing.
    1. PetLvr
@Hels... It's not an issue of duplicate post or number of people who saw the first comment - since, it's original anyway (my own thoughts and insights) .. it's more of .. well, when I do offer my 2 cents - I go out all the way.

But if I blog about it - I would also have to blog about WHAT I was commenting about, or about the blogger's blog post (which I was always okay with linking out to my fellow bloggers) but it is a tiring process, and usually my responses are in response to the original article/question and others who commented - so, if I repeat on my blog what was discussed, and what I said .. I would also have to mention other people's point of views or possible solutions to make it a "great" blog post and, quite frankly - I'd rather do nothing than extra work at times

Listen here... why do u blog? If the answer is because I wanna.....then to hell with what other people think. Are you happy with what u wrote? Is the only question that needs to be answered...period end of story

I hope so. Not so much since I started to blog, but since I started writing online in 1998, I hope it has improved. I certainly hope that maturing has lead into more thought out articles and posts... Then again, I've been constantly writing in one form or another since I was 8, so I should hope a natural improvement has occurred...
  5. HollytheHousewife
Hell 2 the yea... still think its funny that people say caps is hollering. Now when I yell at somebody I tell em' "I'M TALKING TO YOU WITH ALL MY LETTERS. CAPITALIZED, Mr. or Missy" we have so much fun with it,haha

I'll say don't make me capitalize ur booty, young lady...
  6. lordiwanttobewhole
I have improved my writing. I look to bloggers that I admire and learn from them. I don't mean copy from them but learn from them

i always strive to improve and grow!

I think I was a much better writer years ago. Since delving into art institute, pieces of my intellectual brain have been scattered amongst the world, that's why I'm in Australia trying to find the pieces that made it here.

Seriously though, I hope to refine it over time and I'll keep working at it. I also look at others writings, their style and it tends to improve my own from time to time.
    1. stayfitbug
That last line is what happens with me, subconsciously.
  8. jeremyjanson
Yes, especially my expository writing and clean sentence level wit. I was always good at paragraph-level and description, but exposition and sentence construction were often weak points for me.
  9. stayfitbug
    Good... you improved. Personal improvement
  10. ThriftShopRomantic
Yes, to some extent. For my job, I've created a lot of business-related content quickly.

Blogging, I get to apply that to topics I enjoy, and I can add humor to them.

Doing this on the schedule I've set for myself has given me the chance to find out what works, what doesn't, and how to write clearly for a more casual audience.
  11. MadameX
I actually think it's gone the other way (depending, of course, on how you define "improved"). "Good web writing" and "good writing" aren't necessarily the same animal, and in addition to that distinction I'm much more careless in blogging. I've always been something of a "one draft, don't look back" writer, and blogging has definitely magnified that. It's only at work that I actually put time into crafting what I write, and even there, because our world is web-based and fast-paced, much is created on the fly.
    1. stayfitbug
Writing for the web is a different animal for sure.
  12. hatingtherain
No. I actually write a lot better with pen and paper. The Internet has turned me into a slob. I tend to just throw stuff up without much thought sometimes. I am trying to cut that out and improve though.
  13. Arcticulates
Sorta,, I think blogging has made me more aware of how others feel so I am not as descriptive as I used to be, so I hold back.. I really have no idea why...

I used to be able to make people laugh, cry or be in the moment I am writing about. I can's seem to do that anymore. Maybe because of a bloggers unspoken rule to make the posts short and sweet. I am think I am a person of many words, so short and sweet is hard for me and makes me draw a blank. lol!

I think I have improved somewhat on my grammar and punctuation.
    1. Hels
      Oh Articulates... why why why?

"Maybe because of a bloggers unspoken rule to make the posts short and sweet. I am think I am a person of many words, so short and sweet is hard for me and makes me draw a blank". I find short, stumpy posts soooo frustrating, especially if the edges of the text are squared off. I know it is a matter of personal taste, but my taste is for expansive, fully thought out posts, not snippets.

      Let your true writing flow!
    2. MadameX
I agree with you--I'm always disappointed when I click through to a post and only find a couple of hundred words. I feel like I've gone looking for a book and discovered that the jacket copy is all there is.
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
I have that same reaction. I enjoy going to posts that have a FEEL to them, that have a little weight and make it worth visiting.
  14. Friday13
    omg yes lolz
  15. celticmusicfan
I used to be careless with my spacing and my punctuations. Now I am very careful since well... I see my stuff on discussion boards. And yes spelling and facts are important.
    1. hatingtherain
      who needs facts?that's just silly!
    2. liggybee
That's a good thing. Writing that is poorly punctuated is very difficult to understand. Besides that, it makes you appear somewhat more intelligent. It annoys me to read something written by a doctorate degree holder who can't even spell at the high school level.
    3. celticmusicfan
You need it if you are writing interviews and reviews. The fans will kill you. It happened to me before.
  16. stayfitbug
I find myself typing properly in instant messenger convos. Before it was pure web slang and abbreviations.
  17. wehireu
Yes, it has gotten a lot better. Twitter has taught me a lot about being concise. Blogcatalog has taught me a lot about dialog. Forums have taught me a lot about how to be clear. Blogging has also improved my reading skills. If you review books, you learn a lot about books.
  18. liggybee
Not really. I used to be a creative writer for our campus paper. As a creative (features) writer, I didn't have to follow the standard writing rules that the news writers had to follow. So I'm so used of writing in my own style. I continue to write the way I speak and I continue to write exactly what I think.
  19. dfunzy
    Yes. I use fewer words.

Not mine but the readers of my blogs and comments
  22. geekchick
I've won several writing awards in the past, so I can't really say that my writing has improved. However, since I have a bliki, I have started thinking in a more wikified, interrelated manner and I think that has started to make a difference.
    1. stayfitbug
      Congrats on the awards!
    2. MadameX
So are you saying that you think your writing is as good as it could ever possibly get already?
  23. MissSuzie
I've always been bitchy and have never had a problem with writing or speaking my mind. If anything, my writing has received more attention since blogging.
    1. stayfitbug
Best way... Gotta stand out from the crowd.
    2. crazyTsu
.. and made yourself known to many more!
  24. nothingprofound
My writing hasn't changed, but I've changed. I'm always changing.
    1. stayfitbug
      Change is good
    2. Halconite
      Change liberates ...
  25. sudam08
Yes my writing has changed for the better. Constant writing has only made me more perfect in both style and grammar. This is a good development.
  26. BeamingBalance
I think so.... but more that I've fine-tuned my message.
    1. stayfitbug
The fine-tuning is the important part!!!
  27. carsonfb
I don't believe that my writing has improved, but I have definitely become more prolific.
    1. stayfitbug
More prolific = more attention/ more traffic
  28. scf
The quantity of my writing has definitely improved.
    1. stayfitbug
      Quality? More quantity of quality?
  29. NewsMeBack
I think yes. I use some words I forgot, write solid and learn to write better.
  30. scenexg
Since I've started my writing has gotten better a bit. Also, due to the nature of my blog I noticed I see more humor in things that we go through every day and most people don't find funny at all.
  31. sngirene
Yes sure. My writing improved alot. I start to enjoy writing and expressing my thoughts through words. I once hated writing reports but blogging helped me with better confidence and less resistance when faced with this task now.
  32. sngirene
As long as we change for the better, why stop and remains at status quo. Life is too precious to stay put. Move forward is still a better choice.
  33. stayfitbug
Blogging will take over the world
    1. scenexg
The takeover has begun! *evil laugh evil laugh sneeze*
  34. SaNn
I think my writing improved a bit since blogging
    1. stayfitbug
      Good :-).
  35. petchatter
Thanks to Mrs. Hay in the sixth grade (bless her), I've always been conscious of good writing. However, Blogging has helped me to be more concise and certainly more thoughtful. Even so, it's hard to write a post of less than 500 words.
