I left a corporate (slavery) job in 1999 and spent 18 months traveling... partly through Europe, but spent most of the time criss-crossing America. I did use my car, but there was a lot of "back-packing" involved in various outdoorsy areas.

National Parks, Native Reservations, big cities, small towns, I tried to leave myself open to every experience... spent time visiting friends, touring museums, hiking, white-water rafting, partying, trying new foods in every spot, working on a shrimp boat for a short time (seriously!), and ended with watching a Shuttle Launch in Florida.

Hopping from culture to culture was awesome! Really cleansed and de-toxed my soul after being abused by a corporate giant for nearly a decade. I wish everyone could do it when they experience severe job burnout. It might prevent a lot of nervous breakdowns, LOL...

And you can!! Just get laid off!!!
In all seriousness spending time with yourself is good for you, and traveling and spending time with other cultures is also very good for you.
Being laid off gave me the time to cleanse myself. Spending 5 years in Germany when I was in the Air Force helped me get a different world perspective. I spent a lot of time in different countries and their people. The world would be a better place if we could all spend time in another culture.
