If you don't feel the effect of recession in your daily life, then consider yourself very lucky.
"A record 32.2 million people -- one in every 10 Americans -- received food stamps at the latest count, the government said on Thursday, a reflection of the recession now in its 16th month.

Stillthinking,
According to the article, there's an income limit of $19k+ for a family of three to receive the food stamps. -

I have used them. They are a lot easier to use now than how they used to be. Now you just get a credit card and each month so much money is loaded onto the card. It can only be used for food items but you just swipe it like a credit card until the money is gone for the month. It's easy to apply for it, just go to your local Job and Family Services in your county! Here in Ohio if u are not working then you are required to go to a "job find" program where you are taught how to make a resume and how to talk to potential employees about getting a job with them.

I applied once for food stamps years ago. But I was laughed out of the place because the social worker couldn't qualify one who wasn't clearly male or female. I never went back. Seriously.

Yes I found a $20 food stamp once on my way home from school (7th grade) and you can bet I went to the supermarket right away and bought as much junk food $20 can buy.

Still thinking,
If you are collecting unemployment benefits in most states and had a fairly well paying job so you are up pretty high on the benefit ladder, you probably are making too much to qualify for food stamps. (the exact income and resource limits vary somewhat from state to state) If you continue to be unemployed after your benefits have run out, then you should definitely apply. Imho, there is no shame whatsoever on using these benefits if you qualify for them. I should probably apply myself since I am very low income. -
Husband out of work 6 months. Used to be well off. Can't survive in our old way of life with just my income and unemployment. Still have another say 6 months before we worry about keeping the house and need that type of assistance. I feel like as long as I have two pennies to rub together it is our responsibility to not use the help.
