I had a post on those on MoneyMoose.

I'm offering my own carbon offset program - you pay money for me to stay at home and not use cars, planes, or anything. My sedentary-ness will offset whatever you do.

Overall I think it's just... well... I mean, why? I guess it's like donating to charity, so perhaps it is justified.

I went to moneymoose.com/ to read the abovementioned posting but had trouble finding it...

Could you please post a link to this post so those people interested in it such as myself can access it easier...

Could you perhaps re-phrase your commment in such a manner to get it by the editors so those of us who are interested will be able to respond to it...

I haven't bought any that I'm aware of. The idea is good, but isn't the industry unregulated?

How is the idea good? If you're a rich hypocrite who cries about global warming but have mansions that use huge amounts of electricity and gas/oil, but you can pay to plant 100 trees, suddenly, you're innocent? Is that really a good idea?

It's a very unclever attempt at wealth redistribution.

It's NOT a good idea. But it's a better idea than being a rich hypocrite who cries about global warning but [has] mansions that use huge amounts of electricity and gas/oil--which is what we've got now.

I think it is a great idea that has a lot of potential to help battle global warming and pollution...

The challenge is the implementation...It is important if at the very least the contributions are actually used for some ecological improvements...

Currently bonafide charities that offer allowable tax exemptions in many countries are allowed in many of those countries by law to use up to 75 per cent of what they collect for their cost of doing business and only 25 per cent of the money they collect actually reaches the people or cause they are supposed to be helping...

If the same regulatory practices used for charities are used for carbon offsets it will just become another industry like the charities and very little good will come of this...

What if one million internet users agreed to pay a 1 dollar per month carbon offset donation and the first month one million trees were planted...the second month perhaps one million dollars could be used to eliminate pollution in a few places etc. etc.

    BIGGEST SCAM EVER

Interesting how the people who have only bad things to say about it don't explain themselves.

While ideally we would all cut back on our carbon emissions, some of us don't have any choice but to fly, for example. And what about those of us using coal-produced electricity or eating beef? Hard to avoid producing carbon. So what's wrong if someone want's to voluntarily contribute to a project that will help absorb the carbon one is producing? That need not be a scam in general. The only problem I see, as I mentioned above, is that the industry is unregulated. That is an open invitation to scammers.
