Have you ever tried your hand at gambling or Casino games? What was your experience like? Did you win or lose?

Exactly what my perception is about gambling or betting etc....The addiction and the vicious circle it creates.....
But I want to know whether you consider it just a game of luck, chance or do you think one can actually win if played intelligently. -

@ Rich
Thanks...that's exactly what I wanted to know...You can play smart in it. In my blog I wrote about the aspect of probability as well.-
You're welcome. Yeah, I just read your post and it's pretty smart. Without going into the math portion, it's solid.
For the series, I would take $80. (Play machines that recently had high cash outs if I could find them). If the machine didn't hit anything within the first $10, I'd move to the next. (Slot machines run in cycles.) I'd play until the $80 was gone.
However, if I had any wins, let's say $200, I would pocket the $120, and play with the remaining $80 winnings just as I did above. Where your post is perfect is that you cannot let yourself get sucked in.

No desire, worked as a croupier in England for a couple of years and loved dealing blackjack and roulette, but not gambling.

@ jafabrit,
Not really sure I understand the things you mentioned here, but was it somewhat like betting? Did you generally win or lose?
My emphasis here is whether it is completely about luck and chance or can we actually increase our chances by playing smartly? -
I have a real aversion to fruit machines and only ever visited one Casino, which featured rows and rows of them. It worries me that people can while away hours and hours on these things when there are constructive things to be done.
I'll have an occasional bet at the races but that's all. -
My husband keeps a budget and sets aside a certain amount of money each month for entertainment. At the end of the month, whatever is left in that budget account we take to the casino. If we lose the money, no more casino until the end of next month. So far this month he has won R3400 and that, combined with what he won last month (R1200) and my winnings (R430), is enough to buy the Yorkie puppy I have been wanting for years.
He plays blackjack, I play the slots.
It is self-limiting...we have a specific limit as to what we can spend at the games and when it is gone, we are done for the month. Sometimes we lose it all, but most times we either break even or make a little. -
I love to gamble.
I'm a big fan of the craps table. I love to roll them dice.
Makes my heart beat fast just thinking about it. -
The house always wins.
Unless....you go in just to play for fun, and follow this basic rule:
Plan to gamble a certain amount of money, and only that amount. If it's $10, than that's it, you play the same $10 until you lose $10, and then you go home.
You play your $10, if you lose it, you go home. If you win something with it, you pocket the winnings, and play your $10 again. If you lose that $10, you go home. If not, pocket your winnings, and play the same $10 again. So on and so forth until you lose your $10 (and you will lose it).-
Yes, that's exactly right. If you gamble, you will lose money, so it's best to treat the specific amount of money like you would any expendable amount of cash - when it's gone, the fun is over. And just think of it like you had paid for a show, or dinner or drinks at the bar.
That way, you lose the money but you didn't "lose" in any real sense, and you aren't tempted to put up more than you can reasonably gamble.

So Anok, did you write this from your own experience? And do you gamble or bet or play such games from time to time?
-
No wonder you answered with such authority and something that made a lot of sense! It runs in the family after all

I tried my hand at www.paddypowertrader.com spread betting. I started with the demo account they have...man that stuff is not easy. They start you off with $10,000 in virtual money (not real money). I wouldn't use real money unless you're good at stock market betting.

Though I m not a gambler, I think there are some games that you can win with your intelligence.Roulette for instance. There is a brain game in it. If you learn the tricks most of the time you can win.(unfortunately it is illegal in our country India, otherwise I would have played and earned considerably.
