So I just adopted a dog a 3 year old border terrier from a humane soceity. They called him argyle there, but i can't imagine keeping that name so i'm looking for a new one. He's grizzle and tan and incredibly playful and energetic.

My current favorite is Nixon.

You know .. i think that would cute ... going around the neighborhood at night looking for your dog and shouting..

    AAAaaaaAaaaaarrrrrggg!!
  2. Anok
Just a question, does he respond to the name they've given him? If so, changing his name right away might prove confusing for the dog.

Perhaps a variation of argyle? Like gyle (pronounced like "whiley").

He doesn't respond the name they gave him, and i can't imagine keeping it.
    2. Anok
In that case, the sky is the limit
    3. educatedvagabond
That makes sense. They either didn't have him for long or they just gave him a name to have something to call him. As opposed to, you know, "you" or "hey there."

    Stinker?

Imagine calling him to come in the house "come on stinker...stinker get in here!"
  4. busylizzy
Nixon just makes me think of a president with a funny nose who made peace signs!

Giley, short for Argyle is good idea, Anok! Pets hear the vowels sounds, not the consonants so that's a good name!
    1. Anok
Yup, they also respond better to two syllables.

    Mr Woofers.

    or "Cat."

I love border collies--my family has had that breed forever.

Good dog names: Careless, Mu Ju, Buddy, Buster,

You could name him BC after Blog Catalog!

I like simple names like Ace or Dart or Arrow or something else that has just one syllable or maybe two like Riley. I usually watch my dogs for awhile before I name them and try to select a name that reflects their personalities or habits.

I'm a big fan of naming animals with people names. It cracks me up when dogs are named Mike or Harry or Dave.

Nixon is good - but Ehrlichman is better

I've been to a bunch of pet naming sites but i can't really find anything i think suits him. But i don't want to put off naming him too long because i need to know it for training.

How about Woof? This way your neighbors will give you strange looks whenever you're standing in your doorway barking like a dog, but you're really calling the dog to come inside.
    1. armywife65
@onehypo...lol...That was a good one. I like that statement
  16. goddessecouture
My cat was named Oreo by the Humane Society, but my little one couldn't pronounce it, so she called him Cookie. It stuck. In the same vein, maybe Argyle could just be Socks? (or maybe Golf Pants?)

Hmm well if we're going with Republican presidents my dog growing up was named Gipper, after Reagan's nickname.

    Hi

I haven't got any suggestions just atm for you sorry, but I wanted to say good on your for taking him in, and giving him a new forever home !

Most of my dogs have already been named when they have come into my life, and so I think it's part of them, and have never changed their names. I did own a dog once that was named 'Killer' which I hated, and changed it to 'Sabre'
  22. MadMadMargo
Merlin is a nice name for a border collie.
    1. MadMadMargo
Oops, border terrier - sorry, I misread. Now, that I know what one looks like, how 'bout "Rufus".

  23. armywife65
I'm so happy to hear that you adopted/rescued your little 4 legged friend. We also did with our 2 dogs.
Chuck who is a Golden Retriever/Corgi mix and Sarah whom is a Terrier Mix.
    Your dog sounds really cute.

    @gtally: lol...I couldn't imagine a dog named cat :-D
  26. CoyoteRose
He's a border terrier not a border collie, which is a little different. He's a zippy little fella though.

    and he likes corn chips.
    1. timethief
I like Border terriers - bigtime
Why not call him Zip or Zipper then?
    2. Shiley
      Chip? Terry (i)? Fella?
    3. armywife65
@CoyoteRose--Corn chips? ooooh I would not give him those. They are bad for him, especially the corn. I make my own dog treats, you either check our my dog blog or google in free dog treat recipes. they are really are easy to make. I like what TT suggested Zip and the one I recently suggested Grizzle, or even Zippy
You used both of those words to describe you new addition, maybe name him one of those.
  27. Shiley
My mom one had a thing for King Arthur we had a male and female border collie their names were Lancelot (Lance for short) and Gwen.
  28. LynneaUrania
My mother had a Westie named, "Sir Reginald Kings Rhapsody." She thought that was too high-falutin' so she renamed him, "Scruffy."

I've always wanted to keep a full human name for a dog..

and then have a nickname and call it by that...
  45. Hels
You need to pick a name that reflects the dog's personality.

Our last labrador was a very regal looking beast so we gave him an imperial name: Emperor Rudolf II of Prague (or Rudy for short).

If your dog is less regal and more physical, for example, consider calling him The Bouncer.

If he is slightly lunatic, The Rogue might be more appropriate.

    You have to love dogs
