Don't tell me to give it to you- that's not spending it. Neither is putting it away for a rainy day or giving it away to charity although I'm all for social entrepreneurs so that's different (you get some product/service in return).

So, I've got an extra $50,000 on top off everything I need to pay for for the next 4 months: mortgage, loans, bills, etc.

How should I spend it? Or if you had it, how would you spend it?

Give the $50K to these 2, and sell tickets - then you'll have $100K to worry with.

Set up a scholarship for a disadvantaged student.
    1. crpitt
Pfffft where is the PROFIT! in that.

the profit is for greencurmudgeon I feel...
    3. singaporecaddy
I actually like that- can you define "disadvantaged"?
  4. Shiley
If my bills for the next 4 months were taken care of I would purchase a new computer, video camera, digital camera, a car, and put the rest in my kids bank accounts for college.
    1. singaporecaddy
Although my electronics are mostly from 1-2 years ago, I feel no reason to upgrade (for me). And putting it in the bank for college is like contributing 1/100th to the bonus of the CEO.
  5. cathy13
Seriuously, if I had $50,000 and everything was paid for and this was just icing.....
then I would re-do my entire wardrobe and by high quality designer duds and buy at least 3 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes!
    1. TJlubrano
Aaah I would love to have Christian Louboutin shoes!

  8. dbowles1017
I got some student loans that could be paid off
    1. singaporecaddy
But if I paid them off, how would you learn responsibility?
    2. dbowles1017
I know responsibility... Paying back loans will just mean I have to live in debt for several years
    3. singaporecaddy
Thing is, I get nothing out of this deal. Sucks for me so I'm not liking it.

    Pay down the national debt!
    1. singaporecaddy
Singapore doesn't have any deficit. It's in the black with bonuses to boot- except for last year because of the lousy investments in Morgan Stanley and Citibank.
  13. amybyrd21
help people that need it. Not people that will waste it. People that in your country help make it a better place. Farmers, teachers, religious if you so want to. Help save the bees that are dying off. They are doing research for that. Hell buy you some bees and get started. Promote something important to you.
    1. singaporecaddy
No agriculture whatsoever in Singapore- it's too small. We get everything from everybody else. But I agree about the bees, it's a sad thing. Someone's gotta figure out the problem in the US. It's not happening elsewhere. Maybe the whole making them work hard from place to place instead of keeping them just in one area is killing them off. Research into that is a good idea ... I'll seriously think about it.
    2. amybyrd21
We have 2 hives and are learning more and more everyday. We are working with the farmers around here about spraying the fields in the evenings after the bees go in and all. A friend that lives in the same county lost 40 hives out of 440 last year. It is scary.
    3. singaporecaddy
No way, that's a lot of dead bees. Does anyone have any inkling as to what's killing them off? Is it the chemicals- you seem to be guessing the sprays are doing it? It's such a recent phenomenon. Do you write about this in your blog? Keep me posted, I am very interested in this.
    4. amybyrd21
They think it is a combo of several things it is called Colony collapse disorder (CCD) They think it is the lack of pollen, the weather change, the sprays and enviroment. There is a big movement underway from burts bees, and ben and jerry ice cream to help study it. There are several scientist involved. I writ about it from time to time on my blog but not that often. I do post pics f the bees on there and a good stron hive has around 60,000 bees to start with. They double in numbers every 21 days. They have diffrent life spans depending on their jobs and time of year. If you want more info just shout to me and I will get you what you want I have done it for people in the past and even blogged about topics for people that they have interest in the bees are my hubbys and I have to get info from him but I am too learning as I go.
  14. HollytheHousewife
Go find all the people u can and give them 3 mos. Worth of mort payments. Buy them time so I can get 2 dc and get our tax $ back
    1. singaporecaddy
ah, so this "find the people" is you :). I used to work in DC, you don't need to be there to cause waves. You just need to find someone to back your cause. Being there is mesmerizing and the learning curve is steep. People are not just going to listen to you- they can talk a better talk and pitch a better pitch and they can look like they're listening but they're not. Work with someone you know ....
  15. MadameX
If I had an extra $50,000 after all of my family's needs were taken care of, I can't imagine doing anything but giving the bulk of it to charity. I know you said not to suggest that, but I can't really imagine a scenario in which anything else is acceptable.
    1. singaporecaddy
Well, if you give it to charity, its $50,000. If you buy stuff from a social enterprise like Kiva- in this case you're buying "loans" for people who just need a little help- as little as $25.00, it grows and makes a lot more sense. Your 50K can become 75K- not for you, but for the community as a whole.
    2. MadameX
Funny you should mention that. I was just reading today about how micro-loans, originally intended to help people in very impoverished areas become self-sufficient, had been largely destroyed by the entry into the market of greedy venture capitalists.
    3. singaporecaddy
There are still a lot of very legit and helpful microfinancing companies around. The best cases are of course in Bangladesh where it all started with the Grameen Bank. I don't see how greedy venture capitalists can destroy microfinancing short of them stealing from the business. There are many many successful cases and I've personally gone to visit many of the families who have benefitted greatly from being able to take a loan out of a legit entity versus having to borrow from a loan shark.

I'm interested in what you've been reading about VC's destroying microfinancing. This is the first I am hearing about it and if its really happening would warn the ones I am in touch with. Thanks!

I could buy a house in Mexico with that money. A nice house!
    1. singaporecaddy
      Really? Which city in Mexico?
  17. Shuttercraft
I would love to buy a HASSELBLAD Camera with a few good lenses. I think I would need 60,000 for that...
    1. singaporecaddy
Oooh, that's a nice camera. You're right, I think 50K isn't enough for a full set up. I know where to get cheap 50mm, and 50-200mm lenses though. But yeah, nope, that's for a bigger budget. hahah
  18. LolitaV
    buy lolita vida shoes
  19. marketborn
Its so less. I had a space trip in mind.

In case you are considering donation. I suggest the Rooturaj Pattanaik Foundation.
    1. singaporecaddy
Nope, no donations. Only $$ to buy stuff from social entreprises.
  20. LaurenM622
man... if i had an extra $50,000, i'd buy a chanel 2.55 (black) and as many pairs of louboutins as i could. or i'd go back to paris and stay as long as possible. but probably the purse and they shoes. they'll last forever.
    1. singaporecaddy
Now I'm curious as to how many shoes you have in your closet now.
    2. LaurenM622
too many shoes! i have a closet full of them at my parent's house (where i'm living temporarily) and another closet full in the apartment i normally live in...

      ...i should probably scale down, shouldn't i? ;-)
  21. Avellar
    1) Buy 50,000 dollar tacos
    2) Buy a few junker cars for you and friends, then demolition derby
    3) Hold a HUGE surprise party for a friend or loved one

Or you could just buy me a new car
    1. singaporecaddy
I like option #2- sounds like fun. I really don' think 50K is enough though. The legal fees would be huge to hold the party
    2. legbamel
You could buy a really nice car and you and your friends could total it with sledgehammers, then. No legal fees and you can easily spend the $50k on car, drinks, and snacks. Well, maybe not easily exactly, but it could be done.
    3. singaporecaddy
Ouch, I don't think I have that much rage in me to do this.
  22. Theresa111
    Create a rainy day fund.
    1. singaporecaddy
Where would you invest this $$ in?
  23. feedyourwallet
If I had that money I'll invest in jewelries.

They are pleasing items that may, or may not show a profit but will still give pleasure. It’s never gone out of fashion, never dates or fades.
    1. singaporecaddy
diamonds ... and gold is still going up, over $950 I last checked. Bought some at $660 but sold at $730+, shoulda kept it. Woulda kept it if I had the real stuff instead of the certificates. good idea.
    2. feedyourwallet
      Thank you!
  24. JamCan
I would buy a house in Jamaica (because that can buy a nice house there), and rent out the rooms to travellers. I could make a trailer load of cash because I know a trailer load of people who ask me about places to stay there.
    1. singaporecaddy
That is a good idea- but I don't know anything about Jamaica except that Sidney Poitier grew up there.
    2. JamCan
That's okay.....I'd look after it for you LOL
  25. wagerwitch
I will sell you poetry - on any subject - any words - lyrics...

    LOL!

But you could buy a ton of things...

    Musical instruments...

    WHAT do YOU want?

I would consider investing it - or - PLAYING with it...

It really depends on what you want.

I have a condo in Kodiak Alaska that I will sell for 75,000.00

Anything else you want - just buy it - or invest it.
    1. wagerwitch
In fact give me an idea of what your HOBBIES and or DREAMS are - and I'll point you in that direction.

I mean there are THOUSANDS and BILLIONS of things you could buy with that money...

But it really is up to you - on what YOU want...

I mean I could suggest that you visit a hospital with children who are dying - and take 3 of the on a dream holiday with their families to Disney...

I could suggest that you purchase into some new companies - and buy stocks.

I could suggest that you buy commodities like gold/silver/platinum/jewels...

Or you could buy art - like from some of the people here on BC.

You could find a couple of blogs or writers that you think are worthwhile and INVEST in publishing them. (You could make a tidy profit!)

You could buy yourself clothes - you could buy yourself cars - you could buy a new house remodel.

So many things - BUT --- WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS?
    2. singaporecaddy
A condo??? I didn't think Alaska had any high rises- that's what I think of when I hear condominium, that it's a tall building. It would be cool to have a house in Alaska :).
    3. singaporecaddy
Sorry it took me a while to get back to you- I had to think about my dreams to give you a serious answer to that question.

      (1) I'd like to help people out- but not charity type stuff, more on the line of social entrepreneurship.
      (2) I've always wanted to go to Japan and dip in the natural hot springs and have sushi and sashimi all day long, the kind that only the local folk have
      (3) I am an arts buff so I would actually be seriously interested in investing in some pieces by struggling artists whose work resonates with me. I have bought a few in the past.
      (4) Most of the stuff I want to do- 50K is too little to cut it so maybe I should just invest it and grow it some more before I spend it.
    4. wagerwitch
I think investing is probably your best bet.

Seriously - if you were to double it in ONE year - (which is VERY possible) Then you could start a constant Philanthropy model.

For example - this year - you invest.

Next year you take half of the double - and you re-invest that.

And so on and so on.

THAT would give you 25,000K to spend on others (Charity, art, publishing, etc.- and 25K to play with...

You could double up your personal 25K - and make it into 50K every 2 years.

It's a DOABLE and RENEWABLE thing - if you were really interested in doing something like that.

There are A TON of starving artists or people who could use a hand in getting published.

So in the LONG run - you COULD help a lot of folks - and at the same time - have a lot of fun with yourself.

      LOL!
  26. aspotofblog
You can spend it on me, thanks
    1. singaporecaddy
How do I spend it on you? What do I get in return?
  27. Rory
Hmmmmm, I'd charter a private jet and take my bestest buddies on a trip to Macao for a highly pampered, extra comfy long weekend.

Who knows? You could come back with more than you had and it would a whole new set of questions on what to do with my extra $250,000!!
    1. singaporecaddy
That's positive thinking - I've never walked out of a casino with more money than I had going in. Well, I have actually, but I always end up giving it all back and then some in the next casino.

    I play anywhere from a 9 to a 12 handicap!!
    1. singaporecaddy
Shoot! You're right. Fly in a couple of a friends ... stay there. Wow, I'm drooling now. Can I actually do it ... it sounds soooo wasteful, but what a serious treat.
    2. Rory
Only problem is the tee times sometimes need to be booked a year in advance! But, things can happen. Other choices ... Royal Troon, Pebble Beach, TPC at Sawgrass ...

Come get me in Toronto!!! LOLOLOLOL.

Id say let budding entrepeneurs put forward their business proposals and you vet them then support a few financially by getting a stake in their business.

Helping a new business while getting in on the action!

i want to spend your money, but i still confused with your first post, what its mean? i want money now, i have launch a blog but my blog until now didnt get a profit, im so sad with this happen,
  42. legbamel
I do think that the micro-loans would be a terrific way to spend the money. After you buy a Les Paul guitar, that is. Now that's an investment (and one only going to increase in value, as long as you take care of it, now that the great man has passed.)
    1. singaporecaddy
How much are they going for now?
    2. legbamel
Well, you can get a reproduction of his '59 standard from Gibson for about $16,000. (You can get a Les Paul Guitar Hero controller for about fifty bucks, though. ) I don't know that many of the guitars he actually owned or played are listed for sale or bid easily, but vintage 50s models of the Gibsons with his name on them can be well over your $50k seed money.

Thanks everyone for giving me your funny or thoughtful suggestions. I really appreciate it. For those who are interested, I just wanted you to know that I'm deciding between:

(1)Splurging it all on a fantasy golf trip for four to St. Andrews or Pebble Beach or the like-
(2)Reinvesting the money in a social enterprise/or pure for-profit business -OR-
(3)Buying some artwork from emerging artists.

In addition to the 50K, will be setting aside some money to give to research bodies that I'm personally interested in like alternative therapies for cancer as well as the bee situation in the US.

    Cheers everyone!

put 10% in government owned banks in fixed deposit for one, two, or three years or more ( no faith on privates this time of year )

take 10% to make things around the satisfactory wishes of your family members and yourself !

put 50% in your bank account ( prefer government bank ) , and keep it just to pay any bills, mortage etc...

use 5% on evening outings with your family on weekly basis ! so distribute that 5% in the amount of time that this money is to be used.

use 10% to spend on elders, who live away... make them happy !

use 10% to help someone needy, poor and else !

use 5% to be in ur purse , haha... , nope.. use 5%'s 10percent i.e 50$ out of 2500$ or just any preferable amount to donate me here weindex.blogspot.com/...

and rest of it in your secret locker under ur bed, emergency ! plus have them distributed and placed at separate secret places in ur home... locked ones !
    1. singaporecaddy
Hey, how did you know about the secret locker ...

You kind of have to weed through them....

But I'm going to show you an artist that I think is INTERESTING...

If you haven't met RIVY - you should... He runs Notches...

It's a life journey art - you have to look beyond his computer stuff and look to his paintings - and maybe you should ask him about them...

He's a total experience and a very NEAT person.

    notches.blogspot.com/

you have to follow and understand how his life influenced his art - and how he has come out with an interesting perspective on life - after battling self doubt - alcoholism and much much more... It's an experience you shouldn't miss.

I could probably show you some more artists but you'll have to choose what you're interested in.

I write poetry - so if you ever want to publish a poet - or need poetry/lyrics for any occasion, let me know. I'm not quite starving - but it's not always a far off thing. LOL!

Also you should really look into HEPATITIS C - if you're going to put money into a disease - HCV has truly destroyed people - and it could be cured... There just isn't enough pharmaceutical care: They would rather pass out the expensive TREATMENT instead of finding a PERMANENT CURE.

Which is very very sad to me.

And - since I'm a gambler - I would say very much ENJOY yourself on a gambling trip - THAT would be soooo much fun!

Take care whatever you decide to do - and thank you for sharing this fun exercise.... It was a great piece of imagination at work!

Thanks Wagerwitch, I really appreciate your taking the time to put the list together for me and making me think in much broader but at the same time clearer terms. Not afraid of witches anymore, at least your kind.

I just looked at Notches ... I like what I see, must read up on his life journey.

I'll check out your poetry and see if you can come up with a great one on golf!

Oooh golf? I might be able to do that... - see the SLAM thread... Just for fun - OK?

You could make up one too - if ya like.

I will join any other MLM, buy physical gold from the local bank, etc craps out there. And after few more months I hope to meet the total spending of 50 thousands +plus get the returns of other 50 thousands in income from the spending. That is the smart way to spend, spend 50 thousand but you get the money back later.

Develop a low fat ramen noodle product since Nissin took the only such product off the American market earlier this year. It's real simple: Use non-fried instant noodles, thereby removing almost all the fat. If someone develops and markets it, I'll be buying! I've had to try to create my own through combining separate products. If it could all be one place again, that would be huge!

Go solar. It will pay for itself and you'll be helping the environment.

Pay off your high interest bills. If you still have leftovers, depending on what type of risk taker you are, you can try playing the stock market, or open a time deposit account and collect interest on your money for a year or two.

All the ideas are very interesting. I usually divide such amounts - allowing some for fun (which can include charity, vacations or stuff), some for duty (paying off loans) and some for the future (I invest in tax liens.) The tax liens this year in my state (Colorado) are paying 10 percent. Beats the heck out of what banks will offer. I either get the interest, or the property. Given the economy, I'm betting several investors will end up with properties for pennies on the dollar.

you could buy a "brandable" domain, have a high class website developed for it and, for a few thousand dollars, market said domain to your "target" audience. If it's in the right market, (jobs', social, credit etc..) you should be on your way to a very profitable venture in a matter of months...
There are quite a few "high traffic" "niche" domains that are already established and "brandable" that you could jump right into and... best of all you wouldnt have to do anything.. your "website" works "around" the clock 24/7 for you (once it's set up properly)!
    1. DaniG
Hey, profileguy! Just went to your blog and it was GREAT! You've got keen insight and an incredible ability to boil stuff down to the essential. I'm still digesting your advice on this question...Not sure I understand "brandable domains" yet. (DaniG scratches head over $50K traveling around world, or $50K in cyberworld...) Hmmm.

Given the stipulations that you provide (no charity, gifts, or savings), I would probably insulate my house, install central air, and replace older appliances with energy star versions. That way my energy bills would be less. It's never a bad idea to invest in your own future.
    1. DaniG
I just added an energy star washing machine to our home - It is REALLY quiet. Wish I had added it years ago!

Identify three/four micro-entrepreneurs through the internet from (1) Africa (2) South Amereca (3) India (4) China and give them start-up funds of $ 10000 each as a loan convertible into equity - This sum should go a long way in those parts of the world. And if even one project clicks, you'll have lots more of surplus funds to bother about in due course! Also, do take a look at my blogs and revert with your suggestions!
  59. blogirific
If I had an extra $50,000 I would invest it. More to the point, I'd look for entrepreneurs who would flurish with an investment.

I think the experience of helping an entrepreneur, online or offline, achieve their goals, with my help and money would be awesome. In fact, when I get to that point, I plan on doing just that. Of course, taking a risk, even a calculated risk, is exciting enough, but to watch a website or company grow on a day to day basis would be gratifying.

So, what are you going to do with the money? Or was this a hypothetical question? Take care!
  60. wagerwitch
Since this question popped up again... I had to take a shot at it ... GRIN.

Well - you could also support me.

I've had the most interesting last couple of weeks. LMAO!

    Let's see...

I had a buyer put down 12,000.00 for my house - and with a real estate team drew up the documents that he was supposed to pay the remainder a week and a half ago when he got a specific check.

The check was confirmed and the purchaser requested to move in immediately to the residence - so we moved our moving plans up 3 weeks, costing us an extra 3 grand. But we moved out - and drove halfway on our journey - stopping at my family's house in Washington (we were in Kodiak, Alaska).

He moved into the residence for one week.

He then went back to his home state (Colorado) to get his furniture (supposedly) and decided to not return.

(Of course, prior to his leaving he left the key under the porch mat - had tried to sell the property even though he didn't fully own it.)

So - we are sitting at our family's house... Trying to sell our place again (we do have a buyer - but I don't TRUST ANYONE these days after this escapade)

Because we didn't make it to Maine this week - we might not be able to go ----- BECAUSE it has started to freeze - and if we aren't there when the ground freezes - we WILL NOT have ANY running water until Spring.

So - this little venture with this guy - has caused us a MAJOR PROBLEM And set us back in the thousands.

So --- we may not be going to Maine until Spring and have to stay with family - ALTHOUGH --- my entire household group of items is ALREADY on the way to Maine - where there is no one to offload it or to put it into storage or anything...

    YIKES.

So my belief in humanity has become severely limited in the last couple of days.

My suggestion: Adopt me for a week - and provide an allowance of 50K so I can get someone to heat and winterize my place in Maine - have some wood set up for the winter - which it may be WAY too late to do now... And send us out in a plane - with our 3 kitties and my car...

    Voila!

There - your worries about spending that extra dinero is NOW over.

    LMAO!

Or - you could go on a gambling binge and visit every website on my blog --- and earn me some big bucks... LMAO!

    (Just kidding on that one.)

Now - that this has been resurrected - here's hoping you found something to do with your funding.

Haven't seen you much on here lately - and really - I just wanted some place to complain a little... LOL! And to say HI! At the same time!

      LOL!

buy stock in Gamestop. I was buying stock in it every year around Oct then selling it in Mid Jan. It always seems to go up during that period. I do not like to buy stock for the short term, but this cycle always worked for me..
