1. A
2. F?
3. B - it's clearly an environmental circumstance though mental instability/mental disorders do factor in. -

Part of the problem with question 1 goes to the use of the word 'empire.' Without some sort of clarification on how the word is being used, it's almost impossible to respond. In addition, there are many many different civilizations that might be listed in addition to those you have in your options. Alexander the Great? Ancient Egypt? Modern day Iran (since the clergy actually rule but the prez is a spokesperson for policy). So that's an impossible one to answer (for me, maybe not for others).
On question 2, I don't know. But I find this part eloquent but worrisome: "...how we can have a society that fills us up again and makes us feel that we are part of something bigger than ourselves." Because I see that as a spiritual aim rather than a government aim--we already are, in other words, part of something bigger than ourselves, in my opinion. Soon as you assign the aspiration to a government, in my opinion, you have completely failed the mission.
On 3, I think both or either. Some people may have inherent evil--there was a report out last week about DNA markers in people who tend towards violence (I didn't read it; this is a very loose recollection). And some are raised in misery yet manage to return good to others, such as youth who were assigned to concentration camps during the Holocaust then if they were lucky enough to live, managed to lead productive lives. I don't think there's a cut and dried answer to that question either.
So who's the article for?-
Your thought on #2 have interested me - so to further the dicussion, I will tell you that the answer is Hillary Clinton. It was when her father was dying and she had a commitment to make a speech in Austin at a function honoring Barbara Jordan (I think it was Barbara). Anyway, Hillary fly to Austin long enough to make the speech and then immediately left to be with her father. When she returned, the family made the decision to take her father off of life support.
She never made a speech like that before nor since (that I know of) and I have been fasinated by her ever since then. That was in President Clinton' s first term but I suspect that you know that. You seem very intelligent and well read.
