Since it's been over a month since an argument has been shared I figured it's that time again. As some of you know, Em and I have been cooped up in a hotel since the last week of October due to a fire at my place.

We definitely needed a break from one another and it occurred when she went home for the week of Thanksgiving. Of course, all good things must come to an end and she's back as of yesterday and full of bright ideas.

The adversaries:

Emily - 21 year old, daughter type creature.

Me - 47 year old, father type creature.

Setting:

Hotel room which we are calling home until my place is repaired/ready for habitation.

Ensuing Conversation:

Daughter type creature: So when does it look like we'll be back in the house again?
Father type creature: One, possibly two weeks. I've pretty much given up on guessing.
Daughter type creature: Why don't you rent an apartment until it's ready?
Father type creature: I don't want to move twice in the next couple of weeks.
Daughter type creature: But you're getting so grumpy.
Father type creature: Yes I am.
Daughter type creature: I don't think you've even used the pool here at the hotel. You should do that. Maybe that would relax you and you wouldn't be so grumpy.
Father type creature: I'm grumpy because we're homeless. A swimming pool isn't going to change that.
Daughter type creature: We're not homeless.
Father type creature: Until the house is done, we're homeless.
Daughter type creature: If you want I'll run to the house and find your swimming trunks.
Father type creature: No.
Daughter type creature: The pool here is great though. You should really try it.
Father type creature: Why don't you go swimming and I'll continue watching football.
Daughter type creature: I'm running to the house. I'll be right back.
Father type creature: Em, no. Everything is packed away in the basement. And, I don't want to swim.
Daughter type creature: Are you sure?
Father type creature: Positive. You know, you've been gone for six days and I'll confess to possibly missing you on a couple of occasions. Why don't you tell me how your week went back home?
Daughter type creature: How about I do that later, I'm going swimming. Ashlyn is on her way over.
Father type creature: Fine.
Daughter type creature: I'll bet if Ashlyn asks you to go swimming, you'll go. She has you wrapped around her little finger.
Father type creature: Both of you girls are driving me insane. Neither of you will get me to go swimming.
Daughter type creature: Yeah, right.
Father type creature: Maybe I should get you your own hotel room.
Daughter type creature: I thought you said the insurance company is only willing to pay for one though?
Father type creature: That's all they're willing to pay for. I'm thinking I should spring for the other one.
Daughter type creature: Don't be silly. That would be expensive.
Father type creature: It would be more peaceful though.
Daughter type creature: You're just being grumpy. All I'm trying to do is cheer you up.
Father type creature: I'll be a little more cheerful when you go swimming and a lot more cheerful when we get back home.
Daughter type creature: I hope so.
Father type creature: Go swimming. If you're hungry in a couple of hours we can head out and grab something to eat.
Daughter type creature: Can we go to Old Country Buffet?
Father type creature: Oh gawd. (This topic is an entirely different argument.)

I think possibly, kids at the age of 18 and 21, which the girls happen to be, are clueless and their mindset is just set automatically to care free. Or maybe I am just grumpy. What do you people think?

lol...You're as bad as Em is.

    2. crpitt
Okay go fishing! Maybe a nice trip on the river away from the hotel room will do you good
    3. monkeytale
Sadly, it's too cold and I already have the boat winterized. No fishing for me until spring.
    4. crkian
Go fishing in your swimming trunks
    5. monkeytale
lol...You guys are a big help.

    6. crpitt
Ender had a unique idea about fishing without a rod? Maybe nows the time for that?

      How about a pottery class?

i have NO idea what claire is talking about.

      none.

At the age of 18-21 I didn't think of anything but myself, so I probably wouldn't of cared if you went swimming or not. Unless I wanted you out of that room.
  4. monkeytale
Although I'm not going to tell Em, I think I'm just too grumpy right now for much of anything. Ender always has unique ideas... or something.
    1. crpitt
I dont blame you for being grumpy and I actually agree with you on this one.
This wont be the norm though
    2. monkeytale
I'm going to copy and paste that you agreed with me and show Em.
    3. crpitt
But will she take notice of a fellow grump?lol.
  5. talen32
Soon she'll be living her own life...take a break and take a swim with her...quality time is always good.

Look like it's almost unanimous. I think you should have that swim too, then tell us about it.

I see this as a playful discussion!

    Dive in!
    1. monkeytale
Most of my threads, when I'm here, are pretty playful. But I am more than a lil grumpy lately.
    2. globalgirl
Well, joking aside, who wouldn't feel a bit grumpy after your experience?! I would! But maybe the swim would have alleviated the pressure for a time, so you could simply treasure silly time with your daughter that loves you!

    Spring for the extra room.

Seriously, I was 21 just a few years ago and I know that if my Dad and I were stuck in the same room for weeks on end we'd both go batty.

Actually, here's a better idea, encourage her to find a job. I know it isn't easy (I'm still looking for one) but if she gets a job she can move into her own apartment and visit on a casual, somewhat less frequent, basis. Search the newspaper want ads for her, if necessary.

If you won't go swimming, do some other kind of activity that gets you exercise and out of the room. I know this will sound strange coming from a fellow American, but if you won't swim, how about---gulp---going out for some long walks?
  12. clioandme
P.S. This place isn't normal without your ugly mug to cheer us up once in a while. Good to see you back here.

I'm actually in my own house right now....and it looks like the place will be ready by wed/thurs for the move back home. Definitely not as grumpy now...;)
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh, that IS good news. I'm sorry you've had to deal with this stuff, but glad it's looking up now.
  15. RecycleCindy
Good to hear some better news from you. Best wishes...

  17. crpitt
    Wed/Thurs thats great news!
    1. monkeytale
You have no idea how great that news is. Even Em is willing to admit that my grumpiness is disappearing.
  18. Manictastic
Will you go swimming now, mikster?
    1. monkeytale
Um...no. I'm too busy now, happily so though.

    2. daizie
      I am so wounded...WOUNDED I TELL YA!
    3. ender
wounded? i thought daizie was a whiner ....

      MWAHAHAHAHAhahahahahaha
  19. iriegal
Well Mikster, she sounds like she loves her Daddy. You are one special father to have wonderful kids in your life. You are not grumpy, in your situation (which is stressful) just a bit irritated. She wants to try and cheer you up, go swimming (after football). (wait until both girls come over, then you won't hear about favoritism)

Wow...you ask Irie's opinion and you get a novel...sigh...that is just me though. I wish I had a dad like you though, who loves his girls.

First.. fires are devastating.. the loss of personal possesions and thinking how easily you could lose your life. Second.. living in close quarters against your will is enough to try the patience of a saint.

Don't be too hard on them for trying to cheer you up, it shows they care and want to make sure you're ok.

Get out of that room.. live and realize soon you will be back home.
