Has anyone ever made a baby book?

My sister just called and said the one item she'd wanted to splurge on was the baby book and she can't find a single one she likes in Manhattan. So, being a graphic designer, I smacked her upside the head and informed her I would be delighted to make one for her. This way it can really be personalized to their family (she's from the U.S. and her husband is Colombian).

So, since I don't have one to look at at the moment, what kinds of pages are most important to parents to have in a baby book?

(I do intend to go out to Barnes & Noble this week and do some research ... just thought I'd start here.)

    it sounded funny

Simple images that the child understands. No distracting background.

A lot of the Steiner Education material has very light imagery, it might be worth a peep at their stuff for ideas. I think the softer the lines the better.

My wife was really fond of the ones that Nestle' gives away from the very best baby website. I'll ask her latter what she liked in them.

thanks! these are good thoughts, but what about the content for the pages?

so far i have about your parents; family tree (truncated version), fun benchpoints about the world (price of gas, etc), getting ready for you, baby shower page, details of birth page, photos of home and nursery, watch me grow, various picture pages (including: first bdays, early holidays, favourite people, school pics, report card page)

My son's early favorite baby books involved common animals (the whole book) or common objects around the house (but nothing dangerous like an iron). Another favorite showed other babies.

A little later there were also the classics, "Good Night Moon", "The Wheels on the Bus," "The Purple Crayon."

OMG ... harold and the purple crayon got me in SOOOOO much trouble (and not with a crayon, either)

What about 'moments that will be imprinted on your heart forever page'...too mushy??

nothing's too mushy for my sister! lmfao

actually, i'm gonna wind up floating the whole table of contents by her, so the more ideas, the better!

I LOVE this thread, let me count the ways

    - Ender, you're a guy, making an awesome baby book gift for your sister (she will LOVE it - homemade gifts are the best)
    - Only men have responded to this thread - I think that gets an A+ for interest, insight and recommendations.

All of you guys are super cool.

So, let's see, given I have no babies, but lots of nephews and nieces and friends who do, baby books first need to be made with ooodles of love. That is quintessential.

What about images of his family from Columbia and, of course, your side of the family to give a sense of heritage and beginnings?

Ive written about 8 short stories for children all with the same theme and characters just never bothered doing anything with them.

What I notice about images for children is they should always be as if the words on that page are in the image on the page, most younger children use the image to help them read the story.
    1. globalgirl
      You need to publish them!

And, again, another super guy responding to a baby book thread. Cool!

Nah I will leave it to spoticus for the moment
    3. globalgirl
      spoticus? what is that?
    4. globalgirl
Wow. So he is uber cool. Maybe good old spoticus has some zany ideas for the book? He looks quite creative!

Well, you gotta have the classic naked baby picture page, and the first hair cut to hold the lock of hair, first tooth, etc.

Favourite tunes So you can laugh at them when you're a teenager, or try and deny ever listening to them

    Ender nice offer ;-)
Good topics to bring to the kids attention is
    "Sharing"
    "Color and Ethic Blindness"
    "Value of Memories"

Favorite song, favorite story, first laugh, when I found my toes (trust me it's a big moment for them at the time), when I realized the toes I found were mine, THE pacifier (there isn't another one on the face of the earth that will substitute, not even if you buy them in an identical three pack), first toy, first plushy, coming home booties, the ribbon they put in my hair at the hospital, id bracelets, mine and mom's and dad's, my birth footprint (though these are in my wallet for my kids. I find it impossibly amazing just how little those prints are now), When I sat up, when I rolled over, when I got brave and when I got shy.

Course if you really get carried away this book is gonna need a steering wheel.
