Hey! My hometown had an earthquake on Thursday and I didn't even know. It triggered two landslides on Mt Garfield and could be felt from the hotel. I knew about the landslides, but did not realize they were quake related. Crazy! Check it out!

    That is pretty crazy.
    1. gtally
Yeah, we don't get too many of them out here, although President Nixon did detonate some atomic bombs underground in the 60s near Parachute. THAT caused some quakes.

I was reading about "Project Chariot" in that article. The "Nuke to Nowhere"?
    3. gtally
I thought the first nuke test in the Ploughshare program would have appealed to you more:

    What!

    No Colorado visit now.
    1. dbowles1017
only 5 people died in ziplining accidents due to the quake.
    2. gtally
Don't believe a word he says. No one was injured and it was a minor tremor. Colorado is a very geologically stable are----

RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE

      Ahhhhhh!
    3. crpitt
      Moose stampede?
    4. Stillthinking
Illinois probably gets more earthquakes than Colorado. We get one every couple of years. Tremors mostly.
  3. idealpinkrose
What?! I missed that on CNN.
  4. SweetViolet
A 2.5 quake (which you can't even feel unless you are sitting VERY still) sets everybody aflutter? Better stay away from San Francisco then!
    1. gtally
I think it was the big rushing wall of rock that cam thundering down the mountain and nearly buried Interstate 70 that had everyone excited.
    2. Stillthinking
Ok, driving to CO is out.

I can see the news report now. Unemployed Chicago woman sole victim in Colorado rock slide.
    3. gtally
Chicken. You're far more likely to go careening into one of our deep precipices than get hit by falling rock.
  5. melindaville
I agree with SweetViolent! Better stay away from San Francisco. I was there for the earthquake of '89 and there was a WHOLE lot of shaking going on! It even drew me out of my nod at the time!
    1. SweetViolet
I was there for Loma Prieta, too. I moved to the Bay Area in 74 and cannot count the number of quakes in the 3.0 to 4.0 range I sat through. A 2.5 we would not even have noticed!
    2. gtally
I once woke up to a 4 point something in the Bay Area. I thought someone was at the foot of my hotel bed shaking it! I was pissed!

We get earthquakes here that are pretty crazy but they don't happen too often...like twice a decade maybe
    1. gtally
How close are you to Mt Ranier?
    2. cookingasshole
Seattle is closer...We are by Mt. Hood
    3. gtally
Wait, that's right. You're in Oregon and Agit is in Seattle. I sometimes get confused.
    4. cookingasshole
      he is in Spokane
    5. gtally
Arrgh! I'll never get it straight. Did I tell you that scientists now believe there may be a Yellowstone style supervolcano forming under the Cascades, particularly Mt St Helens?
    6. cookingasshole
we are really close to Mt St Helens!!
    7. Stillthinking
Did anyone tell Claire about the Yellowstone super volcano set to explode in August 2010?
    8. gtally
Nah, the French-Swiss supercollider will have compacted us all into a quantum singularity by then.
    9. Stillthinking
CERN has already turned it on and the universe hasn't imploded. Now, we'll see what happens when the one at FERMI Lab, here in Suburbs of Chicago gets turned on.
    10. gtally
When they flip the switch, Chicago will morph into an alternate reality where there is no St. Patrick's Day and the Daleys have vanished.

I know. I just like paranoid end of the world conspiracy theories. I think they are hilarious.
    11. Stillthinking
Chicago without the Daleys. *laughs maniacally* This city would be unrecognizable without the Irish and the Daleys. My goodness. We had 5 non-Daley mayors and the city almost collapsed in on itself during their terms.

No matter how much of a halo they put on Mayor Harold Washington, things are way better in Chicago now under King Daley.

Of course, there are a lot of people who would disagree with that statement.
    1. gtally
      I hope you do, too!

Why has Colorado named a mountain after a fat lasagne loving cat?
    1. gtally
The mountain is named after the assassinated U.S. President, although it's a well known fact that both the cartoon cat and the politician hated Mondays.
    2. aningeniousname
If that was so, it would be named Mount Lincoln.
    3. gtally
That's right next door. Our vineyards are the the "Mt Lincoln Vineyards."
    4. aningeniousname
Must be quite deserted. They can't be many people that want to mount Lincoln. I think even Mrs Lincoln had reservations on that one. Mount Garfield on the other hand.......
    5. gtally
Yes, people frequently mount Garfield. There's even an American flag planted in it.
    6. aningeniousname
I think the best way to mount Garfield would be to crush some sleeping pills into his lasagne and then wait till Jon took Odie out.
    7. gtally
Have you ever read Garfield Minus Garfield? It's hilarious!
    8. aningeniousname
No. I don't really understand philosophy.
    9. gtally
It's a very clever humor site. This guy Photoshops out Garfield from every single panel and leaves Jim talking to himself. It's very sad, existential and funny.

      garfieldminusgarfield.net/
    10. aningeniousname
That's the saddest thing I've ever seen.
    11. gtally
      Yes. And very, very funny.
    12. Stillthinking
Just replace Jim with an Asian unemployed architect and that pretty much describes me.

      *sigh*
    13. gtally
Oh stop it! No self pity! You will land on your feet!
    14. aningeniousname
It could be worse Still, you could be an unemployed fish gutter or an unemployed pooper scooper.
    15. Stillthinking
Did I mention my cat has cancer? It just keeps getting better.
    16. gtally
I know, and I am sorry for you cat. But if you only focus on the negative you're going to make yourself depressed.
