"The Abomination of Humanity"

Since I started this blog I have addressed some contentious issues. Some topics caused quite a stir especially amongst a few fanatical Christians. Dealing with Homophobia, Discrimination, AIDS, Racism and even how we as a gay community discriminate amongst ourselves, the backlash was expected but the resulting hate mails caught my off guard at first. Later, as I wrote about topics that I knew could be controversial I anticipated receiving the nasty onslaught of hate in my inbox and they never disappointed. But with my latest Halloween article, being a light-hearted and a fun piece the hate mail I received left me flabbergasted. How could such an “innocent” article be taken and be mutilated by some narrow minded person’s ignorance. This left me to wonder, can these people really find hate in anything if they applied their twisted minds?

I'm sorry you're being treated that way, Pierre...

I suspect there are a number of folks who already get whipped out about the idea of Halloween and its pagan origins, so beyond the fact that you talk about gay issues, the holiday itself may be why the angry and outspoken may have become, um, MORE SO for your last post...

In their eyes, possibly a Rage Two-For-One Deal.

I often wonder what people get out of responding that way to strangers online. I mean, do they blast out that email in a bolt of rage and hate and then, what, sigh contentedly for a job well-done and go have an ice cold beer?

Probably the gender roles thing. In some parts of the USA people take real offense to violation of gender roles, especially in the Southeast, Texas and the Midwest.

EDIT: I'm guessing England and especially Ireland are like that too, but I've never been so I don't know, while I'd guess Spain would be less that way because the part of America built off of Spain (West & West Coast) tends to be less offended while the Northeast wasn't really built off of anyone in particular but a mishmash of nearly all of Europe!

Have you seen the movie "Brüno" with Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Da Ali G Show). Its about homophobia in the USA, and its damn funny
    1. cuteptaguy
Not yet, but think I will rent the DVD. It had quite a mixed reaction in the gay community.
    2. thecantankerouscan
I think it had such a mixed reaction is because it was so over the top. Granted, SBC is hilarious and I've actually met gay guys who are just as "look how flamboyantly gay I am" as Bruno is. However, there are gay people out there who aren't so I can understand why they would be a little up in arms when they see this painfully stereotypical character that doesn't at all represent who they are.

Regardless, the movie is worth the watch...
    3. cuteptaguy
That's very true. I think flamboyant gay men like Bruno is actually in the minority in the gay community, and that's why portions of the community took offense. However, on the other side of the fence are those in the community that enjoyed the movie and holds the believe that we should also have a sense of humor about ourselves.
    4. MrPoo
The funny part of this movie is not Bruno, but the reaction of the other people
    5. cuteptaguy
I can just imagine, watching it tonight. Will let you know what I think.

So I didn't read the article yet, really don't know if I'm gonna,bc that would just be something else on my plate to worry about. This is what u and I both know. Being gay is not main stream....why make it main stream? I don't make being straight main stream. I don't constantly focus on the fact that I'm straight, therefor I don't get hate mail from gay people saying....BALAAAH blahh blaaah....
So instead of your platform being my name is cuteguy and I'm gay! It should be.... HELLO my name is cuteguy: I like this and this. I like that and that btw here is my bf other cuteguy....back to what I was saying.... oh yea I sooo love that!!!!

Ya feel me???? DON'T MAKE IT AN ISSUE and it won't BE AN ISSUE hunny do
    1. cuteptaguy
It's easier said than done, whether I want to or not (or do or don't) I am gay, can't hide it and people still discriminate. That's why I blog about it. It's easy for a straight person to say don't make an issue about, I guess because you may not know what it's like to be on the other side. But, I get the gist of what your are trying to say.
    2. HollytheHousewife
Tru that, I don't know what it's like... Everyone needs an outlet and blogging deffinately lets me vent...
    3. cuteptaguy
That's what makes blogs and blogging great!
  5. RogerTheAlien
I don't feel like reading your entire comment, but your really cute, pta guy.
    1. cuteptaguy
      ;-) Thanks

Read the article and I feel for you. It is terrible the way people enjoy the hate that grown up around the G & L community.
    1. cuteptaguy
I blame parents for that to be honest. If a person is raised in a home where they are not taught tolerance they grow up being racists, homophobes etc. However, I should also add that I also know of some people that come from good homes (where their family lead by example) but ended up being intolerant anyway.
  7. ReneMonroe
Homophobia is, unfortuantely, a powerful presence in the world. It motivates people to do very stupid things and make extremely disturbing remarks. So yes, people can find hate in anything that they wish to find hate in just as people see certain symblos of violence while others seem them as a symbol of love.

Example: Jesus Christ on the cross. I myself, see it as a symbol of violence, while others of see it as a symbol of love. Both are equally valid. The thing is that we, as a people, need to accept eachothers differences and learn to discuss things openly without becoming irrational.
    1. cuteptaguy
I couldn't agree more. The only problem is persuading people to get to that point.
  8. Agit8r
    "Homophobia is so Gay!"

sociologically speaking this is, of course true
    1. cuteptaguy
      ;-) Ironic isn't it?
  9. cuteptaguy
I have gotten use to the hate mails, just every now-and-again one really gets to me. Why they feel the need to read my blog & send hate mail I don't know.
  10. Firkroy
I'm sorry you have to experience that kind of ignorant hate. There are many people who are afraid of what they don't understand.
    1. cuteptaguy
Thanks Firkroy, that's why I feel it's important that people be educated to understand.
    2. Firkroy
And that takes a lot bravery. It's a lot easier to just let it slide.
    3. cuteptaguy
The easy option may seem appealing, but if no one takes a stand nothing will be done. But one should carefully pick your battles I guess.

My favorite brother is gay and my kids were raised with Greg & Jay not being any different from other marriages and relationships in the family. They felt is was normal and their friends did too when they came over. I was really disappointed to read that people have not moved on from the hate. I had assumed the younger generation were open and relaxed with it.
    1. cuteptaguy
In my opinion the hate mail I received (and blogged about) was not from a person of the younger generation. However, in some of the other hate mail I got over the past 10 months there may have been a couple from the younger generation.

Due to your brother being gay and your family's acceptance thereof your children and their friends was exposed gay people and through your tolerance they too shows that, having had a good example. I think homophobic people are so due to fear, not having had exposure to gay people, not being willing to move beyond their own prejudices and inability to attempt to learn more and/or understand gay people.

There are so many cruel people out there. I watched a video on youtube yesterday of a 5 year old girl who was really good at gymnastics/cheerleading. Can you believe a couple of people managed to leave some really mean comments about a 5 year old?
    1. cuteptaguy
I can believe it. Like I said before some people can manage to find hate in everything and everywhere.
  13. thecantankerouscan
I've read through this thread and some of the comments made me so irritated. I kept seeing statements like "people should tolerate this" and "people should tolerate that" and "tolerance is needed" but why do gay people have to be "tolerated"?? They're PEOPLE, not our annoying dim-witted second cousin who licks the phone receiver and burns things. They're not the neighbour's yappy dog that we have to force ourselves to put up with or the paperboy who continues to throw our morning paper in the sprinkler. Gay people shouldn't be "tolerated"; they should be treated just like everyone else!!

Perhaps I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about because I'm not gay but I AM an intelligent woman who has a couple of gay friends. Yet, I still can't figure out what the hell homophobes are so bloody God-damn afraid of!! Gay people aren't scary or crazy and they're not going to come after you with a big knife or rape you in the street. I have yet to see a flaming gay drag queen go shoot up a bank. They're REGULAR PEOPLE just like your straight boss or your straight sister or your straight friend. Who gives a bloody fig if they like hoo-hoos or ha-has; that's their business!

IMHO, I think S&M and gothic orgies are far scarier than one dude giving another dude a kiss. Gay people pay the same taxes we all do but yet they're still treated like second-class citizens. Society needs to get their f****** heads out of their asses and get out of the dark ages!
    1. cuteptaguy
You are my new favorite person. I agree with you on the tolerance issue, but Tolerance comes before Acceptance it seems. First they have to "tolerate" us before they will "accepts" us.

I have written about this topic twice before:

Beware the Sodomites want to recruit you! warfare-delightful-dreary-life.blogspot.com/2009/08/beware-sodomites-want-t...

      and

      God Hates Fags! warfare-delightful-dreary-life.blogspot.com/2009/06/god-hates-fags.html

Both of these post quite clearly illustrate this. Some fanatical Christians hates gay people, wants us to go the hell and will not think twice of spreading their hate & intolerance. You should check out the video clip and audio clips then you will see & hear what I mean.
    2. cuteptaguy
I must also add both groups I refer to in the two blog posts are US based, but there are similar religious groups all over the world which is most unfortunite.
    3. thecantankerouscan
Okay, first of all The Cantankerous Canuck never laughs because she's too cantankerous. But "Beware The Sodomites" was, hands down, the FUNNIEST F****** THING I have read in ages! I'm sitting here with tears running down my face I'm laughing so hard. I love how you turned this jerk's insane bigotry into something positive. You just got yourself a new follower!

      Five stars for you! * * * * *
    4. b0ll0cks
So your intolerant of goths and people into s&m ?
    5. thecantankerouscan
I was simply using it as an example. It's a little weird and not my thing but you're into what you're into. Society will accept S&M and goth with whips, chains, candlewax on the nipples, big spankin' paddles, leather masks, etc but two dudes holding hands scares the bejesus out of us? Interesting....
    6. cuteptaguy
Glad you liked it, sometimes more is accomplished with a sense of humor. I mean if we can't laugh what do we have left?
    7. b0ll0cks
      @ thecantankerouscan

"Society will accept S&M and goth with whips, chains, candlewax on the nipples, big spankin' paddles, leather masks, etc but two dudes holding hands scares the bejesus out of us?"

I see your point, and well made. In the words of Rodney King "Can't we all just get along ?"
    8. cuteptaguy
Weird how odd sexual fetishes are acceptable, but two gay guys kissing is not. Even stranger is how two women kissing are even less offensive but found to be erotic.
  14. exit2013
    Shame on them!
  15. angelshair
Oh shit!! I have read your post so I am going to hell too!!! Hope they have good entertainment there ;-)))!
I am sorry for you! Just imagine that they think they will have more chance to go to heaven if they condemn you to hell.
  16. cuteptaguy
With all us queer folk there hell sure will not be boring ;-)
    1. angelshair
Exactly my point! Just don't forget music and pop corns :-D))!
    2. b0ll0cks
LMAO Hell, will be a non stop rave, full of pagans and homo's ! It will be like the mid 90's rave days in the U.S.
    3. cuteptaguy
      Don't forget the parades!!!!
    4. angelshair
The parades! the parades! the parades!!!!!!!
    5. cuteptaguy
Floats, drag queens, sexy guys in gold skimpy g-strings, dykes on bikes....
  17. b0ll0cks
I thought it was a fun read. I always loved the dress up aspect of Halloween, and agreed with much of the article. Who knows, maybe you scared every straight Christian male who dressed up like a woman this Halloween. They all think their gay now or something.

I say who cares let the hate mail fly. You should take some of the hate mail and start a monthly column called "d00d I got flamed "! And then publicly make fun of the morons who sent you hate mail. Screw em if they can't take a joke. And yes, some people will always look for something to hate. Sad but true.
    1. cuteptaguy
I might just do that. It would be fun, naughty and oh so decadent!
  18. roentarre
    Good observation on that.

A lot of straight people would not care.
    1. cuteptaguy
But they should, what will happen if they have a gay child?
