    The Fly.. disgusting
  2. Sam1982
    The original or the remake?
    1. Kiwipulse
      The remake from 1986
    2. busylizzy
I like the original better. I can a do great impression of the fly guy caught in the web at the end. It's creepy! I didn't like the remake b/c it was just plain gross and disgusting!

    Evil Dead 2
  4. Sam1982
I thought army of darkness was the better one of the series. Bruce is a legend though. What are your feelings on the possible fourth evil dead being made?
    1. busylizzy
Just rented "My Name is Bruce." Seen it?
    2. fruitcake
      I loved Army of Darkness!
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
I just rented My Name is Bruce, too. "Army of Darkness" is my favorite of his films so far. Also "Bubba Ho-Tep."

Shutter (Thai version). That one had me literally jumping from my seat like no horror film has done before.

But there are way too many horror films/series that are deemed "classics" and that I have yet to watch.

    Hi

I don't normally watch horror type films, but here's one (Black Sheep) that was rather quirky. Was filmed in New Zealand ;-)

  7. Sam1982
I haven't seen the original shutter - the remake was the typical asian horror remake though so for me it was pretty much one in the same as all the rest
    1. Friday13
The Ring (1) is the only Asian horror remake worth watching. All the others are just ... to be avoided.
    2. samureyed
Actually I just saw Mirrors recently, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised... except for the bathroom scene (it just may haunt my dreams for eternity)
  8. Sam1982
I know it sounds bad, im a kiwi and still haven't seen black sheep yet - braindead ( aka dead alive ) is another new zealand horror classic
    1. Jules66
      Oh really..
I kinda enjoyed it a weird sort of way (probably because of the humour in it) ! LOL
I'll have to check out that other one then! ;-)
  9. Sam1982
its an early peter jackson zombie movie - you cant go wrong. But its not for the weak of stomach. I think it still holds the record for the film with the most use of fake blood or something like that.
  10. freeatlast
Just watched Tarantino's Dusk 'till Dawn... don't know if it is the worst horror movie, but quite hilarious and disturbing at the same time... campy is the word I'm looking for.
  11. codesucker
Favorite horror book - Tommyknockers by S.King
  12. Sam1982
I though dusk till dawn was really original, shame that the series went downhill with the direct to dvd sequels.

I havent read tommyknockers but I wasnt impressed with the miniseries. But stephen king books hardly ever translate well to film ( there are a few exceptions ). I hear IT is going to be adapted for the big screen. I hope its does a bit better than the mini series.
  13. melindaville
One of the best horror films I have ever seen is an old flick--from the 60's, I think, called 'Don't Look Now' starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Man, I had nightmares for years after seeing that one.

And of course, 'Silence of the Lambs' is very scary too!
  14. Sam1982
I like the ones like silence of the lambs because they're not far at all from being possible - they're a refection of the real monsters that walk the earth
    1. melindaville
      I concur!
  15. samureyed
    Older: Aliens

    Newer: The Descent

Slap Knee: Shaun of the Dead
  16. busylizzy
I like horror but not slasher movies. The first Alien movie really affected me. When saw the second one, I was so jumpy and nervous as soon as I sat down.
  17. Sam1982
I haven't had a movie do that since seeing "the entity" the original grudge movie is probably the closest
    1. Friday13
Ah, yes. The original grudge films are very good. I like just how much horror they got out of that small house.
  18. Sam1982
The croaking noise and the eyes of the black shadow that was hovering over the old woman in the begining as well as the cat noises were pretty creepy. Took me back to a personal experience so it hit a nerve big time.
    1. Friday13
That actress played the evil dead woman really well, with the crawling and croaking and all. Not wonder they had her play the part for all four films -- and the remakes (but I won't bother watching those). I like how the whole original "quadrology" ends ... evil daughter of doom!
  19. Sam1982
I dont think ive seen all four original films, only the first two. yeah the remakes are pretty much identical to the original anyway
    1. Friday13
Ah ... you must watch the other two! They were direct-to-video and released before the ones that (I think) you're talking about. There's this one school scene ... and then ... no spoiler

But here's a little something related to those two. Two really short stories that predate the original films:
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaQm2YhPAPc (In a Corner)
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPxuXP3BMwA (444-444-4444)

I'll have to watch that Entity thing.
  20. Sam1982
Cool I'll have to look at these later - work computer doesnt permit video watching. Damn IT Nazis!

The Entity is a pretty full on ghost/poltergiest movie, with some pretty unsettling music in some pretty intence scenes.
Funnily enough its tipped to be remade by none other than the director of the original grudge movies
  21. Sam1982
@busylizzy - no havent seen my name is bruce yet, Im not sure if our local blockbuster has it yet. Bubba Hotep is another good bruce campbell movie though
  22. MarzRingo
Most horror movies are awful. It's a shame because i really like the whole idea of it. I wish i lived in Hollywood sometimes because i honestly think i could make a kickass horror movie. Better than the trash we see nowadays anyway. The last horror movie that scared me was Pet Sematary, btw.
  23. Sam1982
    What would you differently?
  24. Stillthinking
I actually hated horror movies as a child. They made me sick-literally. I would throw up. As I got older though, I started daring myself to watch them. I still cringe, but now I find that I enjoy a good scare.

Of course, I define a good scare as psychological horror and old fashioned scary, not gorno or torture porn. Forget that, gross.

I thought "The Ring" was the best horror movie I had seen in years. It scared me silly but without gross, disgusting brain splatter.

I would also say "Sixth Sense" and "The Haunting", the original black and white version.

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" kept me up for days after I saw it.

I have seen "Aliens" three times and I still can't make it through the entire movie without covering my eyes and screaming.
  25. Sam1982
I think theres a fine line to the torture porn thing - I loved the hostel movies, but there are some really sick b-grades that almost look borederline snuff. I get sick to my stomach with those sorts.
  26. MarzRingo
    "What would you differently?"

I'd do things you haven't seen before. My inspiration would be my nightmares. I think there are certain visuals and certain themes that could really disturb people, but don't get explored enough. Most horror films, regardless of gore and shock scares, are just contrived and boring. Like i said, Pet Sematary and even The Shining had some good ideas.
  27. EmpressWingMay
"The Exorcist" still freaks me out. I heard it was based on a true story.
    1. legbamel
No, it was based on a novel. The book is better than the movie (there's a big shock), but you can't beat the creepy sound effects and pea soup for setting the mood.
  28. cheks900
the entity and evil dead!! I love those flicks
  29. educatedvagabond
The best? Impossible to decide! I've seen way too many horror movies to narrow it down. I'd have to narrow it down a little more to kinds of horror movies. I recently saw "Zombie Strippers" and that's the best B-movie horror film I've seen in a long time. The best foreign horror movie I've ever seen is the Italian "Killer Nun." And serial killer horror? I watched "Pathology" last night and loved it!
  30. Sam1982
Zombie movies are my personal favourite - havent seen zombie strippers yet but I do have a copy of it.
  31. Onchong
    Movie: Amityville Horror
    Book: The Serial Killers
  32. ThriftShopRomantic
One of my favorite horror films was actually a made-for-TV film in the 70s called "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." These scary little creatures live in the fireplace of this Victorian home, and the new owner, Sally, lets them out.

    www.imdb.com/title/tt0069992/

This thing scared the bejeebers out of me as a kid... so naturally I loved it.
    1. Sam1982
I haven't seen that but definately gonna take a look at it, sounds like I could draw a bit of inspiration from it.
  33. Seabuckthorn
Best movies: Jaws, The Shining, COMA, The Exorcist, The Ring, Frailty. Scariest: IT, which I can't explain; I was 22 at the time and it scared the crap out of me. I literally shuddered whenever I entered the bathroom for about 2 years. I was also pretty freaked out by that Karen Black made-for-TV trilogy, which I saw when I was about 8.

Books: The scariest horror book I ever read was The Wolfen. I loved COMA, all Dennis Wheatley's books on the occult, sci/fi horror books like The Presence, Jack London (his books were marketed as horror when I read them), Ghost Story by Peter Straub, and... I know there's more.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh yes-- the Trilogy of Terror. That one was pretty good.
    2. Seabuckthorn
@ThriftShopRomantic - it was reading your post that reminded me of it. We must be contemporaries? Both 8 years old in 1976 when there was nothing to do but watch weird TV on rainy Sunday afternoons?
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Very close-- I was five in '76, and yes, my misspent childhood definitely included a lot of watching creepy TV.

I often think about the stuff that was just on regular television as the Movie of the Week, and I don't think parents would let their kids watch that stuff these days. There were a lot of pretty intense horror films on.
    4. Seabuckthorn
@TSR: Yes I agree, it's an interesting change. I personally don't think I was harmed by it, but I do think there are some kids who can't handle that kind of stuff.
    5. ThriftShopRomantic
Yup, I didn't lose sleep over it either, and I think it probably gave me a better tolerance for scary stuff. But I had a friend who had a hard time with it.
    6. Seabuckthorn
@TSR, yeah, it was exactly the same for me. It certainly didn't desensitise me to bad things, and I agree, I certainly do have a high tolerance for stress, creepy or disgusting stuff, and scary situations. Don't know if it's a cause or effect connection, but...
  34. Sam1982
I think it desensitises to a certain degree, I can handle quite a bit but there are just some things that are deemed "too real" that i find quite disturbing. In particular those e-mails that get past around from time to time showing aftermaths of car accidents or construction work accidents. I think its all fun and games so long as at the back of your mind you know its not real.

    Movie Art of Devil II
  36. WinandSteal
I love horror movies but I rarely get scared when i'm watching them it's usually afterwards that I realise that it had affected me! I don't find slasher films scary I think they're funny more than anything (is that wrong? lol)I did feel a bit squeamish at certain parts of Hostel - the cutting the back of the ankle bit arrggghh - but I think I watch so many horror movies because I just want to find one that makes me jump so I'll be keeping track of this thread for some suggestions!
  37. LynneaUrania
Of course, there's the movie titled, "W."
  38. Sam1982
I'm not an american, nor have I seen that movie - but I think i speak for the rest of the world in saying that indeed "W" is a frightening concept.

Saw george romeros Diary of the dead last night - I hadn't heard many good things about it but being a fan of the "dead" series I thought i would give it a go. I was actually very impressed. I would put it up there with one of the better horrors I've seen recently.
