Hot Spiced Wine Recipe

Hot spiced wine is very easy to make. Provided you have 2 bottles of good dry red wine on hand, all you need to pull out of your cupboards is a large saucepan and a strainer, as well as, a measuring cup, wooden spoon and a sharp knife.

Ingredients

* 2 bottles of good dry red wine
* 1/2 cup water
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 4 sticks cinnamon
* 5 whole cloves
* 1 orange
* 1 lemon

Instructions

(1) Pour water into the saucepan and sit it on the stove burner.
(2) Add the sugar, cinnamon and cloves.
(3) Bring this to a slow boil for 5 minutes while stirring.
(4) Remove the saucepan from the hot burner and place it on a cold one.
(5) Pour the into the saucepan wine and stir.
(6) Slice the oranges and lemons into thin rings and add them to the saucepan.
(7) Place the saucepan on the burner again at a very low temperature setting and allow it to warm for about 40 minutes. (Whatever you do - do not boil.)
(8) Strain the orange and lemon rounds out of the wine and serve!

Discussion question:
If you have a recipe for a Christmas beverage to share (eggnog, punch, etc.) would you please post it here?

    This sounds perfect to go with a warm fireplace, softly playing music in the background, recliner, lap blanket and a good book.. ahhh!

      It's great for exactly what you describe.
      It's also good for serving at parties.

    I do a mulled cider by putting stick cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves into a loose tea infuser, heating that and adding a bit of rum. It's lovely.

      Ooh, that sounds good.

      I also have some apple cider and pear cider so I may try using them too but somehow black cherry sounds more appropriate for this season.

      The pear would probably be nice with the mulling spices, too.

    I'm using some of the pear cider to poach the pears and peaches that are going into the peach and pear pie. But I have lots on hand so I might mull some too.

    My favourite beverage at Xmas time is vodka mixed with brass polish which I drink from the bottom of an old sock I found so that I can filter out anything nasty that might have fallen into either the vodka or the metal polish.
    Well I say Xmas time...... I drink it most days, but at Xmas I drape tinsel over myself to make it more festive.
