For me:

1) I have definitely cut down on driving. Even short trips, like to the grocers, I walk nowadays.

2) I can't bear the sight of filling up a tank. So I usually only put in like a 1/3 of a tank.

3) The roads certainly seem to have less traffic here in Chicago, and I don't see as many SUVs or trucks.

4) I'm looking for a more fuel efficient car.

The beauty is it is only an 5 mile drive to work
The pain is it is 70 bucks to fill my car
I dont remember traffic - since I left NY
and I am in marathon training so eventually I can jog into work...

and I was serious about the gas Robin
    1. rainforestrobin
Okay Ben, all "gas" issues aside....I HAVE to ask...are you seriously in marathon training? That is VERY cool.

I'm an ex-New Yorker. From Brooklyn, Borough Park and Mill Basin. Now in Chicago.

Okay, all joking and Benny aside, maybe higher prices aren't so bad. Less pollution. People start to think before they all go in separate cars to the same place. People start thinking about alternative vehicles. Etc.
    1. BennyGreenberg
you have to convice the automobile industry that there is actually a problem
    2. richrf
I think Ford Motors recognizes the problem - but I bet that the CEO is still guzzling gas. He doesn't care - it just means that thousands of workers are going to be laid off because of gross mismanagement.
    3. rainforestrobin
I think many people in the auto industry know/see the problem but there is so much money involved in switching to the alternative...AND/OR....there is TOO much money being made in the way they are already doing it. I don't know enough about it but what do you think?

Agreed. Higher prices are going to stop all that waste.

Yesterday, I was putting some gas in the tank (only 3 gallons), and a young couple with a nice, big SUV, was cursing (loudly) their $100 (it was really $98) fillup. I guess now is the time to pay the piper - but I feel for the people who are really hurt by the prices, and had nothing to do with all those SUVs that wasted scarce resources.
    1. BennyGreenberg
It happened way before those peoples Navigator - they are just paying the price now
    2. richrf
Agreed. This has been building up for some time now. I read that the U.S. uses 44% of the world gas supply, with all of those huge cars that people are driving.
    3. BennyGreenberg
wait - here come the affluent in CHINA and India
    4. richrf
Yep, and they are just as capable of burning the gas as the affluent in the U.S. I wonder how long this is going to keep going like this, before people really get angry. Maybe a Democratic landslide this October?

Well I sold a kidney this week to fill up my tank,,what does that tell ya
    1. richrf
It's really awful. I can't stand watching that upper number twirling around while the lower number barely moves.
    2. BennyGreenberg
that you only have one left
  7. kat822
Yeah I am trying to figure out what internal organ I can spare next week, I think I am going to start selling my eggs
    1. globalgirl
      why not your body?
    2. kat822
You offering to be my pimp?
    3. globalgirl
Um, no. Eggs and kidney are more than enough.
  8. Anniepooh
I told the kids that their college funds were going directly into the tank. Having to drive to Philly every month or so is killing our gas budget, not to mention everything else going up in price because of it.

I try to make trips to several places all in one area of town. If I can shop closer to my house I do.
