Please take a look at my blog and tell me what is wrong. I'm new to blogging and I don't understand why I'm not getting the traffic. Is it my blog, I've been trying different things. Or is it something else that i'm not doing right. Please help me solve this. I appreciate all your help.

Thanks Kathy

Build it and your mother will come.

If you want ANYONE else to read it, you'll have to promote it. While content may be king, it's only king of the parts that keep folks coming back. Self promotion is what gets them there in the first place.

Assuming you are using a decent ap, like WP, MT, BS and the like, some of the basics are taken care of for you, but you still need to:

    submit your feed.

    submit your blog.

leave links wherever you can, but preferably on paths your audience walks on.

Comment on related blogs and give them GREAT CONTENT FOR THEIR BLOGS.

    Exchange articles with other bloggers.

Do a tips article that takes a brief tip from each of 3-5 of your posts. Make a page linking out to those posts, post the article to article directories and link back to that page.

buy traffic from google, yahoo, MSN BlogCatalog and many many others.

compile 8-12 of your posts into a short PDF report and upload it for free to places like scribd, internet archive, and any free ebook directories you can find.

Write a few fresh new articles, compile them into a PDF and let a couple of other bloggers give it away for free to their readers.

Write a hot report and give it away on your blog. then use all of the methods above and below to promote THAT page on your blog.

whenever possible do NOT link to your blogs home page, link directly to an article page that you think people reading the link would like most.

Post links to your category and tag pages in forums. First give a Killer awsome cool great answer to a question related to your blog, and finish off by letting people know they can find lots more related info in the articles listed on your tag page.

Use your SU BLOG. Actually blog stories related to your blog there. Then link out to your blog and a couple of other peoples blogs. Same thing with ebay, facebook, myspace and any other site like that. Especially if you can find some that are directly related to your blog.

This should keep you busy for a couple of hours. If you complete this list in a week or so, start over and do it again. If you STILL aren't getting any traffic, you really are the ONLY person interested in your topic and you should start blogging about something else.

Ummmmm.... It's been a while, so....
[disclaimer] the last sentence was funny. really, read it again. [/disclaimer.

Find someone who is already linking to your blog and Do everything in this list to promote THEIR post.

Sorry to dig up an old topic. As an analytical type of person I would want to know if there is anything that focuses on a straight science for website promotion, because a lot of sources I've read approach promotion as an art.

Most of your points are very specific, which is the type of advice I am looking for. I like seeing things as a science, knowing that everything you set in a certain manner will almost always guarantee the same results.

    Hi ccRicers,

To some extent it is an art, but there are a lot of things that are scientifically applied to any art.

Mixing just the right chemicals to get just the right greenblue is a science, applying that pigment to the canvass... well, theres the spark of creation.

All of the things I listed can help you and you can follow them like a recipe. Some will work better for YOU than others because you will naturally enjoy them more.

But, of course, if you artistically chose to write a blog about "The weekly removal of Carter Devlin Jacobs from Puskamatoo, AK, nose and ear hair" the science is just going to allow you to smear a perfectly crafted color about the place if you take my meaning.

If your blog is new, you probably won't get much traffic. It takes a while for search engines to crawl your pages and other bloggers to find you and reference your articles.

Also, if you do not have many posts yet - or all of you posts or on a narrow range of topics - there are will not be many opportunities for people to stumble across you blog while searching the web.
    1. DaneMorgan
There will be just as many opportunities to stumble upon your links as you put links out there.

The whole point is to STOP being passive and go get your readers. Put your lemonaid stand where the people are thirsty, don't put it any ole wheres and hope thirsty people come looking for you.

Hope is not a course of action.

Agreed. The best approach is to actively seek readers. However, if you have a lot of high-quality, interesting posts, some readers will naturally trickle in in addition to the ones that you get through active promotion.
