How Can We Improve Presidental Campaigns

Topics: ethics in presidential campaigns, influence of media on politics, negative campaign ads
Most folks expressed their frustration about the nature (nastiness) of the presidential campaign this year, and the amount of inaccurate information, not to mention misinformation. Any suggestions as to how we might improve on the system? Obviously relying on the traditional news media does not work, and the campaigns themselves do not appear to be interested in self-policing, but rather winning at any costs? What can we do to improve the situation?

FWIW if you had clicked the link that staff provided then this post would now be in the correct forum. As it stands now e have to report it to Admin to have it moved. -
There are some tough lessons to be learnt here on BC... I'm just getting to grips with it (having not read the 'Read this before posting' post). Believe me when I say read that post first. Otherwise you'll find yourself in the line of fire and that fire might not be as direct as RTB was - that was kind.

Yeah, it should be on the political board - but it is a very good question and discussion topic. You can send a shout to TonyB or thegoodknife, and they will move the discussion to the political board for you.
To answer your question - I think a few things would need to change to change the overall tone - or ability to get nasty during the race.
For one thing, it needs to be shorter, the whole thing. If it were a shorter period of time, the candidates would have less time to raise money, and thus, less money to and time to spend on negative campaigning, and would be forced to focus on campaigning their platform instead. (No guarantees of course, but getting out your own policies and platform would help you get elected more so than spending every dime on smears).
I also think that reworking the electoral college - or voting system in general would help stop the nasty campaigning in battleground states. Candidates would have to focus more, and prepare more to get to more states to gain support, thus reducing the amount of time and effort spent on smears.
That's for starters

Interesting. Probably the most effective thing that we can do is to alter the mindset of the voting public. By that, I mean improving education. I would venture to say that better educated people are more likely to disregard negative campaigning and focus on the real issues. The more discriminating (in terms of info) and sophisticated our voters, the less likely that crap and soundbites will affect then. The answer to many problems is education. Always has been, always will be.

Just this morning on fox news they mentioned the possibility of Sarah Palin choosing Dr Doc © (dlcs) as her running mate next election and we all know with his political background and world clout, they will be the team to beat, except the media will destroy them with mockery.
