How did you come up with your child/children’s name(s)?

This is how I came up with my baby girl’s name:

My daughters first name I invented, her second name my wife chose for her sister's second name.

    K'tala Dawn Morgan

With the boy, I completely lost the battle and got to assign neither of the names. I wanted Aiden Connor Morgan

    Devan Levi Morgan
    1. gerri50
K'tala I like, it is very different. How did it come about?

And losing the battle with your son's name, how did that go down with you at the time?

My daughter's dad had an elementary school classmate with a beautiful Hawaiian name we both loved, so we named our daugther after her.

We couldn't agree on a name for my son. We were going to name him Ian. Then a week before he was born, my ex husband decided it was too common, so we named him a name that neither one of us was that crazy about. Of course, it suits him now. Boys names are so difficult. My preference was to name him Christian, but we couldn't agree on it.

If we do have a son I hope we don't run into problems trying to name him with the way you are saying naming boys isn't easy.

Each of my girls has a Greek first name and then a middle name from their fathers' side of the family.

My eldest is Zoe Alyssa which, loosely translated, means Life Without Madness in Greek. My youngest is Helena Shae which, loosely translated, means Light and Magical in Greek.
    1. calais50
Helena was one of the top names in the running for my daughter. I considered Zoe and Chloe too.
    2. gerri50
I like the meaning of Helena. When you say light do you mean the light we see? My daughter's second name Chiedza is a Shona one and it means Sunshine, Sunrise, Light - depending on how you look at it.

A friend at work was talking about one of her friends and I heard the name of her friend and loved it..Kiersten (sounds like K ear sten) my ex-husband picked out my sons name he always loved the name Preston..when I got married to my now hubby I wanted to stick with the same kinda names..Tristan we both just loved and Sebastian was the hardest..finally agreed on that one at the last minute! They all have the same ending sounds..yes I know...but I like it that way!

CreativeJunkie, my daughter's name is Zoe, too. I love that Zoe means life.

I'm kind of an excel formula geek: My husband and I bought a big book of names and read through it separately and marked any names that we liked even a little. Then I put all the names in an excel spreadsheet. Then we each went through the spreadsheet and gave each name a rank of 1 - 4, 1 meaning I will fight for this name, 4 meaning, no way will this name be used. Zoe was the only name that we both ranked 1, but that seemed too easy. So then I created a formula to rank the names based on both of our rankings, from there we narrowed the list to about a dozen names. Then Zoe was born a month early and in the hospital, we had to quickly run through the names and settled on Zoe. Her middle name is Martha after my husband's grandma.

Annz -- that is truly the most mathematical system I have ever heard for naming a child.

and by mathematical, I mean, well, I think you know what I mean.
    2. gerri50
WOW!! Lost for words there. That is the most unique method I have seen someone use to come up with a name.
  6. MidwestMom
We chose our boys names by their meaning.

For our girls' names, we originally chose Eleanor, a family name that means 'light'. But then, we realized that her nickname could be Ellie, and that would make her Ellie Kelly. Not good. Then my son(age 4) and I were gardening, and the flowers were in full bloom. He suggested that we name our daughter after one of the most beautiful ones. The sweetness of that name stuck with us. And so we used it to name our baby.
    1. gerri50
      Very nice!

I chose based on meaning and namesake.

Anthony Damon Thaddeus _________________ is Anthony = Priceless, praiseworthy (also my dads name) Damon= Constant (in greek legend spared after a demonstration of true friendship) Thaddeus = heart (and is also my brothers name) so my oldest is a praisworthy, constant, full of heart person.

Nicholas Aidan Alexander ______________ is Nicholas = Leader of Victorious people Aidan= Little fire Alexander= Defender of mankind so my baby is leading victorious people with his little fire defneding mankind. I chose his name because there were so many complications with his birth that most thought he would die but his fighting spirit was so high that above all odds he flourished and came out swinging
    1. gerri50
Meaning played a big part in naming my daughter.

For my first son (Randy) - I named him in honor of Sgt. First Class Randall Shughart - who I remember seeing being drug through the streets of Mogadishu posthumously after the Black Hawk Down fiasco in '93.

It wasn't until around '96 when I started reading "vignettes" by eventual auther of the BHD book, Bowden, about what had happened that I learned that he had volunteered for about as sure a suicide mission as you can get.

Long story short - he knew that Mike Durant's crashed chopper was about to be set on by hundreds of militia, so he and his partner Gary Gordon requested 5 times to be inserted into the crash site to defend the perimeter.

Finally the request was granted, and Shughart/Gordon defended the crash site until essentially they ran out of ammo and were overrun, killed, and their bodies butchered as trophies.

I thought to myself "dang - that guy had courage" - and courage is a trademark that I've always thought helps define ideal manhood. I'm a spiritual person and I do believe there is something to naming people. I thought if perhaps a small bit of that man's essence could be imparted into my son by naming him in his honor, that I'd be doing good for him.

There was also a football coach of mine with the name "Rand" - which ironically is exactly what we call "Randy" - who was a major influence in my life. It's partly in his honor as well.

Then there's my whole mini-obsession with wolves (I've talked about this here many months ago) and their role in my dreams/subconscious. Believe it or not, Randall means "wolf shield." Kinda freaky - but altogether fitting and proper as well.

Isn't that wonderful the way names you've chosen for another reason can have a completely relevant meaning? Our first son's middle name came from my husband's grandfather, with whom he was very close growing up. The name is William.

As we've had more children, my oldest has truly grown into the model of the "big brother", sticking up for his younger brother and sister and teaching them. William means 'protector' -- it couldn't be more fitting.

btw -- I love the courageous story you tell about the name Randy. But I understand that 'Randy' also means something akin to 'horny' in Australian slang... look out when your son gets to be a teenager... Courageous and horny are a dangerous combination.
    2. gerri50
That was a very noble gesture. Your son will have a story to tell when asked how his parents came up with his name.
  9. Katuluu
I named him Rikki Tikki Tembo No Sah Rembo Chari Bari Rucci Pip Perri Pembo.

If he falls in a well... screw him. Survival of the fittest.
    1. gerri50
      I'm lost here..................????
    2. Katuluu
Google it. I refuse to explain teh funny.

Googling it actually points back to this thread. And this thread only. Where's teh funny?!

My hubby & I totally agreed on all 3 of our daughters names (very rare, I hear). Our first daughter wasn't even conceived yet when we just loved the name Lexi. Our 2nd daughter was picked out, but we changed it 3 mos. before she was born. We are big on meanings of names.
Alexis=defender of mankind, Marie (after my mom).
Petra-cliff that the rock dwells in (Christ is our Rock), Nichole=leader of victorious people
and our 3rd daughter, Nova=new beginning or burst of energy, Raine=helpful friend.
    1. gerri50
WOW!! You agreed on all three names? And you even had you first daughter's name even before she was conceived? Now that's special.
Girls grow into their names huh? I need to take a step back and have a thing about my daughter and the meanings of her names. One thing for sure with her second name is that she is my sunshine.
  12. heatherschwartz1
One more thing. It is amazing to watch our girls grow into their names.
Lexi is so compassionate to hurting people & her desire (already at age 4) is to help anyone she can (except Mommy of course). She wants to take everyone's pain away.
Petra (at age 3) IS a rock right now! Hard to move her willfulness! But she already sings songs of Jesus living in her heart.
Nova is only 6 mos. old, but is everyone's friend. She can make a very bad day turn beautiful with just a toothless grin & a giggle!

I picked my daughter's name Jessamyn, after the author Jessamyn West. It's the old English version of Jasmine that's traditionally spelled Jessamine but I figured people would mispronounce it that way. They still do. How you get Jasmine out of a phonetically spelled name like Jessamyn I don't understand. She wasn't supposed to be a girl. She was supposed to be a boy named Josiah, which came to me in a dream. I looked the name up in the bible and found that he was the king that wiped out idol worship and I was all set. I refused to look at other names. Her dad insisted that I pick a girl's name just in case. I did with no thought in how closely tied Jessamyn is to my name, Rosalind. They are both literary, flower names with 8 letters. And people always misprounounce mine as well.

My wife wanted to honor two of her deceased grandparents; Ralph and Ann. In her tradition, any name with the same first letter counts as honoring someone. We stretched a bit and looked up the meaning of Ralph. I don't remember what the meaning was but it also meant the same thing as Alexandra. So "Alexandra" means the same as "Ralph" and has the first letter of "Ann".

All of three of my kids middle name is my wife's maiden name.

He had to run through a bunch of names and try out how they sounded in both German and English. Finally settled on a simple one that was different. Of course, a few years later we found out a bunch of other people went for the same solution.
  16. DocNicole
I think Nicole is the perfect name for anyone's baby!
    1. annz
Nicole was my middle name (I dropped it when I got married and took my husband's last name as my middle name). I've always liked it. My mom said she wanted me to have two very different names that were still short and easy to spell (because my last name is long and not easy to spell) so that if I didn't like one, I could use the other.

Naming the child for the grandfather is an Italian thing, and the grandfather's name was Anthony. I had a dream of a baby dedication and our pastor was explaining the baby's name was Dominick, "not because he was named for his earthly father, but because he belongs to his heavenly Father." This dream occurred almost 5 years before the baby was actually born. At the time, I didn't know that Dominick means "belongs to the Lord", which he does.

When it was getting to be time for the baby to be born, my mother-in-law didn't want us to name him after my father-in-law (long story)OR Dominick since she had been strongarmed into naming my husband Dominick. So we got into an argument about that. Finally I told her I could either name the baby Dominick Anthony, or we could name him after MY grandfather and father and call him Kusiel Isaac.

She did not complain when we named the baby Dominick Anthony. Dominick also means "born on Sunday", which he was. And Anthony was for the grandfather. Rest in peace, Dad.
