Discussions

This is my first discussion posting, so please forgive me if I "F" it up. I'm really curious about what other humor writers are doing to attract followers to their blogs. I have a Facebook fan page, I'm on Twitter, and I update my blog, on average, every couple of days. Anything I may have missed?

Thanks in advance.

Be funny and do it consecutively. That should really be the big draw for humor blogs, I think. Humor blogs do well with word of mouth...provide your readers tools to easily do things like subscribe to your blog and send your posts to their friends.

Thanks for the feedback. It clearly takes time and patience. I check about 35,000 times a day to see if anyone knew is a Facebook fan or a follower of my blog.
    2. GabrielGadfly
There's part of your problem. Stop worrying about statistics and focus on writing good content. Limit yourself to checking once a day to see if anyone new has arrived.

Have you been commenting on other humour blogs?
    1. brianomaracroft
I just started doing that recently.
    2. crpitt
That usually helps, but it takes time.
    3. brianomaracroft
      Thanks for the suggestion.
    4. crpitt
You could also submit to the dreaded humorbloggers site?
    5. brianomaracroft
Does that help? Or does that end up being a "needle-in-haystack" scenario?
    6. crpitt
You would have to get in first, they are rather particular.
    7. brianomaracroft
Okay. I'll check it out. Thanks again.

      it's so obvious...
    3. Rhettlyle12
      don't you feel wiser?
    4. brianomaracroft

Also starting discussions like this or just commenting. Everytime you comment your name is a link. People will click on it like I did and think your writing is great. You just got another follower who would never have found you had you not posted your question here.
    1. brianomaracroft
Thanks much...for the advice and the follow.

Thanks much...I just submitted to humorbloggers...I'll check out the rest.
    2. dbowles1017
You might get rejected from humorbloggers. I dont know if you have enough entries
    3. brianomaracroft
Awesome...I do rejection all the time.
  7. JoelKlebanoff
Actually, it's quite easy. Watch what I do then do the opposite.

Sad to say pinkmonkeychatter but Cat Farts! was my biggest post to date. I think you have something there

      So I've heard...thanks

Keep SEO indexing in mind when you write your post titles. This helps getting Google folks in who are looking for the funny on a particular subject.

Humorbloggers is a really helpful community, if your blog is accepted. And I'm seeing more response from Facebook lately.
    1. brianomaracroft
Thanks...what's the easiest way to do this?
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
Which-- the keyword insertion in your titles, getting people to your Facebook page, or Humorbloggers?
    3. brianomaracroft
I'm not all that familiar with SEO indexing (which is my way of saying "I have no idea" while still sounding marginally informed)
    4. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh, really what I was meaning was-- sometimes you have a choice between a clever title, or choosing a title that has more keywords in it, which Google users might be searching for.

While it might be better for your post to choose the clever title, it'll be better for your search engine traffic if you can get more keywords into it. Because Google uses title words as part of the way they index posts' subject matter.
    5. brianomaracroft
      Gotcha...good suggestion...thanks much.
    6. crpitt
Anything with 'blow up doll' in the title seems to do well.
    7. brianomaracroft
So, instead of "Lost in the Hive", I should name it, "Lost in the Blow-Up Doll?"
    8. crpitt
      Well if you like....

I meant for next post title Your posts are the fresh content that attracts google, so that is were you can be creative and take advantage of what you think is popular or what is current in the news.
    9. brianomaracroft
      Very good point, thanks.

I'm no expert, having a whopping 42 followers myself (each of whom I GREATLY appreciate!) but you might want to try shorter posts. Blog readers tend to have pretty short attention spans. On the other hand, you are very funny so you might want to just carry on. It does take time to build a following.
    1. brianomaracroft
Thanks for the tip, and for the compliment.

Another good method is to start guest posting on other blogs...even ones that aren't humor blogs. Other "serious" might enjoy lightening the mood with a guest humor post.

Don't be afraid to ask other bloggers if you could guest post. Ultimately, like any blog, building a strong following takes time and dedication. If you interact in other bloggers' comments and communities, many will interact in your as well.

    Good luck!

Sometimes just tell things as they are. Life is fulled with humor, I found by just writing about my own experiences from my sometimes off perspective helps, but then again your readers should share your sense of humor.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
"Your readers should share your sense of humor"
Agreed, and I think that's what really takes the patience.

If your sense of humor is of the LOLCat variety, typically that traffic is easy to get. But if it's a little more subtle, or relies on folks reading...

You can draw in those readers, absolutely. But it takes more time for the people who share your humor to find you. (Or vice versa)
    2. cuteptaguy
True, especially because I have a niche blog. Luckily I also have many heterosexual readers ;-)

I have another question, a variation on my first--if you have a Facebook fan page, what have some of you done to attract fans to that page?
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I don't have a fan page, just a... er... regular person page.

I'd be interested in knowing whether folks with fan pages see any clicks to their stuff as compared to just regular Facebook pages.
    2. brianomaracroft
I think part of the appeal is that if you become well-known (a pipe dream for most of us), you can have a great many more friends/fans and can still control some of the access people have to your more personal info. I mean, does someone who reads my book really want to see photos of me cavorting in the snow in my underwear?

(The answer is no...even my friends are a trifle rattled).
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
I thought the underwear in snow photos would be a part of a centerfold spread...

But I know, I know, photo printing costs money.
    4. crpitt
oooooooooooooooh snow angels too I hope?

      Erm what?

I have a kind of "out there" since of humor and sometimes after I post on a taboo subject, one of my personalities steps in and asks me if i've really thought about what i'm posting - so i just shut her out and ask for my obsequeitous personality to come kiss my ass - he does, then i post. Seriously, I have done a few posts on the subject of STD dating (bad i know but its just they looked so DANG happy to have an STD when i came across the dating site i couldn't help but jump on the bandwagon) - Those posts are quite popular for some reason (i prefer to think people findit funny, not that the whole world has contracted some "bug")so maybe the people that return to my blog are connected to me by herpes...LOL and people are STILL hitting my blog on ONE POST- its STILL getting 50 or so hits a day (that's huge for me) and since 7/31 its gotten almost 2700 hits on people looking up std's alone...If you laugh at yourself too (which we all should) it seems to connect people too you. I've read your blog, you're talented and have a sublime since of humor! You'll do well..
