How do I get a link from a big blog and have them send traffic my way?

I just heard Leo Babauta (Zen Habits-Write To Done) live online -- writetodone.com/2008/11/20/ask-leo-live-qa-for-bloggers-and-writers/#commen...
He responded to one of the questions by saying, "But here's what works better: get a link from a big blog and have them send traffic your way..." -- it got me to thinking that there are some really smart people in and around BC, so let me hear the best advice you've got. Hi there. You will need to establish a habit of leaving many meaningful comments on the posts in a "big blog" directly related to your own in order to secure the attention of a blogger who has hundreds of thousands of hits and reams of comments each day. When you do secure that interest the blogger will visit your site and look at your posts to find one that he or she can backlink to. I think that you will benefit from reading these posts

Or you can simply ask my friend. It also depends on what you mean by big. Google Rank a factor in that? If so, I've got two blogs that are PR3, not big, but gettin there. Oh even better. You can buy your links for 1 or 2 dollars monthly at backlinks.com, you'll find my site there.
