I recently started a blog on http:/transcentity.blogspot.com and want to get my own domain name. What do I do?
Also would it be a good idea to switch to wordpress? I heard it's better in several ways but I have no knowledge of even the most basic HTML or CSS.

If you wish to switch to wordpress then you can download free software here wordpress.ORG and you will find recommended web hosts here wordpress.ORG/hosting
There are also many other web hosts but do be sure that the ones you hire have the requirements you need. They are found here wordpress.org/about/requirements/
I recommend watching the free tutorial videos here

Also be aware that some bloggers start out on free hosted blog platforms like wordpress.com or blogspot (Blogger) on a test basis. They plan to establish traffic, purchase a domain and then to switch over to paid hosting.
Well, the Technorati Authority and Rank as well as the Google Page Rank belong to the sub-domain url for your blog.
If purchase a domain and export your blog contents out of your blogspot blog into a new wordpress install those will disappear unless you also purchase domain mapping.
If you do NOT purchase domain mapping then the Technorati Authority and Rank as well as the Google Page Rank will disappear and it will usually take about 4 - 6 months, provided your readers follow you to the new domain, to re-establish them. -
You are best off to purchase your Domain name through GoDaddy, or Name.com. This way you own the name (as long as you pay for it) and can host it wherever you like.
Paid hosting... I would recommend HostGator. Their "Baby" package gives you pretty much unlimited everything for under $10 per month.
If you are looking to go the free route, I would say Byethost.com is probably the best free hosting around (no forced ads)
Either way, WordPress is included with both hosts. All you need to do is use their "Fantastico" installer to install. Very easy and only takes minutes. -
Switching is harder than starting fresh. Since your blog is new, see if you can absorb the loss and start with a self-hosted Wordpress blog.

Actaully that isn't the case. You aren't required to be adept in HTML or CSS to be a wordpress blogger. WordPress has both a visual and an HTML editor. There are plenty of free wordpress themes that do validate and that do not require "doctoring". There are online tutorials that you can use to learn the minor amount of HTML and CSS you may want to know.

Nevermind, I forgot the DNS took a while to be resolved. I successfully got a domain and host and uploaded wordpress and started the blog. (www.transcentity.org)
I'll finish up tomorrow since it's getting late. Thanks for the help, especially you timethief :). I think switching to WP was the better option. I'll simple copy and paste my posts from blogger to my new blog.
Goodnight!-
You don't need to copy and paste. You can export your posts out of your Blogger blog and import them into your wordpress blog. You can also export and import your blogroll links.
This is a link to the wordpress.COM FAQs instructions for importing, however, you will find the same instructions apply to your wordpress.ORG install as well
