How do I make Money blogging?

Topics: blogging for money, selling blog posts
I see this question up here frequently along with the same answers. Well, I found an article I thought I'd share which gives some good info about how much you'd have to write if you wanted to make money by blogging alone (not counting advertising, etc.)
I found it interesting. It's a lot of writing to make a good living and you have to be able to sell your posts.
How many people try to sell their posts? How many think it's feasible to make a living this way? How many think they could do it?

I'd have a better chance of running across a dead hooker with purple toenails than I would making money with my blog.
-
You should put up a donation link. I'm thinking about doing that. It's going to contribute towards my effort to making the world's largest pancake.
-
I saw the world's largest pancake griddle one time in Penn Yan, NY. www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/15684

See, this is why I'm not good at that sort of thing. I promote during times when I am fighting for a cause but that's about it. I have Amazon and a few other things but I shrug it off and not real concerned about it.
Now, if I could figure out how to make cakes from home and sell them without doing something illegal I would invest my time on that. Blog promotion isn't something I care much about.-
I didn't know making cakes was illegal... You know, you could use "word of mouth" advertising through friends and stuff to make a few dollars on the side. Just don't advertise your business "publicly" until you get a business license because your city will want to shut you down and charge you sales taxes.
-
- In Canada one has to have a government inspected kitchen that's certified as a commercial kitchen in order to start selling to the public. Basically it's all about health issues. The owners and operators and any staff must be properly trained in government run food handling and preparation programs. Also the equipment and cleaning has to be up to standards to prevent the sale of contaminated food that can harm others. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the same where you live too.
-
that isn't exactly commercial activity, per se
For instance if you washed cars for people as a business you would be expected to have a business license, abide by ocupational safety regulations etc.
Whereas if you siply had a fundraiser with cheerleaders washing cars and getting all sudsy in their tank tops and shorts and spraying each other with...
...um what were we talking about again?

Well since my blog is based on content and keywords, I've been using InfoLinks to generate some revenue.
If you're interested in checking it out: www.infolinks.com
It's a PPC inline text advertising that shows relevant adverts based on keywords on specific page and which category you have your site in. -

- lol ... I just read Lorelle's article on my feedreader. I think your posting the link here is a good idea.
Questions:
(1) How many people try to sell their posts?
I haven't a clue. I don't try sell any posts but I have been paid to write in the past, and I'm being paid to write now, although it's not on blogs.
I have also noticed that many other bloggers do sell their posts. In fact, I have seen the same old 300 - 500 word blah, blah, blah content they are paid to write on multiple sites.
(2) How many think it's feasible to make a living this way?
I think it's feasible to make a living from blogging because I'm aware that there are already bloggers who do so.
(3) How many think they could do it?
Without getting into any details I don't think I could do it;
I know I could, but I don't want to.-
Well getting paid to write, no matter where it is is very nice. I too think it's feasible to do, but I think far too many who try think it will be easy, but churning out 3 quality posts daily all year long doesn't sound easy to me.
I know money could also be made from ads, speaking, etc. but basing it strictly on blog posts it would be a lot of work.

Quotes like these by Lorelle .. really irk me .. just because you know how to make spreadsheets on excel doesn't mean much to me - I can create spreadsheets too. It's a different world out there - this isn't PRE-internet anymore - The people who claim to be making these high amounts per post are not telling you one of three things..
1) when they were receiving that
2) that it's not usually recurring even if they did luck out and get something that pays that good
3) the high pay is a blended model of pay and depends on other issues attached to it, that may be hypothetical and never reaching (eg traffic bonuses, sliding rates, etc)
anyway .. that's what I think but, I'm too close to the other side - for my blog network, i try to avoid "freelancers" and just work with "bloggers". Very few freelancers can take that leep and always stuck in this type of mindset - it's not good for blogging i.m.h.o.
If you are paid $100.00 per post and it takes you two hours to develop the concept, research the story and materials, write the post, edit it, prepare it for publishing, find an image to accompany the post, publish it, then respond to comments and maintain the post over time, and include time for networking and promotion, you would be paid $50.00 an hour, a much more reasonable rate for an expert blogging specialist.
and
If you want to blog for a living, don’t take just any blogging job or low paying jobs. It isn’t worth it. Get paid what you are worth so every blogger within the industry can get a chance to make a decent living and not be undercut by those blogging for $5 a post. Consider your expertise and ask for what you deserve. -
I'm not going to tell you how much I make blogging. But what I will say is that it took me about 6 months to figure out that you can make money. It just takes a lot of time, discipline, and work. I now have 11 blogs. Some are complete failures and some are doing pretty darn good.
Let me briefly explain what I mean by: Time Discipline and Work
You can't expect positive results when you blog if all you do is type up a few hundred words and throw it up on the internet. There are hundreds of people that blog and talk about keyword research. Do you do keyword research before you type up a post? I spend a good hour or two on keyword research before I even think about writing anything. Do you know why? If you don't then you will never make money online.
After I post a new blog entry I spend a few hours everyday for a week or two trying to get relevant backlinks pointing to the new post. Do you know why? If you don't then you will never make money online.
I read seo blogs. I read wordpress blogs. I read everything and anything that I think can help me become a better blogger. And most importantly I put what I learn into practice. Do you? If you don't then you will never make money online.
Also for all of you that think you can't make money blogging or make money at home or on the internet you might want to check out about.com which is owned by the NY Times. Here is a link:
beaguide.about.com/
They certainly are saying that you can make money blogging. And pretty good money.
There are always some people who are willing to go the extra mile or two in order to be successful. And there are always people who are more than willing to spend their time and use all of their energy trying to convince you that it is impossible to succeed. Usually they can't succeed at making money online so they think it is not possible for anybody to make money online.
I will admit a lot of people are dishonest about making money online and how much they make, but that does not mean there are not people doing rather well.-
good advice! and, congrats if you are making money too!
Here's my favorite quote from Lorelle's post ..
Professional bloggers make money generating content on their own blogs combined with direct and indirect income sources such as advertising, speaking, ebooks, product sales, and consulting.
People wanting to "make money blogging" and think this is freelancing and just writing - will never make a living blogging. Blogging is everything - whatever works - all the time - from every angle... and always a learning curve and, yes .. especially what PotatoChef said .. it takes "Time Discipline and Work" -
Good points, if you treat it as a full time job and are professional, do all the research and work then I can see making money. But it's a job and you need to produce quality work and put the time and effort in.
What I have run into are people who seem to think they can get rich quick through blogging and Adsense clicks and that is absolutely not true.
My blog had a comment to the effect of "nice blog, come see mine and clik and I'll return and we can make $100 m a day." This is why I moderate and approve all comments before the post as I don't want that junk on my blog. Really???
So do people really think that they can get rich with some mediocre blog from ad clicks???? No WAY!

@Diane
- Sadly there are many people who have been duped into believing they can become adsense millionaires. This is despite the fact that they have no expertise in any niche and cannot write. The truth is very few bloggers have the degree of expertise required to produce content that brings in the massive number of hits on advertisements that are required to make a living from blogging. But there are many who refuse to accept the truth.

@theshutterbugeye Good for you. Violating Google's TOS is not a good idea. In the long run (probably in the shor run also) it probably wouldn't pay off anyhow.
-
Yea, I actually removed adsense a couple days ago. It doesn't really fit with my blog goals (I want people to click on my store, not someone elses web shop for photos which is what the ads are- for penies a click people can leave my site???) and it seemed to attract more of those kinds of comments. Google can keep the 80 cents I had earned from ad clicks.
