I have an idea for selling a product online. I don't have much cash to start with - anyone know the best free websites that I can set up myself that will offer product order and payment facilities?

(at the moment I use office live small business for my personal site www.jaine.info)

You're a painter hence I do recommend you to visit www.etsy.com/

Etsy is a very respectful online store and it is full with creative folks selling their self made crafts.

Another one that you I recommend to visit is www.artbank.com/

Etsy is a very well-known website. I am not really sure with Artbank.

Nonetheless it is worth to check Artbank. Artbank is a website where you can purchase and sell your art.

@jjmezzio I want to set up my own shop - not visit others. And I am not selling my art at this stage, not online anyway. Thanks for the links but.

@Nomadic, jjmezzio means you can go to those websites to sell your own artwork Etsy really is a good site for doing that.

Yeah I had a look. I like. Not what I need right now. I take commissions and don't really commercially market my art work.

Free Online Store Setup using Google Base & Checkout. It seems to be a service that makes buying and selling across the web fast, convenient, and secure.

www.bigcartel.com has a free store that you can set up. You are limited to 5 items with this option, but if you really like it or have more than 5 items you can always upgrade your account.

@kirewass - great! Thanks. Google are cool so I am glad they have something, I will check it out.
@centric, probably more than 5 items but thanks anyway x

@kirewass - first snag - I am not in the US so cannot do it. Shame.

      Fab! Thanks!

Because it is 5 items Polybore suggests that you sign up with the ebay partner network. ebaypartnernetwork.com/

Using this you can embed ebay ads on your website (or your blog) which link directly to items you are selling (buy it now or auction). Ad includes picture price etc, I've tried it out before and it is straight forward to do.

This way you can let ebay handle the payment, P&P etc and because the item is on ebay you have access to a market other than that which visits your website.

Now there's a thing. I hadn't thought of that one. Don't think it might cheapen the brand a little? I will look into it.

PS - Just sold my land rover on ebay to someone who sounds like a bit of a chancer.

It was not me, honest. You have Polybore's deepest sympathies for your loss, but you will always have the memory of that smell, that time the door shut on you, the time you hit a speed bump too fast and hit your head on the roof etc.

I set up a products page on my blog site to sell some of my recycled bag items. I use Google Checkout for payments which works out very well for me as people can pay with credit cards and Google's fees are very low for the service. If you set up your own site, you will save over eBay, Paypal, and other 3rd party fees that just take away from your profits.

Love your bags Cindy! Thanks for the tip.

I will check them out too thanks....looks like I have a lot of research to do.

Probably one of the best sites for auction sellers or even storefront sellers is www.auctionbytes.com/
