Just curious to get others' thoughts about blogger-to-blogger Awards.

Do you feel "honored" by some more than others?

Do you get the feeling that some of them are more like chain letters than "awards"?

Have you ever declined an award?

Thoughts on blogger awards in general?

I just received my first one and although it did seem a little "chain letter-ish," I was happy to accept it and pass it along.

Yes, thanks for the chain letter award. I will not put up the tea cup or whatever that prize was, although thanks for the mention (especially with Claire).

Seems strange that it was Time Thief that sent that to you. Exactly the opposite of what she preached, and surely she was not a sucker for that pass it on stuff.

I love them! Would love to win one and give one away.

Same here, although comments are very welcome.

Awards are nice, but only if you don't have to work to get them. Meaning the whole "chain mail" thing.

They're not even meant to be awards. They're a system of generating links that works in part because many bloggers who receive them are "honored" and think something of value has been bestowed on them.
    1. DailyBeerReview
I think there could be legitimate awards, but yes, usually link building is behind that kind of stuff.

BTW, It wasn't given by another blogger, but did you hear that I won the Nobel Prize in Gardening?
    3. MadameX
Did it require a link back to their home page?
    4. DailyBeerReview
Those dudes in Norway don't need links, they are giving away million dollar prizes, although my experimental Nobel didn't come with quite that amount.

All of them? I've learned to be a bit cautious about generalizations.

I think I know what you mean, though.

Norski, what I meant to say is that what I described is at the root of the creation of the "pass it along" awards. I don't doubt that many are given in all sincerity, but they were invented as a means of gathering links.

      MadameX,

Got it. I found "pass-it-along awards" defined in a comment on a blog post ( dayinthelifeofagirlnamedkimber.blogspot.com/2009/06/check-this-out.html ) as 'tag-you're-its' - if that's the only sort of blogger-to-blogger award that exists, I think you're on the right track.

great, then actually i'm going to give you the one that miss suzie gave me today. And Brad Pitt (I mean Derek B), too, for that argument about 2 or 3 beers.

We've received some well intentioned awards. However, we didn't reciprocate the way we were supposed to. Instead we reciprocated with a post detailing some of our favorite blogs, including the site that gave us the award....with links of course. That seemed to make the most sense to us.

    THE GUYS

Having received one award, I decided to use that meme to go backwards, to see who was giving an award to whom, and why.

It took a bit of time but was well worth the effort.. in the end I had a list of 200 great blogs, all in the areas I am interested in: history, the arts, travel, architecture, literature, parks and gardens, food, wine and music.

I don't mind getting awards - provided that it is at least vaguely pertinent to the blog's topic.

For example, one of my blogs was 'awarded' with inclusion in a 'best conservative blogs' list. I have no problem with that: I've gotten a little traffic that way. ("Conservative" will do as a label for me, but it's misleading - see catholiccitizenamerica.blogspot.com/2008/11/conservative-liberal-democrat.h... - yeah, I'm one of those people.)

    Bottom Line

I sort of like awards. They give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. But I make no effort to 'win' them. In my opinion, it's not worth the effort.

Any notoriety is welcome from the blogging community - as long as it is valid.

I'm under the impression that many who get nominated have requested from their subscribers and friends to nominate them.

I'm not sure if it has much value to the run-of-the-mill blog reader.

    Nor does Alexa Rank.
    1. Norski
"Any notoriety..." reminds me of the old 'print anything you want about me, but spell my name right.'

There's something to the old saw, 'any publicity is good publicity.' I don't completely agree with that, of course.

And, as the last part of your first sentence seems to indicate, apparently neither do you.

Thanks, BTW, for mentioning Alexa. That was a trip down memory lane for me.

I think they are great and a way for some bloggers to network and get to know each other.
    1. Norski
      Good points.

I can see where blogger-to-blogger link awards could get spammy, if they went along with 'send to ten of your friends' requests - or requirements.

But 'cool blog' awards with no strings attached? Good networking tool, I'd say. Thanks for the idea, BTW.
