Even though I have been a member of blogcatalog for a month or two it is only in the past two or three days that I have started to focus on this website. As anyone got any tips or advice on how best to approach using this site?

I think you're doing it. It's all about social interaction with other members. Visit their sites, leave thoughtful and insightful comments, and genuinely be interested in them. They will return the favor and be genuinely interested in you.

It's a great idea to post on the forums because as people get to know you, they often want to check out your blog.

I also like the 'broadcast' feature--and use it when I post a new entry on my blog.

Some of the groups can be beneficial as well.

    Good luck--and welcome.

Thank you all for your instant advice. @mtyler77 where do you find the broadcast feature as I post at least one blog daily on my own blog and I always announce it @rocketrobin2 on twitter as well as @friendfeed but didn't realize that you could announce it here @ blogcatalog also.

      Many thanks

Click on your dashboard. Then you will see a tab that says, Broadcasts--click on that. To the right hand side of the screen is a text lin says, "Post a New Broadcast" (or "create a new broadcast).

I also Twitter and Facebook my new entries.

I used to facebook mine but it seemed to offend some family and friends so I have stopped directly posting onto there, although through the backdoor ie friendfeed my post still in smaller print go out on facebook.

imho, BC is most useful for making some friends in the blogging community. Friends can be Extremely helpful in your blogging endeavors in all sorts of ways. But (and again imho) you really need to focus first on the relationships and let the benefits flow from them, rather than focusing on the benefits first which doesn't work nearly as well.

If you have a few minutes every day, join a few discussions or post new ones; don't forget to link your BC account to your social networking profiles, add your favorite members as friends, follow bloggers in your niche so you can see what they are up to on other sites (I use this to check their stumbles or see if they published any new blog posts I might be interested in reading).

There is really a lot you can do with Blog Catalog, this is one of my favorite sites!
