Backlinks play a very big role in Google's pagerank algorithm. Also update your blog regularely.

I not sure what the best way is, however i have herd that if you post messages on "Blogging Directory" site there is a small chance that people may click on your user name. Find out what Blog you have submitted to that directory and maybe visit your site..

PrettyLady - what is it you mean by backlinks? I think I have tried to use them on blogger before, but they never seem to work for me. Any advice or ideas?

Backlinks are links in your posts to another blogs/websites that are related to whatever your writing in your post.

Join paid post programs such as Pay Per Post...they automatically provide lotsa backlinks once you're accepted into the program. And in case you had a writer block this programs helps you to keep on blogging (in addition you'll earn money).

Make friends with other bloggers and your readers. Comment on those blogs regularly and respond to comments on your blog. Submit your good posts to reddit, digg, de.licio.us, etc. and get traffic/readers. Post to forums and leave a link to your blog in the tagline. Post regularly to your blog. Wait six months after doing this faithfully and you will be ranked.

It seems to me you are referring to the blogrank inside Blogcatalog

I am not sure of all the factors but most of these probably help

    1. Interacting with other Blogcatalog members
    2. Clickthroughs to your blog
    3. Ratings in the review section
    4. Ratings with the voting widget
    5. Using the widgets supplied by Blog catalog
    6. Possibly traffic on your blog, detected by blogcatalog with pageloads
    7. Possibly the amount of traffic from your blog back to Blogcatalog (new members etc)

If you are talking about thing like search ranking and pagerank, it is again about traffic, subscribers, and above all links from relevant blogs and other websites.
Links which are not relevant are almost meaningless

All I do is blog and link out to good stuff. It seems like the simplest way- more content, more results, more readers. I am, by no means, a know it all but, that is what I have been doing since last July. I have met and visited a ton and I love it. The possibilities are endless. Honestly, though, they are just numbers, all of them, don't get caught up with them.

    Yo, Forrest, tell 'em,
"That's all I have to say about that"
