The first step in making money with affiliate marketing is to create a narrowly focused content
rich web site that attracts warm, interested browsers. Once the reader gets acquainted with who
you are and learns to trust you and your message, then, you subtly nudge them towards the
merchant, you don't sell, you
presell.' This works because of the trust you build between your visitor and yourself.

I think affiliate marketing is tough, but then look at Amazon. That having been said i would think it's not just about trust, but about choosing quality affiliations.

Right now it's hard to be an affiliate at the same time its the best time. Lots of changes are happing we are moving form website to blogs to all type of rich media. Social media is very important hot topics in discussion boards can create a link to you on the fist page of Google some call this conversation domination.

I got a video email one day from a guy who claims he could get his links to the front of Google 50 time through the first few pages. The video showed that if you talk about hot topics you don't need to use ppc. Now he had my attention. I was talking about the Ecomxpo a lot on my blogs and this network. So I looked on Google to find my links 4 times on the first pages it does work if you need proof look on Google for ecomexpo ecomxpo you will find referral school be unemployable blogcatalog all link on that page about a week ago there were hundreds thousands of links a pages you will also find me in blog world expo on Google.

The whole affiliate thing is changing.

Nope. Thats pretty much exactly how you DONT make money in affiliate marketing, and one of the biggest mistakes people make. The job of the affiliate is NOT to sell or build a relationship. We vendors spend tens of thousands on ad copy so affiliates dont have to, and in fact most affiliates scare away sales by doing exactly what you refer to.

As a top affiliate at ClickBank, and the developer of the number one ClickBank revenue model, I can tell you the job of a successful affiliate is to only deliver a personal RECOMMENDATION of any given product or service, and then refer the visitor to the PROFESSIONALLY written vendor`s copy for the close. Any half decent vendor will have a built in encoded subscription system, because only a tiny fraction of visitors will buy from the site. Over 88% of our sales come from after the 5th sales email sent out, all encoded with the original affiliate ID.

An affiliate should never try to develop a sale, or a relationship for the purpose of the sale. Only about 5 percent of affiliates know how to be very good affiliates, and this is one of the biggest mistakes affiliates make when they start.

Stick to personal recommendation (a single paragraph) and then send them through your referral link to the vendor. No more. No less.

PS: Amazon is just about the worst affiliate program for new affiliates, as they do nothing to convert sales after the referral. Sasme goes for the CJ (Commission Junction) system. Not good for newbies, great for corporate style sites.

PPS: PPC is financial suicide for new affiliates, nowhere near as good as sound organic SEO, which is free anyway.

I'll agree with you using PPC advertising to generate affiliate sales is difficult. We just did our numbers for Feburary (webdiggin.com/130/cashflow-feb2008/). To date, we've made $1064 in commissions (mostly from CJ), but we've spent $1327 in advertising on Google and Yahoo, so you're right - we are in the hole.

I checked out your two sites and then hopped away. I got to be honest with you - there's a certain genre of money making sites with great endorsements and big fonts that make me nervous.

Sound organic SEO. Sounds ground. Is that where most of your traffic for these two sites come from?

yeah google adwords or ppc is financial drain for those who don't know what they are doing. At the end of the days, Google rewards those who's got the most relevant results on their ads. and landing pages : )
