How do you promote your blog posts?

I am just curious what some of you do to promote a post after it has been written? Do you Stumble or Digg your own posts? Do you send out a broadcast about your post?

A lot of folks on here have said broadcasts 1.) don't typically work to get clickthrus, and from the user's side 2.) are sort of viewed as being spammy. So if you're thinking of doing broadcasts, you might want to make sure you have a really choice post to announce.
On my older blog, I'm to a point where I don't have to do too much; it has it's audience.
On my new blog, I've done some Stumbling and Digging to get it started, and friends have kindly helped me out with that, too (much appreciated, guys!).
In terms of getting general awareness, I belong to some niche forums where I can put my blog addresses in the signature. (That works quite well-- people like what you have to say and check you out.)
It doesn't happen all at once, too. So keep that in mind and hang in there when things seem slow.

Best advice I can give: Don't worry about popularity, that's more of high-school drama mentality stuff. Just write for the sake of it, people who find you will be more appreciative if they didn't just read an advertisement or a spam of it.
I've posted maybe two discussion topics which linked to my blog, only because they fully qualified as discussion topics.
Worst thing you can do is ask how to make money by blogging, that's a sure-fire way to discouragement and most people who worry about that end of moving on and giving up, which is for the best =) -
I advertise the URL in the local paper, on the back of doors at public bathrooms, on business cards, crop circles, graffiti, just a few.

@riverstyxxx
Don’t try the crop circles those old time farmers go by the old laws and don’t hesitate pulling out shotguns and rifles.
I’m still trying to develop a quality blog worth promoting. When I get there I am just going to pay the top bloggers in the industry to promote me and I’ll send a press release to industry publications.
The right person recommending you is always worth going after.

I use Digg, Propeller, and StumbleUpon, and recently broadcasts. Diggs are very iffy for me, Propeller is decent, and stumbleupon is very nice.
As far as being annoying, I think as long as your content is quality people won't mind daily broadcasts, diggs, etc.
That is unless you try and use the old newsgroups to promote your stuff. Over there they consider anyone posting anything a troll. A shame too, because that used to be a great place to promote a website. -
I don't do it anymore, as I am content with my current traffic (Mostly outside of BC). I enjoy giving personal responses...mostly to long established friends and family, as well as the interaction with the few regular BC friends with whom I have become close. However, traffic has been picking up considerably and handling it on a day by day basis is getting tricky. We'll see how it goes...

Agree broadcasts tend to come from same people and I soon just ignore them. I've broadcast a couple of times on something that is more like an alert or general info that can be used by anyone.
Commenting on other blogs is always a good way to promote recent posts. I've also sent shout-outs to people who seem like they could use the information in one of my posts.
For my last post where I tried a "new" method of interviewing a blogger, I really wanted to publicize, so I opened a discussion to get some input from BC members--- got only one response. It's tough out there! -
Post to Gather, VOX...Propeller's audience is a bit smaller...
If applicable, submit to news/fun aggregate sites like FARK, Gorilla Mask, Ebaum's World...
Find link dump sites and submit there...
Use Google adwords to properly title your post so that audience is maximized...
Make comments on lots of posts...do lots of reading...
Find people with whom you can exchange links... -
Put the blog in directories of blogs, but a lot of time is about spontaneity of the people who come by google.

I would love to promote my blogs further, but not sure what Diggs, Stumble and Broadcast are. I'm fairly new to this discussion so please tell me how I can promote my blogs. Thanks so much.

You can have the best content in the world but you have not used basic SEO then how will it be found by potential readers using search engines?
Basic SEO elements for bloggers
onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2009/08/04/basic-seo-elements-for-bloggers/
In blogging content is king and marketing is queen. If you write high quality original content, optimize it, and then promote it throughout social networks and on twitter and friendfeed, then the result may be an increase in organic traffic, or not. If it’s not easy to locate your content in search engines then there will be no increase in new traffic. Thus, what determines success is two things:
* whether or not your content is found, and
* whether or not the readers who do find it become subscribers.

WOW! I see that there are many inappropriate link drops in this resurrected thread from last year so I wouldn't be surprised if the entire thread is deleted.

Excellent advise from timethief, on how to use Digg and Stumble Upon effectively.
I also use feedshark.brainbliss.com to promote my blog.
It took me a while to realise it, but having good or even great content is not enough - you have to try and engage with other bloggers by commenting on their posts etc. -
A good non-spammy way to broadcast is StumbleUpon. You'll get a lag between the time you submit and when you get loads of traffic, usually in spikes.
Digg really isn't a good place to go. People there prefer reading about things happening, and a self-made PR about your blog doesn't fall under their idea of "things happening". They're pretty drive-by and drop news articles quickly, no matter how nice they are. For instance it is not unusual there for an article to get over 3000 diggs one day and less than 50 the next.
However, it could be different if you are promoting a post about a specific topic/event. -
I usually just try to promote my blog, but if I have a friend that would enjoy a particular blogpost, or I kind of want an opinion from, I will send them a shout about it. Just don't send it to anybody though, send it to people you particularly know would enjoy it and don't do it all the time. You don't want to be the boy who cried "Wolf."
