We had a spammer send out about 800 shoutbox messages last night. He was removed along with his shouts, this is probably why you are not seeing the shout.

It looks like a regular shout in your shoutbox, but the word private is bold or in red.

1) Goto: http://www.blogcatalog.com/user/(your username)
Or simply click on your username..
2) On the middle right side of your sidebar, see "My Shoutbox". That's the PM here..

I got an email saying I have a new private message but I can't see any link to private messages. Does anyone know how to access them?
