I have heard a lot around the blogosphere about Twitter. I joined the site several months ago but still don't understand how it can help my blog. Whenever I visit Twitter I am limited to what I can do. Any suggestions?

Just keep posting a link to your blog every hour of every day. Sooner or later somebody will click on it.
  2. cltalbert
Every hour! I'm sorry I'm not sitting at my computer 24 hours a day. And I refuse to set my alarm clock. I think that is a little extreme.

I believe he's kidding but you could easily set up a greasemonkey script on firefox to do the posting automatically. Then you would only have to leave your computer online 24 hours a day and it would just keep posting, but I don't believe it would do you much good.

The solution is to get twitterfeed :-D

Search twitter and connect with people with similar interests - then tweet (i do usually once a day as i find when i'm looking to follow someone - if they've not recent post history beyond a week, i don't bother) about your posts, what you're doing etc and you'll slowly pick up a few visitors / followers.

    WTF is twitter?
    1. timethief
Twitter is a "chat" service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
    2. barryfromtexas
      I know - I was just tryin to be a pain:P

I'd caution against using Twitter as a blog promotion tool only.

I think the best way to approach Twitter is to be an interesting person and chat with your followers and ppl you're following, to post cool links that are NOT your blog, and then when you update, post about it. In other words, don't talk about your blog all the time.

I joined and checked on both the group and one cool site, but can't seem to find recommendations for twitter on the desktop???

    Tweetbacks for Wordpress
This plugin imports those tweets about your posts as comments. You can display them in between the other comments on your blog, or display them separately.

  23. SomeMuslimMan
You can simply tweet on your twitter that you post a post about something and place a link for your post.

I've had a good few clicks via twitter, I guess it depends what you're saying. If it's news worthy and you're ahead of the news people want to read your writing.

I do chat with people too though, and it's nice.
  25. mpbabaji
Do you think anyone is going to click on a link posted on Twitter ??
    1. JamCan
I do sometimes if the catch line is good enough.
  26. moely
    i have no comment.
  27. bettieblogger
how can you use it? well, the idea is to advertise your blog, let people know when you've madea layout change, new posts etc .. I toss something on there about once a week to let my followers know.
  28. codesucker
This is an old thread, but I'm sure people still have this question.

crpitt suggested that you use twitter to find tweeple in your niche.. if you blog about SEO then do a twitter search for #SEO and get in the conversation.

certainly don't post a link to your blog every hour. That's a good way to lose followers - you should only 'promote' your own means every 1 in 10 tweets - the other 9 have to be extremely useful links - saying you finished lunch doesn't count.
  29. diTesco
There are several ways to promote your blog or just about anything else on Twitter. If you are not taking advantage of it's power, then you are missing the "band wagon". I can not put them all here, but you can read a lot about improving your experience with Twitter on twittnotes.com BTW, you can follow me here @DiTesco twitter.com/DiTesco/
  30. squirli
Hmm interesting, I joined twitter but I haven't had time to have a proper look yet. At first glance the 'follow' someone I thought looked a bit stalkerish lol

It sounds useful, thanks for the links I'm going to check out the twitter group and get twittering
  31. ckent27
Did you see the recent report that Twitter might not be as "active" as everyone is thinking?

40% of the 7 million Twitter users do not make posts after their first day.

2/3 of Twitter users follow FEWER than ten people.

    25% do not following anyone.

I wonder if Twitter will last?
    1. JonnyDunMind
      Where is this resport?
I'm curious to see if the 2/3rds was out of the 60% that keep posting.
  32. JamCan
I twit every day......and I definitely twit my latest blog posts.
  33. cltalbert
Thank you for all your wonderful tips and input! I've used some of them and now I'm getting a hang of this whole twitter thing. Thanks!
  34. Alcomum
Every time I post on my blog, I do a tweet about it. Putting the link on twitter seems to encourage people to click on it. I also use Twitter to automatically update my Facebook page, so my tweets and links go straight to update my Facebook status as well.
    1. cltalbert
@Alcomum that is pretty cool. I wish my blog posts would automatically do that. I tweet them every day and since I have a team of bloggers sometimes we have five or six new articles up in one day.
