Hey. I wasn't able to post a comment directly on the blog for some reason.
You have some really nice points in there though. I think its a great article for parents to read for sure. Too many parents squash their kids self esteem at a young age.
My latest save the world campaign is this.

When I was younger and stronger I did a lot: ran a welfare advocacy clinic, did community outreach in homeless shelters, when I was practicing law donated more than 1/3 of my time to victims of domestic violence, wrote free community education materials to help people get public benefits, fight eviction, etc...even took people into my home if I couldn't find any other options for them.
Now that I'm a single parent with a full-time job and medical problems, I've had to scale back considerably. My primary mission at the moment is making sure that every kid in our area who isn't getting the support she needs at home knows she has a safe place to come any time with problems, for help with homework, to call for a ride, or just to sit down and have a family dinner. -
I volunteered at a secondhand store that taught tutoring and life skills to kids, I volunteered at the "Headstart" program my mom works at, I became a Sunday School teacher at the age of 16 due to how I view things, this did not work out for me far too opinionated. I had a paying job by the time I was 14. I again, worked in a classroom setting helping out a teacher. I worked through a program called City Year and I loved every minute of it. City Year gave me the opportunity to not just meet new people but to experience things that I think are phenomenal. It allowed me to work with children that have developmental disabilities this is when I realized they don't have disabilities they have "learn different." I worked with The Cleveland Museum of Art to teach art to people with mental retardation. I worked with the Cleveland Public Theatre to teach theatre and dance to high school students. I worked with the Cleveland Cavaliers promotional team to create a public service announcement. I could go on and on about my resume but none of it makes a difference. What does make a difference is what it meant to those I served.

I work with mentally and physically disabled children and adults. (foster parent and other volunteer programs) I have been a volunteer for soup kitchens forever.
I offer rides to people who need medical services in our nearest city (which is a 200 mile round trip) to help them out, and I work with women who are in crisis.. when I can.
There is so much that can be done, this is just a drop in the bucket for what help is needed. But at least I try to help whenever I can.
I actually enjoy helping someone out.. It makes me feel good that I can make a difference even if it's small in someones life. -

Love this! Made my day reading these things... so I share that others may also say hey I can do that too...
At 66, disabled and impoverished it would be easy to make excuses for all I don't do...
But actually I do a lot more than it seems... and nothing that can't be done by anyone.
First and of most importance to me is spending a couple hours every day with two local abused, neglected and "special" kids who live nearby. They thrive on the time, attention, a little fresh juice and some healthy snack...and a bit of a sanctuary in a life that offers them mostly hell on earth. And if you haven't let a kid in your life that needs you more than you can ever imagine, let me tell you that nothing you do in life will bring you more satisfaction...and maybe make more difference than you will ever even know about.
There are other children in my life for whom I know I fill needs they can't get filled elsewhere.
My 89 Beretta continues to run so I try to take those without transportation where needed when possible.
I was a CASA (a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children) but had to stop for financial reasons. Recommended to the organization that they have a "slush" fund of some sort for those who otherwise are qualified and want to volunteer for this difficult work but can't manage the cost of gas now. I suspect there are more volunteer positions that are closed to people for similar simple reasons.
For those too busy working and tied up with family, maybe a donation for gas to an organization like that for that purpose would be a wonderful thing to do... even if you don't get to write it off for reasons that escape me...
And, last but not least, I do as many simple, random acts of kindness as I see the way for... amazing how many times it is possible in our daily lives to change a life just by smiling.
Oh and in April I devote more time, energy and money than I probably have to doing "stuff" related to child abuse. April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness month... this year I have been busy making blue ribbons things to give out locally... pins, bracelets, twist ons, etc. and I include as many kids as interested in making and giving out these things. And i think April also includes Grandmothers Standing day... but maybe that is May ? senior moment : )... but it is another one of those things that anyone can be a part of... 5 minutes once a year to stand for PEACE...
So how wonderful to have this discussion so we can all encourage each other and share ideas! Thank You!
